ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 08 August 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 07 August 2016.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) It was a relatively quiet week mainly due to the holidays but those fishing did well with John Dunbar from Tillicoultry keeping 4 fish weighing 7lb 12oz, Tom Melville, Blairgowrie, 4 for 8lbs and Stuart Ferrier from Alyth retained 3 for 10lb.
On the angling club front Perthshire F/C kept 10 fish weighing 20lb 8oz, Midlothian A/C 18 fish for 34lb, Dundee West End A/C 31 fish weighing 46lb 4oz and the Western A/C took 5 fish for 10lb and released a further 13. Falkirk Municipal A/C kept 25 fish weighing 46lb 11oz and the Gartcosh A/C had 44 fish for 90lb 14oz.
The top taking flies included the Bibio Hopper, Snatcher, Mini Muddlers, Daddy Longlegs, Kate McLaren and Sedgehogs and the best area has been on the north shore from the Dow burn to the dam wall.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) With water clarity slowly improving and water temperatures dipping slightly, the resort has witnessed some excellent fishing returns. On the Boathouse Pool Jon Crowther included a rainbow estimated at 10lbs+ and a blue of 5lbs in his catch and release totals. Mr. Adam released thirteen and Mr. McIntosh ten taken on a variety of patterns. Small dries such as Yellow Owl and Shipman’s performed well; Buzzers also had success, especially black or black/silver. The Burnside Pool has again fished well with pride of place going to Mr. Rutherford who returned seventeen. Other notable returns were Mr. Tapp and Lar Finley with sixteen each and George Birse who had fifteen. Various patterns had success including Floating Fry, Buzzers and the Zonker. During certain times of day dry flies have also taken good numbers of fish. There has not been much angling activity on the Bankside Pool recently due partly to ongoing weed removal, but Frank Sherriff managed to return eight. There are good numbers of fish showing on the surface so a few hours on the pool should be well worth a go. The Woodside Pool (any legal method for bait/spinning) has again fished well with Powerbait producing some excellent results. Spinning has also sorted out some of the larger fish. Mr. Matthew took four rainbows for 9lbs 8oz including a superb fish of 5lbs 8oz, Keith Abbot’s Cub Group caught fourteen trout weighing a total of 26lbs. Jake and Cameron Gilchrist had seven trout for 11.50lbs; Garry and his boys took six rainbows for 11lbs 8oz.50lbs, Mr. Stefano had four fish for 11lbs 4oz whilst the Adam group and the Carrs each took six fish for 10lbs 8oz.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was another very mixed week with the weather but the wind on Sunday should start the cooling down of the water. The fish are still being very fussy cruising round the edges and taking something bright and sparkly. The Bonnybridge AC had 24 fish for 75lbs 8oz with Jim Brown taking the heaviest basket with 4 fish for 14lbs 12oz on a Fab. Harry Peattie from Cambusbarron took a brace for 8lbs on a Fab, Robert Pew, Burntisland, 2 for 7lbs on a Diawl Bach, G. Mathieson, Alloa, 2 for 7lbs on Dries, Clive Clement, Tyndrum, 4 for 13lbs 8oz on a Green Diawl Bach and Ken Clark from Lochgelly used a Coral Dancer to take 2 for 7lbs. Davie Black from Lochgelly caught 2 for 7lbs on a Coral Dancer, Peter McLean, Clackmannan, 2 for 8lbs on a Sunburst, Jim Milne, Alloa, 3 for 12lbs on a Damsel, Tom Taylor, Alloa, 2 for 8lbs on a Damsel and Gavin Wilson from Edinburgh had 3 for 12lbs on Buzzers.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Paul Clark from Edinburgh had a nice 6lbs 8oz specimen on a Daddy and Jim Mckenzie from Prestonpans used a Rabbit to bag a brace weighing in at 7lbs. Catch and release anglers doing well included Gordon Dagg from Pathead with 4 on Dries, Mark Anderson, Musselburgh, 5 on Blobs, A McMahon, Glasgow, 5 on Buzzers, ken Morrison, Edinburgh, 4 on a Bloodworm and Jimmy Anderson from Musselburgh had 3 on a Bloodworm. J Irwin from Haddington took 4 on a Black Rabbit, Brian McIntyre, Dunbar, 3 on Buzzers and Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh managed 4 on various lures.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The first of the large batch of Golden Trout which have been reared over the last few months were stocked on Thursday and seem to have stirred up the other fish. The fishing improved as the week went on and several Browns and Golds appeared in the catch returns along with the more usual Rainbows. The first Goldie of the year was landed by young Cameron Weir from the Millpond. For most of the week the fish were in the top 3 feet of the water and were to be found all around the pond although the Dam and the Island tended to be the best areas. Sometimes the boats were doing well, and at other times it was the bank that was the place to be. The thunderstorm and torrential rain in the early hours of Wednesday morning coloured the water, but the dirty water quickly disappeared and all the ponds were very clear again by Friday. Wet flies and nymphs fished with a medium retrieve was the most successful tactic this week, with a few anglers also taking fish on dry files. Favourite patterns included Damsel, Black Pennell, Kate McLaren, Bibio, Invicta, Cormorant, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear, Black Spider, Yellow Owl and Buzzer. For those who chose to fish with small lures, Cat’s Whisker and Hot-head Damsel were the best choice. Fishery opening hours are now 8.00am to 9.30pm every day.
Amongst those doing well this week were Danny Doherty, Denny, who landed 6 for 16lb 8oz, on two tickets, and also returned a cracking Rainbow estimated at around 10lb. Kyle Crossan, Stirling, took 2 Browns from Swanswater and 2 Golds from the Meadow Pond on Friday, and earlier in the week took 5 for 11lb from Swanswater, R Boyes and his young sons, Aiden and Robert took 6 for 10lb from the Meadow Pond including 5 Golds and Gary Stewart, Glasgow, fishing from the boat, netted 4 for 12lb 12oz, while his son, Martin, took 2 for 6lb from the bank. Rab Bonnar, Stirling landed 4 for 11lb, Stuart Paterson took 2 from Swanswater plus 2 Golds from the Meadow Pond for a total weight of 8lb 12oz, Nan Morrison, Stirling, had 3 for 8lb 8oz in her bag including a Brown, Henry Fulton, Greenock took 3 for 8lb 4oz and returned one and Les Cooper, Dunblane, had 3 for 6lb 12oz including 2 Golds. George Kochanek, Tullibody, 3 for 6lb 4oz, Peter Gettinby took 3 Golds from the Meadow Pond, Robert Nimmo, Stirling, 4lb 8oz Rainbow, Alfie Strachan, Cowie, caught and released 11 in the small ponds and Brian Lockie, Alva, caught and released 6 on Swanswater.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The water temperature is still on the high side making the fish that wee bit more selective. Top of the water sport been really good with great fun being had watching the trout trying to drown the flies before they take it. The Bait Pond has been fishing well one day then slow the next ...finding the right depth is key here one minute there on surface then there on the bottom. Dries and Buzzers are still the top takers especially in the evenings.
James Ure took a nice one at 5lbs, Stephen Layden from Stirling had 4 for 11lbs 8oz – best 4lbs 8oz, Paul Ross, Kilsyth, 2 on C+R – best 4lbs, Connor Leyden, Stirling, 2 blue trout for 9lbs 6oz – best 6lbs and Frank Grey from Cumbernauld took 1 weighing 4lbs.J Mooney from Queenzieburn took a brace for 6lbs, Jim Millar, Kirkintilloch, 3 for 7lbs, S Huge, Kirkintilloch, 2 for 6lbs and Mr Gillespie from Alexandria had 5 for 15lbs.
