The best flies and lures last week included the Black Hopper, Dawson’s Olive, Kate McLaren, Sedge Muddlers, Yellow Dancer and the Sedgehog whilst all areas still continue to fish well.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The past week has seen some horrible wet and windy weather the fishing but it really was what was needed with a good push of water doing the ponds the world of good. It is now back to full levels on all the ponds and although not dirty the water is clearing by the day.
In the last few days the staff have been removing weed from the Bankside Pool on the dam wall and south bank which has made a big difference to fishing, giving a lot more access to the open water. There is still a lot to do and work will be ongoing through the summer. The fishing has produced some positive catches including a total of ten rainbows caught on a Bunny Leech by Mr. Reid on a catch/release ticket. The Boathouse has still been fishing really well with a floating line all that is required at the moment. When the conditions have suited dries have been very productive during some excellent rises. As always Buzzers and a Fab are accounting for a lot of fish and so is the bung. Mr McDermott had 3 fish for 14 lb with the best a 10lb rainbow and Mr McKinney had 4 for 9lb 9oz and put back another 16 on black lures. On the Burnside the water now has about 5 feet visibility and a number of methods have been working from dries to lures, with most fish being taken in the surface layers. Sugar-cube Shipman’s and the Yellow Owl have been two of the more successful dry patterns with the Yellow Dancer being the best lure. Buzzers have also accounted for good numbers of fish, either on a bung or fished washing-line style. Mr. McKinney returned fourteen (lures); Mr. Northrop returned twelve (dries) whilst Ian Gordon and George Birse returned twelve and eleven respectively mainly taken on yellow lures. The Woodside Pool (any legal method) has had some stunning results, especially on Powerbait or small spinners. On Saturday there were 93 fish taken for a combined weight of 142lbs 12oz. The McIntyre group took fourteen fish for a total of 21lbs; the Lamont group caught twelve fish for 18lbs 8oz; Mr. J’Nabi took nine fish for 12lbs 12oz and Mr. Anderson had six for a combined weight of 10lbs.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco). The fish have been taking on the top or just under the surface as the rain has cooled the water slightly. A wide variety of lures and dries have doing well with a floating line. On Saturday the Falcon FFC had a good morning taking 37 fish for 109.1/2 lbs with the heaviest basket going to George Borthwick with 4 fish for 12 lbs. William Williams from Sauchie had a fish of 6lbs 8oz on a Klinkhammer, David Morris, Islay, 4 for 13lbs 12oz on Buzzers, K. McCall, Clackmannan, 2 for 8lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Damsel and Jack Gibb from Clackmannan caught 2 for 7lbs on a Cat’s Whisker. George Hamilton from Blackford had 3 for 8lbs 8oz on Dries, Jim Nesmith, Spittalfield, 2 for 6lbs on Dries, George McLuskie, Spittalfield, 2 for 7lbs on a Damsel and C. Clements from Tyndrum used a Diawl Bach to bag 4 for 12lbs 12oz. Gil Thomson from Motherwell caught 4 for 14lbs on a Damsel and Harry Isherwood from Cumbernauld took a brace weighing 6lbs 8oz on a Blue and White Fritz.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Neil Keillor from Dunbar had 4 on a Black Gnat, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 7 on a Grey & White lure, Chris McGhee, Musselburgh, 10 on Buzzers and Tom Russell, Snr and Jnr shard 20 on Buzzers with the younger taking one at 10lbs. D Wilson from Peebles took on a 7lbs 12oz, Derek Powell, Haddington, 6 on Blobs, Neil Raeburn, Edinburgh, 6 on Buzzers and H Manson from McMerry used a Blue Damsel to take one at 7lbs.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The rain this week freshened up the water and improved fishing conditions greatly, although there was still an easterly or north-easterly breeze all week. The fish were still a bit fussy at times and need the flies to be presented “just so” but were generally in the top 2 or 3 feet of the water and looking to chase something just under the surface. From time to time they were to be seen feeding on the surface, but what they were taking remains a mystery! The bigger Rainbows certainly seem to have been wakened up by the fresher water as a number of cracking specimen were landed this week and another few were returned or lost. The small ponds continue to fish well and proved their worth on Saturday when the top pond was fully booked and those having to fish the small ponds did very well indeed. A wide variety of patterns were taking fish this week included Spider, Butcher, CDC, Montana, Kate McLaren, Cruncher, Stalking Bug, Diawl Bach, Bibio and Damsel. Wet flies, fished on an intermediate line with a reasonably fast retrieve, was the most successful tactic.
Alan Kennedy Jnr, Kilbirnie, 5 for 16lb 13oz including 8lb 7oz Rainbow, Michael Jackson, Beith, 5 for 16lb 9lb including 8lb 7oz Rainbow, Gary Stewart, Glasgow, 2 for 10lb 8oz including 8lb Rainbow, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 2 for 9lb 4oz including 7lb 4oz Rainbow and Joe Potts, Inchinnan, 5 for 13lb including 4lb 8oz Tiger and 2 from the Meadow Pond. Mark Caisley, Kilbirnie, 5 for 12lb including a 4lb Tiger, Jim Potts, Inchinnan, 5 for 11lb 8oz including 2 Blues, Alan Caisley, Kilbirnie, 5 for 11lb 3oz including a Blue, Jim Potts Jnr, Inchinnan, 5 for 11lb including 2 from the Meadow Pond and Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 10lb 8oz. Willie Nyguist, Stirling, 5 for 10lb from the Millpond, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 9lb, Nan Morrison, Stirling, 3 for 7lb 4oz, Eddie McKillop, Glasgow, 3 for 7lb 8oz from the small ponds plus 1 C&R, Eddie McKillop Jnr, Glasgow, 3 for 6 from the small ponds plus 4 C&R and Stan Moore, Falkirk, 2 for 5lb.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The temperature dropped a little last week helping the fishing but some anglers still finding it a wee bit hard even though it was heavily stocked. Small CDCs are doing well; dries are rising lots of fish but still hard to get them in the net and the early morning is producing most fish but hopefully the fishing will be back in to normal after today's well needed rain
Gerry Liddington caught 3 for 10lbs, Steven McAiden, Glasgow, weighing 7lbs, Geoff Baxter, Balloch, 3 for 8lbs, Mr Breckenridge, Kirkintilloch, 6 on C+R – best 9lbs and Mr Buckley from Dumbarton had 3 for 10lbs. Jim Malloy from Kirkintilloch, 4 on C+R, Mr Lynch, Milton of Campsie 3 for 22lbs on C+R, Mr Haughton, Stirling, 1 at 4lbs, Dean Robertson, Denny, 1 for 5lbs, lee Ross, Kilsyth, 2 for 5lbs and Steven Lee from Denny took 2 weighing 7lbs.
