Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 25 July 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 24 July 2016.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) It was a very quiet week due to the hot, humid thundery weather but those fishing in the deeper water at the north shore did well using the Ace of Spades, Yellow and oral Dancers and the Olive Damsel. The Falkirk FFC had 13 fish for 23lbs, Roslin British Legion AC, 8 for 16lbs 8oz, Cowdenbeath & District AC, 16 for 33lbs 8oz, Brax AC, 11 weighing 19lbs 12oz and Tillicoultry AC had 16 for 31lbs.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The warmer weather has promoted more rapid weed growth on the ponds and necessitated weed removal, which is ongoing on the Bankside and Woodside pools. The Boathouse Pool has again generally fished well. Pride of place this week goes to Joe Westland who returned fourteen fish including a superb brownie well in excess of 6lbs – a magnificent fish. Bruce Thomson also did exceptionally well returning nineteen fish taken mainly on Buzzers fished with a Fab, Mr. Adam used a variety of patterns to return eleven rainbows and Mr. Anderson took two rainbows for a total of 10lbs 8oz. There has been a lot of surface activity on the Burnside Pool and three anglers each returned nine fish – Ed Valentine, Scott Watson and John Barr. Everything from dries through to lures has had its moment and those who have fared best have changed tactics to find what the fish have been feeding on. The Bankside Pool has not received much attention this week but Frank Sherriff fooled six rainbows, mainly on dries. The water-level is now back closer to normal following weed removal operations, so this should herald better results for the coming week. Top rods on the Woodside Pool this week were the Strachan family who landed ten rainbows for a total weight of 19lbs. Other excellent returns were from the McElhinneys who took eight fish for 14lbs; the Rose group also had eight for 14lbs and a group from a Foster Care Home took six for 12lbs. Powerbait again outscored all other methods with spinning being the next best option.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco). It was strange week having had the hottest day followed by the worst thunder and lightning storm for a long time but after that the fish were right back on the feed giving thee anglers good sport. In the main the fish have been taking at various depths, from under the surface to about mid water about feet down. They are generally taking very slowly to static but with such an abundance of natural feeding for them this makes them very picky.
On Saturday Alexander's AC had a good day taking 37 fish for 116lbs 8oz with Robert Gardiner taking the heaviest basket with 4 fish for 15 lbs and Paul Ross had the heaviest fish at 4lbs 8oz. Hamish Carmichael from Alloa caught 3 for 12lbs – best 6lbs on an Ally with a sunburst tail, S. Fulton, Paisley, 3 for 14lbs on a Damsel, Ian Cartwright, 1 for 3lbs on a Tiny Nymph, Jim Marshall, Bo’ness, 3 for 15lbs – best 6llbs and Charles McKinlay from Denny had 3 for 8lbs on a Pink Head White & Green. Jim Linton from Moodiesburn took 4 fish weighing 13lbs, Stuart Grindlay, Alloa, 3 for 12lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Keith Hunter, Tullibody, 4 for 13lbs on a Black & Green Fritz, F. Malkiewich, Tullibody, 4 for 14lbs on a Damsel, Colin Clement, Tyndrum, 4 for 16lbs on a Green Lure and John Hunter from Sauchie managed 4 for 13lbs on a Yellow Buzzer.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) A quiet week mainly due to the weather and the Trades holidays. A Mahoney from Glasgow had 8 on a CDC, Mark Anderson, Musselburgh, 5 on Blobs, Gordon Dag, Pathead, 4 on Hoppers and Jack Hay from Haddington used Crunchers to bag 10. Ken Morison from Edinburgh caught 3 on the Diawl Bach, Martin Williams, Tranent, 5 on a CDC and Tommy Dickson from Dunbar had 6 on a Black Spider.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week started with very hot, muggy weather but the torrential thunderstorm on Wednesday morning freshened the water and perked the fish up a bit. The fish were generally in the top three feet of the water, but some people were doing well fishing a bit deeper. Plenty fish were seen cruising just below the surface and many anglers were doing well with a fast retrieve in this area. Others did well fishing much more slowly although those fishing static were finding things much harder. Favourite patterns included Kate McLaren, Cormorant, Black Spider, Buzzer, Hare’s Ear, Damsel, Black Pennell and Daddy Long Legs. A few fish were taken on dry flies with Muddler being the most successful. Some days the boats were doing better than the bank and at other times those fishing close in to the shore were having the most luck.
There are signs that the large number of Browns that have been stocked are beginning to become more active with several being caught this week.Steven Anderson, Glenrothes, had a nice Brown in his bag of 4 for 9lb, as did Alec Peachey, Hamilton, in his 2 for 5lb. The biggest fish taken this week was a cracking 7lb 10oz Rainbow landed by John Sneddon, Falkirk, in his bag of 2 for 10lb 4oz. Jim Allan, Kilsyth, had a 6lb 9oz Rainbow. Frank Barr, Falkirk, fishing from the boat as usual, took 5 for 11lb 4oz and another regular, Danny Doherty, Denny, also had 5 fish for 10lb 12oz. Graeme Arthur, Stirling, returned a lovely Rainbow estimated to be around 8lb along with a nice Brown and another couple of Rainbows. A couple of Brown trout were also taken from the Meadow Pond which continues to fish well, as does the Millpond. Many anglers opted for catch and release this week and had a lot of excellent sport on all three ponds.
