Fishing report by Jim Boyd

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 17 August 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 16 August 2015.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The top taking flies last week were the Cormorant, Sedgehogs, Sedge Muddlers, Crunchers, Snatchers and the Hot Head Damsel whilst all areas of the fishery are performing well. On the individual front Bob Dick & Geoff Hemmings from Kinross took 11 fish for 25lbs, Alan & James MvLaurin, Braco, 6 for 13lbs 5oz, Brian Thorne, Glen Devon, 4 for 9lbs and released 2 and Roy Paterson from Sauchie took 4 fish weighing 9lbs. Duncan & Reece McRae from Perth kept 5 fish weighing 12lbs, Peter Gaunt & Ian Forrest, Blackford, 5 for 12lbs and Donald McGregor and Ian McGroughar from Alva kept 8 fish weighing 20lbs.
The RAF Northern League AC had 26 fish for 61lbs and released 10, Townhill AC, 54 fish for 115lbs, Dunfermline Rusty Nail AC had 17 fish for 35lbs, Black Bull FC, 33 for 72lbs and Perth RASC AC caught 19 weighing 43lbs 12oz.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry). It’s been another fine week of weather with just a few rain showers around to spoil it slightly. The fishing has been steady in all the ponds with each ones having spells of doing very well. The clarity in all the ponds is getting really good with the Woodside and Bankside being extremely clear making for some interesting and sometimes frustrating fishing. The evening fishing is still available with the off the water time at 9.30 at the moment. The Boathouse has been on good form with the fish well spread out taking a number of different things. As always lures have been best with Hot Head Damsels standing out as the best fly. Dries are also doing well when conditions suit, with Mr Saunders landing a 10lb plus rainbow on a Shuttlecock. The Burnside has been good but you have to go deep to get them. A sinking line and various lures have been the best way to catch them letting it go down deep. The bung fished fairly deep down has been the other way of taking them with small Buzzers and a Cat Bug have been popular patterns for taking fish. Mr Stevens had 13 fish on Buzzers with the best around 6 lb. Mr Rice had the best fish of the week with one of the big blues taken on a Damsel. The Bankside has been the hardest of the ponds with the fish sat out at range at times. The best method has still been on a Floating Fry and other small Nymphs with a bit of pearl in it. Mr Easson had 8 on the Fry and Buzzers and Mr Whyte had an 8lb rainbow on a Black Nomad. The Woodside has been very busy and this combined with the heat we have had has put the fish very deep and Power Bait fished with a lead has been the best method by far. Over the past week there has been 146 anglers landed 241 fish for a total weight of 385lb.
On Sunday the 13th of September a fundraising competition will be held to help raise funds for the Scottish Stillwater Fly Fishing Team who will be travelling to Ireland in October for the international. This is a self- funded team and all support given to the team is greatly appreciated. The competition will be fished to catch and release rules with lunch included and a raffle on the day. Fishing will be charged at £25 per head. If you would like any more information, please call on 01382 350777/350213 for more details.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The biggest Tiger ever landed at Swanswater was taken last week – a cracking 8lb 11oz specimen. Frank Barr from Falkirk, fishing from the boat, is the new record holder.   In a week with probably the kindest weather for months including some warm sunshine, the fishing continued to be good.   For most of the week fish were being seen moving on or just below the surface and many were actively looking for flies to chase.   Towards the weekend they went a little deeper but were still feeding in the top 3 feet or so.   On Saturday, anglers fishing buzzers deep and slow were successful as were those trying dries and nymphs on or just under the surface.  Conditions were a little harder on Sunday and although fish were still showing all they were interested in were small nymphs or dry flies.    Favourite patterns included Green Nymph, Diawl Bach, Sedgehog, Damsel, Greenwell, Kate McLaren, Spider, Sedge and various Buzzers. Rab Bonner, fishing from the bank this weekend, was broken by a 4lb Rainbow which took his buzzer and indicator.   Fortunately for Rab, Jim Donnelly, fishing from the boat, managed to hook the indicator and play and land the fish before returning fish and tackle to Rab!
Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 8 for 27lb 8oz including 8lb 11oz Tiger and a Brown,
Stewart Nicholson, Knightswood, in two visits. 6 for 28lb 12oz including 8lb 6oz Rainbow and 7lb 10oz Blue and  David Aitken, East Kilbride, 4 for 14lb 5oz including 7lb 2oz Tiger, Douglas Murray, Bridge of Allan, 2 for 11lb including 7lb Blue and 4lb Brown. Charlie Waldie, Airdrie, 6lb Blue – his first ever fish on the fly, Stephen Mullin and young son, Liam, Pitlochry, shared 6 for 16lb 8oz including 2 Tigers at 4lb and 3lb 2oz from Swanswater and 4 from the Meadow Pond and Alec Wilkie, Glasgow, 5 for 18lb. Connor Meiklejohn, Stirling, 2 for 6lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond, Jim Donnelly, Milton of Campsie, caught and released 9 and South African visitor, R Irvine, caught and released 7.

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) There was some excellent catches taken off last week with those doing best using Buzzers and Dries when the fish were sitting high in the water and the likes of the Yellow Dancer, Ally McCoist and the Damsel when you had to go that bit deeper. On the catch and release front Mr Callum from Moodiesburn took 3 rainbows and a pair of blues, Peter Tanner, Kirkintilloch 7 rainbows and a blue, John Shaw, Kilsyth had 4 and Stuart Sutherland from Kirkintilloch had a great result with 10.
