Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 09 February 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 08 February 2015.

It has been a pretty dire week yet again for the fishery reports due to the consistently keen overnight frosts and chilly days that has seen the ice lasting much longer than is normal and of course the lack of any sort of wind didn’t help either. Orchill Loch, Markle and Woodburn saw virtually no customers at all last week but thankfully the weather has turned around and it looks as if the current cold spell at least is at an end – fingers and everything else crossable crossed that the worst of the winter has passed.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL SPRING 2015

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The recent frosts resulted in a certain amount of water being iced over. However, for those brave enough to venture out there has been some reasonable sport. The cold weather has also seen several additional bird species become more prominent with fieldfare and little grebes seen locally. The Boathouse Pool remained clear of ice and received quite a lot of attention during the week and at the weekend. A decent number of fish around the 3lbs mark were landed, mainly on Buzzers or Bloodworm patterns. Two large fish were also hooked but both managed to evade capture. Although ice has affected the Burnside Pool it still produced some excellent catches with the best fish reported being a beautifully conditioned rainbow trout weighing 7lbs 8oz taken by Les Gaul. Catch and release numbers were high – Davie Simpson releasing 21 and Robert Gibson 14. The key to decent results was finding the right depth and then being able to stay on the fish as they moved up/down in the water during the day. The Bankside Pool was badly affected by ice later in the week but not before Ian Barlow had managed to catch and return a magnificent specimen rainbow estimated at 12lbs+. This was part of an eleven fish haul, taken mainly on Buzzers. At this stage there is still ice on about three-quarters of the pool but with daytime temperatures beginning to climb this should disappear in the next few days. Trout in the Woodside Pool have remained steady in their preference for Powerbait with spinners being another decent option. Karl took five fish for 7lbs 4oz .25lbs and now most of the pond is ice-free.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Once again the Fishery remained open despite the freezing temperatures with the aerators doing a good job keeping the ponds more or less ice-free.   The fishing got harder as the week went on and the cold made the fish more lethargic.   Having been in the top 2 to 4 feet of the water for most of the winter, the fish are now in the bottom couple of feet and anglers need to go much deeper to find them.   Buzzers, Bloodworm and lures such as Cat’s Whisker and Dancer are taking most of the fish, with a few also falling to Diawl Bach and other nymphs.   The fish are in excellent condition and some lovely coloureds featured in the catch returns including Blues up to 4lb and Greens.
Chris Kerr, East Kilbride, in two visits, 7 Blues for 23lb 12oz, Willie Nyguist, Stirling, in two visits 7 for 20b 4oz including a Blue, B Brown, Neptune Game Fishers, 5 for 12lb from the Meadow Pond and John Alcock, Balloch, 5 for 11lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond including a Blue. Robert Anderson, Glasgow, 5 for 11lb 4oz from the small ponds including 2 Blues, Allan Laing, East Kilbride, in two visits 4 for 12lb 8oz including 4lb Blue and a Green, Davy Simpson, Forfar, 2 for 6lb 12oz including a Blue and Frank Barr, Falkirk, 2 for 6lb 4oz. Alan Grant, Glasgow, 2 for 6lb including a Green, Peter O’Brien, Camelon, 2 for 6lb including a Blue, Alan Armstrong, Dollar, 2 for 6lb and Brian Lockie, Alva, 8 caught and released.
