ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 16 February 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 15 February 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) Weather permitting it is planned to open the fishery for the 2015 season on Saturday 28th February. The usual Damsels, Cats Whisker, Dancers and Buzzers usually work best at this time of year and to begin the season the fish should all be about the 2lb mark.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather seems to have finally broken and slightly warmer weather has made a big difference here a Kingennie, with all the ice gone for well over a week the water temperature has settled and the ponds are being a bit more consistent. There is a slight tinge of colour in all the ponds after some rain which has actually helped with a flush of fresh water. On Sunday the 8th of March Kingennie will be holding the second qualifying round of the Scottish Stillwater Team qualifiers, this will be a catch and release completion fished over the Boathouse and the Burnside with the top percentage of anglers going through to the semi-finals. This is a great competition with huge support throughout the country and is a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of completion fishing and have a chance to represent your country. The fishing itself this past week has been quite challenging for some anglers but those who got there location and tactics right were rewarded with some lovely fish. On the Boathouse Mr Walker had his 2 fish for 5lb and put back another 10 including a fish of around 5lb and another of around 7lb all taken on Bloodworms. Mr Jones had the biggest fish of the week with an immaculately conditioned rainbow of 8lb 12oz as well as putting back another 6 on Buzzers and Cormorants. The fish seem to be shying away from big lures but seemed to be happy to take smaller flies with confidence. After weeks of really good fishing the Burnside has slowed down a bit and the fish have been pretty hard to temp but it seems as always that it is a case finding the correct depth. Mr Williams had a good result after changing to his fast sinker and a Damsel when he went on to take a rainbow of 7lb in his bag of 3 for 11lb 8oz as well as putting back 6 more. Mr Simpson had a good day returning 10 including a fish estimated at just under 10lbs on Blobs and Squirmies. On the days when the weather has been a bit better they have been up in the water and young Robert Gibson took full advantage when he had 9 fish in quick succession after changing to Spiders on a midge tip. The Bankside has probably been the best pond over the last few days, Mr Gibson again doing well on Squirmies landing 10 in unfavourable conditions. Mr Sheriff continued his run of big fish with his 3rd estimated at over 10lbs in a month with his latest falling to a Yellow Dancer in a haul of 8 fish. Mr Jones had the best result of the week landing 16 fish in 3 hours on a gold head Jersey Herd under an indicator with 2 fish estimated between 4 and 5lb.
The Woodside has been quite hard with a lot of the fish held up around the inflow pipe where it has been fairly easy to get a fish or 2 on most methods. Mr Stevenson and his son did really well fishing through the rain to get 6 fish for 10lb on worms.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The best catch last week went to Tommy Dickson from Dunbar who used a Black and Peacock Spider to catch and release 16 fish. Also doing well was Alec Jack from Bonnyrigg with 11 on a Lime Green Buzzer, Mick Mulgrew, Danderhall, 9 on a Buzzer and George Boag from Edinburgh had 8 on an Apps Bloodworm. Stewart Grieve from Edinburgh used a Yellow Dancer to catch 7, Derek Powell, Haddington, 6 on a Dancer, Jackie Hay, Haddington, 6 on Buzzers and David Savage from Edinburgh had 5 on a Black & Green Cormorant.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fish have been moving on the top but in the main are being taken from under the surface to about 3 - 5 feet down on a wide variety of flies. Keir Legget, from Clackmannan had 3 fish for 6lbs on an Ally and a Yellow Dancer, Andy Airnes, Clackmannan, 3 for 7lbs 8oz on an Ally, W Williams, Sauchie, 4 for 12lbs on an Ally and Tex from Cornton had a brace for 6lbs on an Ally. David Brown from Dumbarton took 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Squirmy Worm, Jim McColl, Dumbarton, 3 for 12lbs 8oz – best 6lbs on a Damsel and Jim Marshall from Stirling had 3 for 8lbs on a Squirmy Worm. Hamish Carmichael from Tullibody used an Ally McCoist to bag a brace weighing 7lbs 8oz, Jack Horne, Auchterarder, 1 for 2lbs on a Buzzer and Joe Hunter from Tullibody took 1 at 2lbs on a Black Fritz.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The start of the week saw the fish being caught deep in the water, with fish around two feet off the bottom, due to several nights of hard frost. During this spell the best fishing on Swanswater was in the far bay and from the island. Milder weather towards the end of the week and at the weekend meant the fish returned to closer to the surface, about three to four feet, and were being caught at the dam wall, the roadside and behind the islands. Both the Millpond and Meadow Pond saw some good sport. At the start of the week the best flies were lures including Cut Throat Cat, Dancer and Damsel, as the temperatures increased more fish were taken on Buzzers. There is a large variation in colours of the fish being caught, with some featuring in the best bags this week.
Willie Nyguist, Stirling, 5 for 16lb including 2 Blues, a Green and a Gold, G Fellows, Rutherglen, 5 for 15lb 12oz including 2 Blues, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 15lb including 2 Blues and a Gold, Walter Smith, Balloch, 5 for 13lb 12oz including a Blue and a Green and Allan Laing, Carluke, 4 for 12lb 12oz including 3 Blues.
