The best fishing area has been the south shore where the Sedge Muddler, Sedgehogs, Kate Maclaren, Hot Head Damsels Blobs and Fabs have all produced good baskets.
2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) This month has been disappointing with just the odd good day and a lot of rain - no chance of a late summer now!! The fish are still being a bit picky with so much natural feeding hence a wide variety of flies catching every day. Graham King from Almondbank had 2 fish for 8lbs 4oz on an Orange Lure, Kevin McIver, Clydebank, 2 fish for 8lbs on a Henrick Carson, Hector Wilson, Bannockburn, 3 fish for 9lbs 12oz on a Wotsit, B Safrill, Essex, 3 fish for 8lbs 4oz and Ian McLean from Diageo used Buzzers to take a brace weighing 7lbs.Dean Parker from Auchterarder took a couple weighing 7lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer, Bob Ross, Kilsyth, 2 fish for 7lbs on a Goldie, Jim Marshall, Stirling, 1 fish for 8lbs on a Kate McLaren, Jim Linton, 4 fish weighing 15lbs on a Gold Humungus, Allan Laing, Carluke, 4 fish for 12lbs 8oz on Buzzers and E McLelland from Lochgelly used a Bloodworm to take 1 fish for 2lbs 8oz.
3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Sunday 24 September was probably the busiest day of the year so far for fishing at the resort, with all the ponds booked in advance by various organisations. Pride of place went to those involved with the Casting for Recovery event (which teamed up fly fishing guides with ladies recovering from cancer). The weather did us proud as did all who were involved and a great day was enjoyed by all with every participant catching one fish or more.
On the Boathouse seven anglers from the Irvine Water Sports Club landed 14 fish for a total weight of 41lbs (also returning two) and the Willis group took twenty fish for 64lbs. Individual returns included Jock Leslie with 16 on catch/release; Mr. Falconer had three fish for 11lbs 8oz, Mr. McKinney took three for 10lbs 12oz and Mr. Mudie had three for 10lbs 8oz. CDCs, Sugar Cube Shipman, Buzzers, Cormorants and lures all scored well. The Burnside again performed well on dries, buzzers, nymphs and small lures. The Willis group had twenty six fish for a total of 72lbs; The Falconer group took nineteen fish for 49lbs; Jock Leslie returned 15 fish; Mr. Wales returned 12 and Tam Costello had 6 on catch/release with the best being a stunning rainbow estimated at 9lbs. On Sunday we were pleased to again host the Rosyth Civil Service Club who enjoyed a decent day on the Bankside Pool. They took nine fish for 32lbs and returned a further 62 fish. Their total included a fine rainbow of 7lbs 8oz. Other notable catches were Messrs. Watson and Westland who returned 14 fish each and Mr. Wales who returned 11 fish. The Woodside Pool (any legal method) had two days which stood out above the rest. On one day nine anglers shared twenty seven fish for 60lbs and on the other twenty two anglers took forty six fish for a total of 97lbs. Several decent fish have been landed recently including a nice rainbow, taken on a spinner by Jamie Burgess and weighed 4lbs. Powerbait beneath a float and small spinners were the preferred options.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had a couple of visits last week taking 20 on one and 8 on the other on small lures and the Russell father and son duo from Earlston had a great outing using dries to share a bag of 27 fish. Martin Williamson from Tranent had 5 on a CDC, Mark Anderson, Musselburgh, 8 on Buzzers, Kenny Morrison, Edinburgh 5 on a Nomad and Kenny Morrison from Edinburgh used a Nomad to take 5. Derek Powel from Haddington had 7 on Hoppers, Kenny Birkmyre, Dalkeith, 8 on a Popper Hopper and Paul Rae from Gala had 7 on a Suspender Minkie.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) With water temperatures continuing to drop to more ideal feeding conditions for trout, Swanswater has seen another great weeks fishing. Despite the changeable weather conditions the fish have remained in the top 2 to 3 feet of water, with a few still being tempted to the surface. As we approach the end of a successful Brown Trout season there is still a good number of Browns to be caught. Some beautiful examples have been featuring in the catch returns with more being released. Both Golds and light Blues have continued to entertain and frustrate anglers by showing an interest, chasing then turning away at the last moment on a lot of occasions. Nymphs and small lures have had most success, with Damsel, Dancer and Diawl Bach being the favourite. Daddies, Hoppers and Sedges have seen the most of the dry fly action.
Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 15lb 8oz including a 8lb Rainbow, a Blue and a Gold plus 3 returned, Gareth Mair, Glasgow, 9 for 26lb 12oz including 3 Golds, a Blue and a Brown plus 7 returned in 2 visits, Jim Potts, Inchinnan, 5 for 14lb including 2 golds, a blue and a Brown, Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 13lb 12oz including 2 Blues and Joe Potts, Inchinnan, 5 for 12lb including 4 Golds and a Brown. Davy Duncan, Grangemouth, 4 for 14lb 2oz plus 6 returned, Danny Doherty, Denny 4 for 11lb 12oz including 3 Golds and a Brown plus 3 returned, Alan Prentice, Clackmannan, 4 for 10lb 12oz including 2 Golds, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 4 for 10lb 8oz including a Blue plus 3 returned and T J Falloon, Glasgow, 4 for 10lb 8oz including 3 golds.
