Lake of Menteith
26th Aug 2014
6ft Water Temperature 15C, Clarity (Secchi disc) 1.7m.
Other areas are continuing to holdfish and best bags have been coming from International Bay, Lochend,
Malling shore and Sam’s Point – not necessarily the Cages! A lot
to report this week so will make the most of photos. Autumnal mixing
is taking place in the water column, circulating nutrients, and the
water is still green in places on the windward shores when the wind
is light – but the fishing has been excellent.
In the Stirling International
Angling Festival over £800 was raised for a help the heroes charity
event organized by Callum Fraser of Thornhill. Pictured right are top
rods in the competition; Andy Everett (left) from the Army and
Charlie Pride of the Scottish Police Force.

Winners of one of the oldest
fishing trophies in existence, The Glasgow and District Cup, were
Rainbow Warriors with this year’s team; Jock Cree (left) and Kenny
Miller. Eleven 2 man teams from balloted
clubs competed. The pair netted 17 trout (13 returned) for 37lbs.
Runners up were Rowbank A.C. with 13 trout for 32 lbs.
Crawford Comrie (above) from Crieff landed this 5lb 12oz
brownie from a Dog Isle drift with an intermediate line and a black
sedgehog. Octogenarian John Fleming (middle) took this 6 ½lb bow on
a red holo cormorant in Gateside Bay. In the first of the Scottish
Club Semi-finals, the Lake fished exceedingly well with 54 anglers
weighing in 106 fish for 252lbs and returning a further 351, giving a
rod average of 8.5 fish. Top rod on the day was International angler
Peter Auchterlonie with a probable major comp record of 31 fish.
Peter was fishing a midge tip with a booby on the point and a couple
of buzzers in International Bay. Peter’s Team Menteith Ospreys
finished in first place with Change B and North Berwick runners up.
