Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 01 February 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 31 January 2016.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The very changeable winter weather has played havoc with the fishing this past week here at Kingennie. There have been a couple of days where fishing has been exceptionally challenging due to the wind and rain, however there have been a few anglers willing to brave the conditions and been rewarded with some good catches.
The Boathouse has really been the most productive recently, mostly due to people looking to get a bit of shelter from the elements. The water clarity has been changing daily with the rain but has been clearing very fast when we get a break in the weather. As usual during these sorts of condition lures have been the best method with Cat’s, Black and Greens, and Blobs doing well. Mr Watson braved the worst of the weather on Friday and had 5 fish on Damsels and a Squirmy with the best being the biggest fish of the week at around 13lb. Mr Prior kept 2 for 5lb 10oz and put back another 7 including an 8lb’er on a mix of Damsels and Buzzers when the water had cleared. Mr Pirie had 2 for 10lb with one at 8lb on an Orange Blob. Mr Connell had 7 on a Squirmy under the bung. The Burnside has been tricky going for most but it seems to be a question of getting the right depth at the moment as some anglers are catching right under the surface and some going down very deep to get fish. Mr Dixon had 8 fish on Black Buzzers, Mr Haddow kept 3 for 7lb and put back another 6 on a Black and Green Nomad fished on a fast glass. Mr Smith returned 7 on a bung and various Bugs fished at around 5 feet, the best estimated at around 10lb. The Bankside has again been quiet but Mr Ritchie who was staying in one of the lodges had 5 fish returned on again a Black and Green Lure with 2 of them being around the 6lb mark. The Woodside has had some anglers out on it and they have done well with most of the fish appearing to be held up in the bay by the shop. Most methods have been catching as location has been the key to getting them. Mr Mitchell had 4 fish for 7l on the fly and Powerbait and Mr Fowler had 3 fish for 5lb on a Mepp.
Spaces are starting to fill up for the Scottish Stillwater team qualifier on march 27th but there is still room so if you are looking to fish it please call 01382 350777/350213 for more details

3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It has been a very quiet week due to the inclement weather for fishing but the few who braved the howling gales etc. were well rewarded. William Williams from Sauchie took 2 for 8lbs – best 4lbs 8oz on an Ally, Gerry Rattray, Blackford, 1 for 6lbs on a Bloodworm, David Hunter, Alloa, 2 for 6lbs 8oz on a Blob, Brian Murdoch, Stirling, 2 for 7lbs on an Ally and William Peattie from Leslie used an Ace of Spades to bag one weighing 3lbs 8oz. Robert Kettles from Perth had 1 for 3lbs 8oz on a Black Lure and Ian Souter, Methven, caught a brace for 4lbs on a Green & Black Lure.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) John Daly from Edinburgh had the best bag by far last week with a great catch of 22 fish taken on the App Bloodworm. Also doing well was Shaun McGarry from Bonnyrigg with 10 on Buzzers, Mark Anderson, Musselburgh, 9 on a Black Rabbit, Ken Morrison, Edinburgh, 4 on Buzzers and Paul Harvey from Musselburgh managed 8 on Apps. Neil Raeburn from Edinburgh took 4 on Buzzers, Chris McGhee, Musselburgh, 6 on a Rabbitiser and Jimmy Anderson from Portobello took 6 on an Apps Bloodworm

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Yet again the stormy weather dominated the week and only a few hardy anglers made their way to Swanswater to enjoy some excellent fishing. The water level was very high midweek but dropped and cleared by the weekend when anglers were greeted by lying snow and sleety showers!! The fish were mostly in the far bay and the bridge area during the week and moved to the front of the island and the channel at the weekend. Lures or Buzzers took most of the fish although a few were also caught on nymphs such as Diawl Bach, Montana and Damsel. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 4.30pm.
C. Dillon, Glasgow, 5lb 8oz Rainbow, Willie Nyguist, Stirling, 4 for 11lb including 2 Blues, Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, 3 for 11lb 8oz, C Brown and L Aitken, Glasgow, shared 6 for 17lb 4oz from the boat including a Blue and Paul Christie from  Alloa, 2 for 7lb. Kevin Fyall, Tillicoultry, 2 for 6lb, John Middleton, Shotts, 2 for 6lb,Frank Boggie, Helensburgh, 2 for 6lb, Alan Burke, Alloa, 4lb 4oz Rainbow and Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, 4lb Rainbow.
