Fishing report by Jim Boyd
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 09 November 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 08 November 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery will close for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October – we will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The unseasonably mild weather has resulted in a number of anglers still catching fish on dry flies. Water-levels have now risen to autumn heights and overall the fishing has been highly productive. The Boathouse Pool received a lot of attention last week; consequently some exceptional fish were landed. Mr. Connell took a beautifully conditioned rainbow weighing 15lbs; Mr. Williamson returned another fine fish at 14lbs, whilst the Baikies returned rainbows of 12lbs and 10lbs. Successful patterns varied but fish in the pond were taken on everything from dries to standard lures. There is a lot of leaf-fall on the surface but this has not dissuaded the fish from feeding. On the Burnside Pool a number of fish were taken on dries but there have also been good results from buzzers and nymphs. Andy Wood had 39 fish on catch and release, with Ian Barlow releasing 20. Robert Gibson, Davie Simpson and George Birse returned 14 each, with the latter including fish of 10lbs and 7lbs. Frank Sherriff lead the field on the Bankside Pool with 9 fish on catch and release - the largest being a fine 6lbs rainbow. Best patterns included Bloodworm variations, Buzzers and Black & Green lures. On the any legal method pool, the Woodside, Powerbait again ruled supreme. However, increasing numbers of fish are being taken on small spinners. On Saturday six anglers took 26 fish for a total weight of 38lbs.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fish are still being caught in the first 3 - 4 feet with a wide variety of lures and dries. Kong from Crieff used a Yellow Dancer to take a brace weighing 10lbs, Jimmy Young, Alloa, 3 for 11lbs 8oz on a Black & Green Fritz,
Dave Wilkie, Stirling, 3 for 12lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Ken Bell, Perth, 2 for 9lbs 4oz on an Orange Nomad and Harry Robertson from Perth caught 2 for 8lbs 4oz on a Black Damsel. Allan Ford from Milnathort had 2 for 10lbs 12oz on a Gold Head Daddy, Boo Haughton, Fallin, 3 for 12lbs on a Gold Dancer, Manuel Geraldus, Hallbeath, 3 for 13lbs on a Bunny Leech and Dougie McKendrick from Alva caught a brace weighing 8lbs 8oz on a Blue Buzzer. Brian Harper from Alva took 2 for 6lbs on a Black Fritz, Henry Laurence, Glasgow, 2 for 6lbs 4oz on an Orange Fritz and A Hooper from Aylth took 2 for 8lbs 4oz on an Olive Damsel.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Peter Duncan from Edinburgh had 4 including one at 9lbs on a Green & White Rabbit, Ken Morrison, Edinburgh, used a Black & Silver lure to take one at 10lbs 8oz, J Cairns, McMerry, took 2 for 12lbs 8oz – best 10lbs on a Daddy and Martin Williams from Tranent had 6 on a CDC. The Scottish Disabled Fund Raiser was a huge success with the 41 anglers catching 140 fish. The winner was Gregg McLaren from Perth with 11, John Johnstone, Allandale Tarn, came second with 9 and third placed was Stewart Barclay from Edinburgh with 8. Highlight of the day was Charles Henderson from Bonnyrigg catching a couple of fish estimated at 14lbs each.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Although the sunshine was replaced by damp, misty weather this week, it remained very mild for the time of year and the fishing conditions continued to be excellent. The fish are still in the top 2 to 3 feet of the water and are very active looking to chase a wide variety of small lures, nymphs and wet flies. On the really calm days fish were seen moving on the surface but few were tempted by dry flies. Favourite patterns included Dancer, Nomad, Cat’s Whisker, Damsel, Cormorant, Black Spider and Buzzer and the best tactic was a floating line and a fast retrieve. Fish are being taken all round the main pond and although the boats were doing very well at the weekend, the bank fished well during the week. The two small ponds are also producing a good number of fish for those choosing to fish there. The Fishery is now open 8.00am to 4.30pm every day.
Robert Smith, Airth, 2 for 12lb 8oz including 8lb 12oz Blue, Greg Guthrie, Callander, 4 for 17lb, Gary McLachlan, Greenock, 5 for 14lb 8oz plus 2 caught and released, Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 12lb plus 3 caught and released and Robert Park, Glasgow, 4 for 12lb. Stuart McBean, Clydebank, 4 for 12lb, Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, 3 for 11lb plus 2 caught and released, Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 6 for 19lb plus 3 caught and released, Ian Steele, Duntocher, 3 for 9lb 8oz and Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, 3 for 9lb 8oz plus 3 caught and released. Rab Bonar, Alloa, 3 for 9lb 8oz, Eddie McKillop, Glasgow, 3 for 9lb including one from the Meadow Pond, D Dougall, Eyemouth, 2 for 7lb 4oz including 4lb 4oz Rainbow and I Callow, Eyemouth, 3 for 6lb 8oz. Ged Fulton, Greenock, 2 for 6lb 4oz, Davy Quinn, Dunfermline, 2 for 6lb 4oz, Alex Knox, Glasgow, 4lb 4oz Rainbow and Gary Waugh, Cumbernauld, caught and returned 23 from the boat.
