3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather conditions have again played an important part in the fishing returns with the best catches being in warm, overcast spells. On Saturday the Troutmasters 2018 Badge Winners Fish-Off was held on the Boathouse Pool. Jake Gilchrist had already qualified for the Junior Final and Callum Cochrane won the Senior Fish-Off with four fish for a total of 10lbs 0ozs. Congratulations to both and good luck for the finals! Also during the week on the Boathouse Pool Robert Gibson read the situation well to return 12 fish including a nice rainbow estimated at 6lbs. Mr. Ball, staying as a guest at one of the lodges, released four fish with the best being a superb rainbow of 11lbs 4oz. Buzzers and various dry fly patterns were the most successful options. Grant Burnett enjoyed an excellent day on the Burnside Pool, returning 18 fish and George Birse was close behind with 15 fish. Tam Costello released 8 which included another fine rainbow estimated at 11lbs, Mr. Brown took three fish weighing 9lbs 8oz and Mr. McCabe had a similar result. Buzzers and small dry fly patterns like the Yellow Owl and Shipman’s produced the best returns. The Bankside Pool has been more of a challenge this week with the water being gin clear again. However, some decent catches have still been recorded. Jock Leslie and Scott Watson released 11 fish each whilst Terry Hogg returned 9. Powerbait fished beneath a float again proved the best method on the Woodside Pool (any legal method), with spinning also producing some decent fish. On Wednesday seven anglers caught 23 fish for a combined weight of 47lbs.
This past week of hot weather here at Forbes of Kingennie is seeing a change in the fishes behaviour, as the water temperatures rise they have been a bit fussy at times but when the cloud comes over and cools down the sport at times has been outstanding. Different ponds have been fishing better at different times so moving around has been essential for constant results.
The Bankside pool has been the stand out pond these last few days with lots of anglers having great returns in sometimes trick conditions. The water has become very clear recently and really helped with the returns. Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at 5 feet. The washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when they have been very active. Mr Kirk had 12 fish and 13 fish in 2 consecutive trips on fabs, buzzers and diawls bachs. His best fish was estimated at around 12lb as well as others of 5 and 7lb. Mr Jones had 12 on black buzzers under and indicator. Mr Birse had 13 on a sugar cube shipman’s.
The Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible on the surface cruising around. The fishing has been a little bit slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. Again the more natural approach has taken more fish, The washing line with wee buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right conditions when they come up. Mr Westland had 21 on size 14 black buzzers and fabs. Mr Wilson had 2 for 6lb and put back 9 fishing diawl bachs.
The Boathouse has been a bit coloured but on the very sunny days it has been the best pond with huge amounts of fish taking off the surface in the shade. Mr Leslie had a great day returning around 20 fish on small dries and emerges. Mr Fulthorpe had a good morning landing 8 up to 7lb on a pink fab and diawl bachs. Mr Whiteford kept his 3 fish for 8lb and put back 6 on a damsel.
The Woodside pool has been really busy in the nice weather with many full bags being recorded. Green powerbait and spinners have been the top bait of late. Over the weekend there was a total of 37 anglers landed 68 fish for weight of 115lb.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) There were some excellent catch and release returns last week with Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh using small lures to chalk up 11, David Miller (Athelstaneford) 8 on Dries John Daly (Edinburgh) 7 on a White Rabbit, Alan Limardi (Edinburgh) 6 on a Damsel and Kenny Morrison from Edinburgh used Dries to catch 6. Joe Beattie from Edinburgh had 6 on Buzzers, Keir Bailie (Ballancrieff) 5 on Buzzers, M Wood (Musselburgh) 4 on Dries, B Martin (Dunbar) 4 on Dries and R Kane from Edinburgh had 3 on a Foam Daddy.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week started warm, became beautifully hot and sunny midweek before a cool easterly breeze set up and cooled things down again by the weekend. Water temperature rose gradually as the week progressed starting at 10oC and ending up at 13.5oC. Early on the fish were being caught 2 to 3 feet down and were mostly to be found around the boat jetty and the island. Midweek when the sun was at its brightest they were down about 5 feet and sheltering off the dam and the island. On Thursday a large number of fish were seen moving and feeding on the surface especially around the big tree. By the weekend they were just below the surface and taking mainly wet flies. A selection of lures, Cat’s Whisker, Ally McCoist, Dancer, Damsel, fished deep were successful with Buzzer, Cormorant and Snatcher also taking fish. Kate McLaren was the most popular wet fly. On the bait pond anglers were having a lot of success with Orange, Green or Yellow Power Bait, Worms and Maggots. A selection of Blue, Gold, Tiger and Brown trout figure in the catch returns along with the Rainbows. All varieties are in excellent condition and are being stocked in all three ponds. Many anglers are remarking on what a great fight they are getting from the fish. Fishery opening hours are currently Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8.00am to 6.00pm. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 8.00am to 9.00pm

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) Lots of fine hefty specimens showing in the baskets and at the present time small black patterns like the CDC’s and Black Foam Beetles are bringing good sport but during the quieter spells the usual small lures are also working. John Shaw from Kilsyth had a bumper bag of 17 c/r using size 16 black CDC’s with the best fish tipping the scales at 8lbs. Fish of the week went to Alan Meek from Cambuslang with a cracker of 17lbs included in a basket of 3 c/r, Stuart Sutherland (Kirkintilloch) 8 c/r – best 10lbs, Mr. Robertson (Glasgow) 6 c/r – best 12lbs, Mr. Young (Ibrox) 18 c/r – best 11lbs 8oz and Robert McIntyre had 4 c/r – biggest 8lbs.
