Fishing report by Jim Boyd
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 25 January 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 24 January 2016.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It’s been a great week of fishing at Kingennie with some great returns and some big fish featuring in the catches. The water is still quite clear and is only getting better however this rain forecast for through the week may cause some problems with floodwater.
The Burnside really has been the standout pond over the last week with a lot of fish getting caught particularly in the top layers of the water; a floating line is about all you really need at the moment... Over the last four days from Thursday to Sunday there have been 38 catch and release anglers returning 207 fish from the pond giving a very good average catch. Notable catches include Mr Westland with 12 fish including one estimated at 14lb and another at 12lb caught on a Black and Green Lure, Mr Barlow had 12 on Black Buzzers, Mr Watson had 6 including one of around 15lb on a Black Lure and Mr Roy had 11 on Cormorants including one of around 14lb. The Boathouse has cleared really well and the fishing has been very steady. Lures are catching fish but a more natural approach has done very well. Mr Cowan had 12 returned on Snatchers and a Blob fished under the bung. Mr Tidcolme had 4 for 11lb and a couple returned on various small lures. Mr Eagan had 3 for 9lb on a small Damsel. The biggest fish of the week was taken by Mr Stevens with a fish estimated at around 13lb caught on a Diawl Bach. The Woodside hasn’t seen many anglers but those who have fished have done very well with nearly everyone leaving with their limit. David and Carl had their 4 fish for 7lb on spinners. Mr Mitchell had 3 fish for 5lb on the fly and Mr Stuart had his 4 fish for 7lb on Powerbait fished under the float.
Spaces are starting to fill up for the Scottish Stillwater team qualifier on March 27th but there is still room so if you are looking to fish it please call 01382 350777/350213 for more details.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The water was frozen for a week and the lowest temperature -8 degrees so the water is now a lot colder and the fish have slowed down as they always do when it gets too cold. Most anglers are catching the fish in the first 2 - 3 feet with an extremely slow retrieve.
Jim Donnelly from Tullibody took 3 for 11lbs – best 4lbs on a Buzzer, Roy Smith, Denny, 1 for 4lbs on an Ace of Spades, Matt Ritchie, Perth, 1 for 5lbs on a Mini Yellow Dancer, Ian Sloan, Perth, 3 for 8lbs 8oz on a Damsel and George Carstairs from Dunning used a Black Lure to take a brace weighing 7lbs.John Graham from Crieff had 2 for 6lbs on a Black Lure, Kenny Low, Stirling, 2 for 5lbs on a Black Buzzer, Ewan Kilgannon, Bannockburn, 2 for 6lbs on a Hot Head Damsel and J Bell from Airth took 3 for 11lbs on a Damsel. W Cane from Airdrie had 3 for 13lbs on a Yellow Dancer, John Graham, Airdrie, 3 for 9lbs on a Yellow Dancer and Jake Munroe from Perth managed 3 weighing 9lbs – best 4lbs on a Black Buzzer.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) The biggest fish landed last week was a cracking 13lb 8oz rainbow taken on a Buzzer by Ben Robertson from Penicuik and Jocky Dyatt, Dalkeith also used a Buzzer to catch one at 10lbs 8oz. Also doing well was Peter Thorburn from Edinburgh with 4 – best 8lbs on a Buzzer, Steve Rogers, Edinburgh, 3 on lures, Shane Kelly, Hawick 10 on Buzzers and Shaun McGarry from Bonnyrigg took 10 on Buzzers. Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 5b on lures and Jock Kettles, Edinburgh, 7 on Buzzers.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) In a week that started with snow on the ground and sub-zero temperatures and ended with highs of 13oC, there were some excellent days’ fishing and some days when it was a little harder. The water temperature has risen 5o in a week from 2oC last Monday to 7oC this morning. The fish started the week around 3 to 4 feet down and a bit sluggish, with many of them in the far bay. As the week progressed and the temperature rose they moved around more and the island, channel and roadside became hot spots by the weekend, when they were also much nearer the surface, mostly in the top 2 feet. Choice of flies did not alter much although a faster retrieve was needed later in the week. Favourite patterns included Buzzer, Bloodworm, Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, Diawl Bach, Damsel and Cruncher, with the best colour being Black for much of the week. Some cracking 4lb to 6lb fish were landed this week including a lovely 6lb 4oz Tiger. The Fishery is now open every day from 8.00am to 4.30pm
Jim Kerr, Shotts, 6lb 4oz Tiger, Alex Brodie, Cumbernauld, 6b 4oz Rainbow, Willie Walker, Falkirk, 3 for 11lb 8oz including 6lb Rainbow and a Blue, Robert Park, Lennoxtown, 5lb 8oz Rainbow, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 19lb 4oz including Rainbows at 5lb and 4lb 8oz, plus 2 caught and released and Iain Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 for 15lb. Derek Russell, Stoneyburn, 5 for 11lb 8oz from the small ponds plus 11 caught and released, Robert Anderson, Stoneyburn, 5 for 10lb 12oz from the small ponds plus 13 caught and released, Frank Turner, Alloa, 4 for 13lb including 4lb 12oz Rainbow, Jim Milne, Alloa, 4 for 13lb, Mark Anderson, Kilsyth, 4 for 12lb including 4lb 12oz Rainbow, plus 4 caught and released and Barry Hamilton, Muirhead, 4 for 12lb 8oz including 4lb 8oz Rainbow and a Blue. Steven Gilfeather, Balloch, 3 for 10lb including a Blue, Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, 3 for 8lb 4oz from the Meadow Pond, plus 1 caught and released, Allan Laing, Carluke, 2 for 7lb 4oz and John Middleton, Shotts, 2 for 7lb including a 4lb 8oz Rainbow. Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, 2 for 6lb 8oz including 4lb 4oz Rainbow, Eddie Hunt, Cumbernauld, 2 for 6lb including a Blue and Kevin Gray, Camelon, caught and released 15.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The recent spell of mild weather certainly got the big fish on the move with Gavin Hill from Ayrshire catching and releasing a beautifully conditioned brown trout of around the 12lb mark.
