Lake of Menteith fishing report

Lake of Menteith 5th
6ft Water Temperature 14.5C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 1.6m.
6ft temperature has reduced significantly in the last week and this morning one of
the best hatches of mayfly was taking place across the lake. With the cooler water
temperatures, the trout were in abundance in the surface layers – making the most
of the feast on offer. Despite the long period of stable weather we still have not
achieved the usual associated superb water clarity. It is unusual for us to have a hot
spell so early and perhaps the cooler nights are causing a degree of mixing in the
water column? The fish appear to be spread all over the Lake these days, and other
natural quarry apart from the mayfly, are pinhead fry and damsels. The preferred
angling tactic appears to still be the static buzzer – allowing the flies to hang vertical.
The duller weather forecast may see a return to washing line tactics.
June
A belated well done to Jim
Mackie of Balbeggie AC,
who caught this cracking
pike at the end of April. Jim
is pictured imagining the fish
is a rainbow.
In the SANACC heat on 31/
05/12, Grant Sutherland (left)
of RASC was top rod with
10 fish, 2nd with 10 fish Scott
Miller (on right) and third
buzzer ace Peter Batchelor
(middle) with 9 fish. Grant
had his fish on buzzers with a
floating line at Tod Hole,
Scott was using nymphs on a
floating line –held up by a
booby. Peter was on Buzzers
in Hotel Bay, and dries in the
Butts.
In the Scottish Club Championships, sponsored by GROUSE Whisky and
ANGLING ACTIVE, 54 anglers caught 132 fish. 70 were weighed in for 152lbs and
62 were returned. Top team were Kinross AC (Michael Wilson, John Reid and Alan
Smith – pictured below 3rd to 5th from left) with 20 fish, 2nd were Lochinch with 14

In the Fourth
Heat of the
BAYNES TACKLE (Callander) Menteith Boat League, Bill Ramage and Wattie
Archibald deployed cats whiskers on floating lines in the vicinity of Tod Hole. Both
netted 10 fish. The 18 anglers had a good night catching 82 fish - with no blanks. Bill
got his first fish first so he collects the £25 Bayne's tackle voucher and the Taste of
the Trossachs Breakfast voucher. Mark Steven’s currently is current league leader
with James Fairlie and Ronnie Robb in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Please remember to
take a catch card next week….
Please where possible can you use/
recycle your own clean plastic bags
to keep your fish in – as oor bag bill
is getting large.
