Fishing report on the Lake of Menteith

The top tactic changed during the week, away from the static buzzer and onto a mixture of lures, dries and buzzers. Areas producing have been Malling Shore, Heronry, Portend Burn Mouth and cages, Lochend, Butts, Roadshore, Hotel Bay, Reedy Point and out in the middle of both basins. In other words just about anywhere.
The catches in April have been the best since records began, with increased catch and release leading to greatly improved catches. Increased catch and release appears also to have improved rises and there is a tendency for the fish to gravitate off whatever is the successful method? ………The average catch per 2 man 8hr boat was 10.1 fish in April and 5.6 fish in May. This nice looking blue was caught by Paul Garner from Denny.
Bats – the midges seem particularly bad this year but luckily we have bats to help control the numbers. A recent survey at the club house, prior to our extension work being approved, identified a small colony of bats in the southern gable end. The bat ecologist John Haddow reckons it is possibly a small colony of males. These are wonderful creatures so we will take care not to disturb their roost. John advised anglers that, if they are unlucky enough to catch a bat, they should ensure they are not bitten (i.e. wear thick gloves), as it is the bat species that collects chironomids etc above water (Daubenton’s Bat) that is the only species known to have tested positive for Rabies in the UK.

On arrival the anglers were greeted with near perfect conditions! A westerly breeze, which lately would be considered balmy, 16 degrees and a wind around 8-9mph with perfect 100% cloud cover! The majority of the boats headed west to Malling, cages and silage pit areas, with a few going to Lochend and International bay, and indeed the fish were on the feed! A lot of anglers reported getting the majority of their catch on their first drift or two - however conditions were to change. The wind started to swing out of the North and this soon heralded a quite dramatic 20min downpour! As soon as this subsided most of the Lake was alive with action, and deciding which fish to cover was the biggest problem. We then had an Easterly wind until the end, which dropped the temperature a fair bit. Top team on the night were the defending champions; Balfron Piscatorials with 19 fsih (l to r; Gordon Hayward (1 fish), James Fairley (8 fish) and Bob Robertson (10 fish)). Technically it is a three man team and their success was down to catching fish all through the evening when others seemed to struggle. Winning tactics were varied, Boobys, buzzers, and dries, Bob had fish on 6 different flies (or so he told me). Most of their fish were caught in the West basin! 2nd were Kinross ‘B’ which included 3 generations; Willie Wilson, Paul Wilson and Grandson Conner Campbell. 3rd were Lothian and Border’s Police. The heaviest fish, a lovely resident of 4lb, was caught by Brian Fraser. 5 anglers progress to the Champion of Champion Final, Bob Robertson, James Fairley, Connor Campbell, Robin Brown and Rae Harrison. In all 16 teams (48 anglers) netted 125 fish for 274lbs, 54 of these were returned. Sounds like Clubs Officionado Kenny Millar had a good night trying to balance the boats. When finally everybody disappeared (astonishingly in neat pairs) Kenny went out and landed 7 fish on dries in half an hour.
Singles and Pairs Open competition 2nd July.
There are still places available for the evening heat of the SANA Open singles and pairs competition on Monday 2nd July. Entry fee including fishing cost is £30. Entry forms are available from the office or can be downloaded at www.sana.org.uk. This is an open competition and will be fished on a catch and release basis. In the Fifth Heat of the BAYNES TACKLE (Callander) Menteith Boat League. Brian MacKenzie had a stunning night with 17 fish - 8 ahead of his nearest rival. Brian got his out in the east basin(?) on a white cat. He caught 8 in the first hour then picked them up throughout the evening. The 23 anglers caught and returned 96 fish. Brian collects the £25 Bayne's tackle voucher and the Taste of the Trossachs (Callander) Breakfast or meal voucher.
