FORBES OF
KINGENNIE
(Broughty Ferry) With temperatures still on the cold side and some
brisk winds it has been a challenging week for anglers. Despite this
there have been some fine returns. On the Boathouse
Pool the
honours were shared between Messrs. Dykes and Cameron who returned 13
fish each. Mr. Suttie also enjoyed an excellent day’s sport
releasing 12. Buzzers, Diawl Bachs and various dry fly patterns
accounted for most of the fish. The Burnside
Pool again
produced some fine fish. Scott Watson returned four fish in a short
evening session with the best being a magnificent Rainbow estimated
at 17lbs. Steven Green certainly found the correct method releasing
18 fish with the best being a superb Rainbow of 15lbs 3ozs, George
Birse returned 11 fish on dries, which included a nice Rainbow of
8lbs 8oz and Peter Thomson and Tam Costello also did well on dries
with the latter returning a fine Rainbow of 10lbs 8oz. Simion took
three fish for a combined weight of 18lbs 12oz - best fish 14lbs.
Location was the most important aspect of the catches as successful
flies ranged from Dries through Buzzers to small lures. Buzzer
fishing accounted for most of the catches on the Bankside
Pool,
although dry fly patterns also did well. Mr. Bruce released 18 fish;
Jock Leslie returned 14 fish whilst Terry Hogg and Jake Gilchrist
released a dozen each. Powerbait fished beneath a float again
accounted for most of the fish on the Woodside
Pool (any
legal method). On Tuesday 17 fish were taken for a total of 32lbs
4oz; on Thursday three anglers had 13 fish for 33lbs and on Saturday
22 fish were taken for 44lbs. Several of the bigger fish were caught
on spinners.
This
past week of hot weather here at Forbes of Kingennie is seeing a
change in the fishes behaviour, as the water temperatures rise they
have been a bit fussy at times but when the cloud comes over and
cools down the sport at times has been outstanding. Different ponds
have been fishing better at different times so moving around has been
essential for constant results.
The
Bankside pool has been the stand out pond these last few days with
lots of anglers having great returns in sometimes trick conditions.
The water has become very clear recently and really helped with the
returns. Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the
bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at 5 feet. The
washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher
in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when
they have been very active. Mr Kirk had 12 fish and 13 fish in 2
consecutive trips on fabs, buzzers and diawls bachs. His best fish
was estimated at around 12lb as well as others of 5 and 7lb. Mr Jones
had 12 on black buzzers under and indicator. Mr Birse had 13 on a
sugar cube shipman’s.
The
Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible
on the surface cruising around. The fishing has been a little bit
slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. Again the more
natural approach has taken more fish, The washing line with wee
buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right
conditions when they come up. Mr Westland had 21 on size 14 black
buzzers and fabs. Mr Wilson had 2 for 6lb and put back 9 fishing
diawl bachs.
The
Boathouse has been a bit coloured but on the very sunny days it has
been the best pond with huge amounts of fish taking off the surface
in the shade. Mr Leslie had a great day returning around 20 fish on
small dries and emerges. Mr Fulthorpe had a good morning landing 8 up
to 7lb on a pink fab and diawl bachs. Mr Whiteford kept his 3 fish
for 8lb and put back 6 on a damsel.
The
Woodside pool has been really busy in the nice weather with many full
bags being recorded. Green powerbait and spinners have been the top
bait of late. Over the weekend there was a total of 37 anglers landed
68 fish for weight of 115lb.
4.
MARKLE
(East Lothian) David Miller from Athelstaneford had 5 on Dries, John
Thomson (East Lintion) 4 on Buzzers, Kenny Morrison (Edinburgh) 5 on

10lbs 8oz- best 8lbs. Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 10 on lures and
The Happy Fishers from Romano Bridge had 12 fish for 27lbs.
5.
SWANSWATER
(Stirling)
The weather remained cool for
most of the week with the weekend feeling very chilly for the time of
year. The fish were mostly around 3 feet deep and well spread out
although at times they were slightly nearer the surface. A great
variety of top quality trout were landed including many blues, golds,
tigers and browns as well as the more numerous rainbows. Many
anglers remark on the fin perfect appearance of the fish and on the
superb fight they put up. The most successful fly patterns this week
included Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Ally McCoist, Damsel, Viva, PTN,
Bibio, Snatcher, Hopper and Buzzer while on the bait pond Maggots and
Orange or Rainbow Power Bait were the best things to use.

well with his Maggot fly taking 4 for 12lbs 2oz but on Sunday there

the fishery with the place literally bubbling with fish. Grant
McCauley went onto small size 20 Black Gnats and hammered fish all
