Fishing report by Jim Boyd
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 10 August 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 09 August 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The best flies last week were the Bibio Hopper, Snatcher, Mini Muddler, Daddy Long Legs and the Kate McLaren whilst the top fishing area is the north shore from the Dow Burn to the4 Dam Wall. On the individual front Eddie McKillop and his son Eddie took 8 for 18lbs, Peter Ash 7 Bill Slater from Edinburgh, 5 for 10lbs 4oz, Kenny MacMillan & John Tait, Perth, 9 for 19lbs and Robin Eadie from Kinross caught and released 5. The angling clubs also did well with Midlothian AA taking 5 for 12lbs, Perthshire FC took 3 for 6lbs, Dundee West End had 40 for 93lbs 14oz and Falkirk Municipal AC kept 17 for 38lbs 3oz. Longannet AC 12 for 26lbs 14oz, Gartcosh AC 44 for 101lbs 15oz, the Railway Inn AC kept 7 for 17lbs, Clydesdale Bank AC 42 for 92lbs and released 4 whilst Abercrombie Arms AC had 3 for 7lbs 6oz.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry). The weather this week has been changeable again but settled down for the weekend and it has fished well as a result. The water is reasonable clear in all the ponds and that has certainly helped. The osprey is still coming in every day usually first thing in the morning and again late in the evening and always gets his fish. The Boathouse pool is still fishing really well with most of the fish getting caught coming to either dry flies or lures such as the Yellow Dancers and Hot Head Damsels. The biggest fish from the pond this week was caught by C Walker weighing 10lb 12oz caught on a Black Lure and gave a great account of itself going round the island on the pond and into his backing. Other notable catches were the Deed Ferret group with 12 fish for 46lb with the largest a 9lb 8oz rainbow. The Fishing Inc. group took 12 fish for 41lb with the largest being 6lb. The Burnside pool has been very changeable and the fish have been moving around a lot, one minute they are on the surface taking dries the next they are 10 feet down wanting to chase lure so it has paid to be mobile and change tactics when needed. Fly wise, the Floating Fry has been taking a lot of fish as usual as well as Sedges and Shipman’s. When fishing lures it has been a Damsel or an Orange Blob or a Black and Green Fritz that has taken most fish. Mr McNeil had the biggest of the week from here with an 8/9lb blue trout taken on a Blob that was safely returned. The Bankside has seen most of the fish still sat in the first bay down to the dam wall. Again the Floating Fry has been the best fly on this pond with the fish looking up and the fry in the pond starting to become very evident in the margins. With this some of the other fry patterns are doing well also, Pearly Pheasant Tails, Mini Cats and Yellow Dancers have all taken fish this week. Mr Birse returned 23 in 3 visits on fry and Mr Forbes had the biggest fish on the complex this week with an 11lb 12oz rainbow taken on a Yellow Dancer. The Woodside continues to be very popular and there have been a lot of fish getting caught but it has been very noticeable when the fish are feeding and when they are not. Powerbait is still the best bait fished fairly deep down but other baits are working as well. Over the weekend 58 anglers landed 91 fish for a weight of 152lb.
On Sunday the 13th of September a fundraising event will be held to help raise funds for the Scottish Stillwater fly fishing team that will be travelling to Ireland in October for the international. Entry will be £25 per person and will include lunch and prizes - there will also be a raffle on the day. The fishing will be fished on Burnside and Boathouse to catch and release rules. Anyone who would like to fish the competition please call 01382 350777/350213 for more details and to reserve a peg.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It has been another good fishing week with plenty of fish being caught just under the surface and no more than two feet down. Dries, Buzzers, Hare's Ear, Diawl Bach and a wide variety of lures have been doing well.
Allan Mitchell from Stirling had 3 fish for 9lbs 3oz on Dries, Ronnie Stanovich, Glasgow, 3 for 13lbs – best 5lbs on a Hare’s Ear, J Farrell, Grangemouth, 3 for 9lbs 12oz on a Buzzer and J. Young from Alloa took 3 fish weighing 10 lbs on Buzzers. Isobella Hopkins from Dupplin had a brace for 4lbs on a Deer Hair Sedge, Peter Brown, Menstrie, 4 for 12lbs on a Yellow Dancer, A. Birrell, Alloa, 4 for 13lbs on an Orange Blob and Ken Clark from Lochgelly had 2 for 7lbs on a Yellow Dancer. S Wilson from Tranent caught 1 fish for 3lbs 8oz on a Daddy, Robert Chapman, Linlithgow, 4 for 12lbs on Gold Lures and Buzzers and Dave Lawson from Methven took 3 for 11lbs 4oz – best 7lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer.

Ray Bain from Edinburgh caught and released 7 on a Black Damsel, Bruce Hunter, Edinburgh, 7 on Buzzers, Ian Callow, Dunbar, 7 on a Yellow Owl, Jimmy Anderson, Edinburgh, 4 on Buzzers, A Cuthbertson, Morpeth, 3 on Buzzers and Sandy Dean from Alnwick used a Zonker to catch 3.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The fishing conditions continue to be pretty good for the time of year with water temperature sitting 12o-13oC and great water clarity. A lot of fish are showing on the surface but most are taking just under. The fishing was at its best when the breeze was coming out of the west with things a little harder when the wind moved round to the east. At the weekend anglers were seeing loads of fish cruising round, but tempting them out was a bit harder. Big fish are still being seen, and caught, with some cracking Tigers still in the area around the burn mouth. Favourite patterns this week included Sedge, Hopper, Daddy Long Legs, Bibio, Snatcher, Kate McLaren, plus the usual lures and buzzers. Most of the time the fish are looking to chase and anglers are getting a lot of sport with fish following the fly in and turning away at the last minute. The Fishery is now open from 8.00am to 9.00pm every day.
Sean McGill, Airdrie, 2 for 9lb 8oz including 7lb 4oz Tiger, Nan Morrison, Stirling 3 for 11lb 13oz including 6lb 10oz Rainbow, Alec Peachey, Hamilton, 5lb Tiger, Stewart Nicholson, Knightswood, 5 for 17lb 4oz and Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 14lb 12oz plus 4 caught and released. Allan Laing, Carluke, 5 for 14lb plus 3 caught and released, Robin Scott, Penicuik, 5 for 14lb including a Blue and Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, in three visits, 10 for 31lb 12oz plus 4 caught and released. Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 9 for 25lb, Stephan and Paul Miller, Stirling, shared 8 for 22lb, William Williams, Alloa, 3 for 10lb 8oz including 4lb Rainbow, Tam Morgan, Motherwell, 3 for 9lb plus 8 caught and released and John Mooney, Queenzieburn, 2 for 8lb 12oz. Alan Smith, Cumbernauld, 2 for 6lb 8oz including 4lb 4oz Rainbow, Gary Smith, Alloa, 2 for 6lb 8oz, James Elliott, Stirling, 2 for 6lb 8oz, Malcolm McKay, Dunfermline, 2 for 6lb 8oz and Martin Stewart, Glasgow, 2 for 6lb including a Tiger.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The fishery is performing really well at the moment with catch and release anglers doing especially well on the fly only pond with hard fighting blue trout being caught up to 9lb. The top taking flies have included the Daddy Long Legs, Shuttlecock buzzers, Ally McCoist and various CDCs. The new bait pond is producing some lovely fish – largest so far a 9lb 6oz rainbow taken by Ian Baxter but bait anglers need to keep an eye on their rods the unattended rods are getting pulled in.
On the catch and release front Mr Dobby from Cumbernauld had 4 rainbows and 2 blues, Mr Taylor, Kilsyth, 4, Mr Wright, Kilsyth, 1 at 6lbs, Brian Forrest, Dunfermline 4 including a 7lb blue and Robin Ferlie from Falkirk had 5. Alan Fife Bearsden, 4, Mr Forbes, Bearsden, 4 rainbows and 3 blues and Ian Anderson from Cumbernauld had 8.
Bill Neilson had a brace weighing 5lbs, Mr Gillespie, Kilsyth, 2 for 7lbs, Peter Stark, Kilsyth, 1 blue at 5lbs and Archie Stark, Kirkintilloch 1 at 3lbs. Well done the trio of Michael Malone, Andrew Finlay and Mr Dermott who cycled all the way from Glasgow and were well rewarded with 8 great fish weighing 23lbs. Mr Wallace from Dumfries took 4 for 9lbs 10z, Mr Currie, Milton of Campsie, 2 for 6lbs 8oz, Mr Noble, Glasgow, 1 at 3lbs and S. McColl from Glasgow caught 3 for 8lbs 8oz.
