Fishing report by Jim Boyd

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 06 February 2017. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 05 February 2017.

1. FRANDY (Glendevon). The fishery is now closed for the 2016 season.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It was another reasonable week of weather at Kingennie making conditions a little more pleasant for fishing in. Some strong winds have been troublesome at times and just a small amount of rain has coloured up the Boathouse just slightly. The fishing on the Boathouse has been very steady with most anglers getting in amongst the fish. Fishing various Bugs, Bloodworms and Buzzers under the bung have been top method as usual. Finding the right depth has been crucial and anything from 1 foot to 4 feet deep has seen most of the fish taken. Pulling lures has taken fish at times but they are shying up from a pulled fly after a while. Mr McLaren had a good day landing 16 fish on a mix of Buzzers and Bloodworms. Mr Robertson had 14 on the bung with the best a brownie estimated at 6-7lb. Burnside has picked up in the last week after being a bit moody, Lures have been the top method as well as Buzzers and Bloodworms. Mr Birse had a great 2 mornings with 36 fish in around 6 hours fishing, most were taken on a White and Green Lure with the biggest fish around 8lb. Mr Watson did well on a Black Bloodworm on a floating line landing 12 fish. The Bankside is still fishing well if you can find the fish on the day. They are still moving around a lot depending on the wind and angling pressure. A sinking line with lures is catching the most due to how deep they seem to be holding. Mr Barr had a good day taking 9 fish on  the Blob and Buzzers with the biggest around 8lb. Mr Duncan had 8 fish on a   Cat Bug with the best being a brownie that was estimated to be around 10lb. Mr Barlow had 11 on Black and Red Buzzers. The Woodside has not been too busy with some big fish getting caught. Mr Maxwell and his son had 4 fish for 11lb with the biggest being 6lb all caught on spinners.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Steve Rogers from Edinburgh had 4 for 11lbs 8oz on a lack Rabbit, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 4 on a Yellow Dancer, George Boag, Edinburgh, 3 on lures and Derek Demarco from Haddington took 5 on a Dancer. Ally Denholm from Hawick had 6 on Buzzers and Jocky Dyatt from Dalkeith took 5 on an Egg Fly.

4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was another very mixed week of weather with Friday being a beautiful spring day then Saturday freezing cold and snowing but surprisingly in the snow the fish were still being caught about a foot down. Jim Vann from Stirling used a Yellow Dancer to catch 3 weighing 13lbs, Shaun Craig, Stirling, 3 for 10lbs 8oz on Buzzers, Barney Eddie, Cowie, 3 for 12lbs on a Black & Gold and Jim Linton from Moodiesburn caught 4 for 12lbs on a Wotsit. Bruce Wallace from Edinburgh had 3 fish for 12lbs on an Ally, Tom Wight, Edinburgh, 3 for 12lbs on an Ally, Allan Laing, Carluke, 3 for 8lbs 12oz on a Damsel and Gerry Halas and Ian Cochrane from Stirling caught 3 for 9lbs on a Silver Invicta.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The first appreciable rain this year, which was heavy on Tuesday morning and in the form of heavy showers on Thursday, coloured the water slightly but it cleared quickly and conditions were good by the weekend.   The fish were at variable depths; sometimes in the top 2 feet, at other times down about 3 to 4 feet.   The Island and the Channel were the most productive areas with fish also to be found around the Dam in the mornings.   Most were taking small lures including Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Humungus, and Ace of Spades.   Buzzer, Cormorant, Damsel and Bloodworm were also taking fish.   Black and Green was the best colour combination.   The biggest fish landed this week was a lovely 9lb 4oz Rainbow.   Plenty more big fish are waiting to be caught and several anglers reported losing what they suspected were large specimens.   Others were frustrated by getting pulls and soft takes which didn’t translate into catches.
Gregor McGregor, Falkirk, 9lb 4oz Rainbow, Ian Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 for 16lb including a Blue, plus 1 C&R, Alistair Lyon, Edinburgh, 5 for 10lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond, plus 7 C&R, Colin Smurden, Falkirk, 4 for 13lb 8oz including 6lb 4oz Rainbow, plus 1 C&R and Nigel Muckle, West Calder, 4 for 11lb including a Gold, plus 2 C&R.
