All areas of the fishery are performing well with the best fly and lure patterns including Crunchers, Sedgehog, Muddler and the Kate McLaren.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Despite the recent rain, water-levels in the ponds are still relatively low. However, water clarity is improving slowly throughout the system. On the Boathouse Pool the best returns have been to Dries, Buzzers and White Lures. Several decent blue trout have been taken in the 5-6lbs range; these are in superb condition as are the brown trout, which have been appearing more frequently in catches this week. P Haddow had a great introduction to fly fishing on Wednesday night landing 6 fish including a 5lb blue, a 1lb 8oz brownie and 4 rainbows all caught on a White and Green Dancer. Mr Watson had 14 on Buzzers and a Fab. The Burnside Pool is the most productive at present with many of the fish coming to Dries, Buzzers or Blobs. Generally the better sessions have been early morning (0800-1030am) and late evening. Mr. Braid returned eleven, taken mainly on a Sugar-Cubed Shipman, whilst Mr. Todd returned ten caught on Black/Silver Buzzers fished beneath a bung. Mr McGowan had 24 on Buzzers and a wee Orange Egg. The fishing on the Bankside Pool has been more difficult this week with notably more weed showing. Some of this will be removed in the next few days, which should improve conditions and returns. Overall, Dries and Nymphs have produced the best results, with Yellow Owl and PTNs being the outstanding options. Mr. Thomas returned eight (mainly on PTNs) and Mr. Darcy returned seven. Powerbait has again proved its worth on the Woodside Pool. The Reids had ten fish between them weighing 16lbs 12oz. The McPhersons took eight fish for 16lbs; Forfar legends Abe and Wattie took seven fish for a total of 12lbs 4oz Kirrie Dave had four rainbows for 6lbs 4oz. A number of other good catches were recorded, mainly taken on Powerbait, although spinning still produced some of the larger fish. Over the weekend there was a total of 38 anglers caught 88 fish for a weight of 148lb.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco). On Saturday the Goth Club had a good day taking 47 fish for 148lbs 12oz with the best pair being A. Weir with 4 fish for 14lbs 12oz and Steven Leyden with 4 fish for 13lbs 4oz on Buzzers. Kenny Low from Stirling used a Black Buzzer to take a brace weighing 7lbs, Alec Nelson, Crossgates, 2 for 7lbs on a Diawl Bach, Gordon Porter, Stirling, 3 for 10lbs on a Damsel and Errol Feighan from Bonnybridge caught 4 for 14lbs 8oz – best 5lbs 8oz on a Damsel. J. Timney from Dollar Academy had 1 for 4lbs 8oz on a Green Nymph, Graham King, Almondbank, 3 for 11lbs 4oz on a Bibio, David Quinn, Dunfermline, 3 for 11lbs on Buzzers and H Thomson from Dunfermline took 3 for 10lbs 8oz on a Damsel. David Pitcaithly from Falkirk had 3 for 9lbs 8oz on an Okey Dokey and Hector Wilson from Bannockburn bagged 3 for 10lbs on a Black Rabbit. Davy Black from Lochgelly had 2 for 7lbs on a Bloodworm and Ken Clark from Lochgelly used a Black Buzzer to catch a great brace that tipped the scales at 9lbs 8oz.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) The biggest fish of last week was a belter of a rainbow that tipped the scales at 14lbs and was caught on a CDC by Tom Russell from Earlston who also returned a further 11. H Manson from McMerry too one at 7lbs on a Blue Dancer, Neil Raeburn, Edinburgh, 6 on Buzzers, R Tennent, Dalkeith, 6 on a Halo Blob, Derek Powell, Haddington, 6 on Blobs and Guy Anderson from Musselburgh took 4 on various lures.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) There is a short list of catch returns this week as many anglers were returning fish and many more only managed to catch one or maybe two standard sized rainbows. The list is topped by the first double figure fish to have been landed for some time, a cracking 10lb 9oz Rainbow. There are several more doubles in the water with a good few more due to be stocked over the coming weeks. The fish were being very fussy this week, especially on the hot muggy days midweek, with many anglers reporting loads of follows but these were not translating into takes as the fish turned away at the last moment. At the weekend those doing best were those using a fast retrieve – often as fast as possible – as the fish were looking to chase and needed something fast moving to attract their attention. Most of the week they were in the top 2 or 3 feet and occasionally some were seen moving on the surface. The rain and cooler temperatures at the weekend improved conditions and with the hot weather on hold for the time being, things are looking better for the coming week. Favourite patterns this week included Dancer, Damsel, Cruncher, Daddy, Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach, Buzzer (retrieved) and Kate McLaren.
Alan Brand, Edinburgh, 10lb 9oz Rainbow, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 14lb 12oz including 8lb 7oz Rainbow, Jim Milne, Alloa, 4 for 11lb including 4lb Rainbow and a Brown, N Hadlow 2 for 6lb 8oz from the small ponds and Nan Morrison, Stirling, 2lb 4oz Brown.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) It was a very mixed week at the fishery with the start seeing pretty high temperatures and the end showing dull, cold and wet – this resulted in fewer numbers than normal turning out. The fishing methods were certainly ‘top of the water’ with Buzzers, Spiders, Nymphs and dries taking the bulk of the catches.
The best fish of the week was a nice 6lb specimen caught by Mr. McGowan from Glasgow, Peter Leech, Kirkintilloch, 2 for 6lbs, Tom Brown, Killearn 2 for 11lbs, Steven Layden, Stirling, 3 for 8lbs 8oz, John Thomson, Stirling, 1 weighing 3lbs 8oz and Elizabeth Stephen from Paisley had a fantastic 16 fish catch and release catch. The bait pond too produced some great returns with Craig Rogers from Kirkintilloch having 2 for 7lbs, Mr. McArthur, Milton of Campsie, 2 for 7lbs and Mr. Barr from Kirkintilloch had a brace that tipped the scales at 7lbs 8oz and Mr. Manley from Erskine took 1 for 2lbs 8oz.
