2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It was a cold start to the week at Forbes of Kingennie but buy the weekend the conditions had improved dramatically with light winds and warm weather bringing everything to life and the fishing was fantastic. The osprey has been in most days and on a few occasions there have been two birds in at once fishing over the ponds. The Bankside was very busy over the weekend with the Mr Simpsons group on Saturday, where 24 anglers landed 58 fish for a total weight of 140lb 9oz with the largest fish of the day taken by Mr Adams with an 11lb 7oz rainbow. On Sunday we hosted the semi- final of the SANA National Stillwater Championship. After a busy day on Saturday and 22 rods fishing the Sunday the fish were a bit shy but by the end there were 88 fish landed. First place was taken by Willie Riddocks with 8 fish, congratulations to all who qualified for the final in two weeks’ time. A number of methods have been taking fish but naturals seem to be the most consistent approach. The Boathouse has been slightly coloured over the last week with the heavy rain we had but it hasn’t affected the fishing as most rod are still taking their fish. Mr Watson took 9 fish on a home tied Yellow Dancer with the biggest around 5lb. Mr Bowler took 2 for 8lb 9oz and 7 put back on a Hot Head Damsel. The biggest fish of the week was taken by Mr Wilson with 6lb 1oz rainbow but there have been a couple of much larger fish lost. The Burnside continues to produce good numbers of fish with either Buzzers or Damsels on an intermediate being the chosen method however come the evening Dries have been the method when they come to the top. Robert Gibson continued his fine run of form landing 15 fish in 3 hours on a Sparkly Damsel. Mr Barr took 8 fish on dries in 2 hours on Sunday night after the rain cleared. The Woodside has been on spectacular form with some really impressive numbers of fish being taken over the weekend. Over the 2 days 67 anglers landed 135 fish for a total weight of 218lb. Mr Graves had a busy morning landing 10 fish for 15lb 8oz in just over an hour’s fishing all falling to popped up Powerbait which seemed to be the best bait by far.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The catch and release anglers did especially well last week with some great catches being recorded. Steve Rogers from Edinburgh led the pack with 20 on a Cat’s Whisker, Tommy Dickson, Dunbar, 17 on the CDC, Frank Renwick, Edinburgh, 15 on an Olive Stalking Bug and David Savage from Edinburgh caught 12 on Buzzers and Blobs. There was a 6 man team competition on Sunday with the 36 anglers taking 101 fish weighing 248lbs and the winners were Allandale Tarn.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) On the warmer days this week the fish have been just under the surface with plenty of fly life on the surface. The dries as well as a wide variety of the usual lures have been working well. On Sunday the Dumfries Arms FFC had a good day taking 21 fish for 46lbs 4oz with the winner being Josie Donis with 3 fish for 10lbs 4oz on a Blob. John Kilgannon from Stirling caught 2 for 5lbs on a Green Dancer, Andrew Connelly, Stirling, 2 fish for 6lbs 8oz on a Damsel, Martin Hudak, Alloa, 2 for 6lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Kenny Low, Auchterarder, 2 for 5lbs on Buzzers and Alec Stewart from Crieff used a Viva to take a brace weighing 6lbs. Bryon Martin from Clackmannan had 3 fish weighing 6lbs on a Black Bug, Douglas Stewart, Tullibody, 2 fish for 5 lbs on a Viva, Robert Kettles, Perth, 2 for 5lbs 8oz on Dries and Tommy Millar from Stirling caught 2 for 4lbs 8oz on a Dry Daddy. Jim Prentice from Tullibody used a Damsel to bag 4 fish for 11lbs.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Although the east wind is often cursed as making the fishing difficult, many of the fish this week were being caught downwind in any ripple that the breeze created. That said, the glorious day on Tuesday when there was next to no wind, also saw a good number of fish landed! The cooler weather seems to suit the Browns and Tigers and they are coming out really well. There are a lot more of these lovely fish just waiting to be stocked over the next two to three weeks, before the weather hopefully warms up a bit. In general the fish were in the top 3 feet of the water and being caught all-round the ponds. There were periods of excellent dry fly fishing when there were hatches of small black flies, but most of the time the usual selection of small lures, nymphs and wet flies were successful. In almost all cases, no matter the fly pattern, a reasonable fast retrieve was working best, and for Browns and Tigers the fly had to stay in the water right in to the edge of the pond.
Peter Bryce, Alloa, 5 for 18lb 4oz including 3 Blues, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 15lb 8oz including 3 Blues, Steven Mason and son, Jordan, Cumbernauld, shared 6 for 17lb including 5 Blues, Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 7 for 20lb 12oz including a Blue and a Brown and George Dobbie, Glasgow, 5 for 11lb 8oz including 3 Browns from Swanswater and a Tiger from the Meadow Pond. Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 13lb 4oz including Blue, Peter Henderson, Cumbernauld, 4 for 10lb 8oz including a Blue and 2 Browns, Steve Murphy, Motherwell, 3 Blues for 11lb, Derek Hutton, Edinburgh, 3 for 10lb including 2 Blues and Tom Brunton, Glasgow, 3 for 10lb including 2 Blues. Ian MacDonald, Alva, 3 for 10lb including a Brown, Jim Donnelly, Milton of Campsie, 3 for 9lb 4oz including 2 Blues, Ronnie Codona, Glasgow, 3 Blues for 8lb 6oz, Ian Henderson 3 for 9lb including Tiger, Angus Auchinachie, Falkirk, 2 for 7lb 4oz including 4lb 8oz Tiger and Kris Laird, Lochgilphead, 2 for 5lb 10oz including a Blue and 3lb overwintered Tiger. A Scott, Strathaven, had a great afternoon’s sport on catch and release, taking 12 on a dry black spider, Gary Dunsmore, Stenhousemuir, 3 caught and released including 2 Browns, one around 5lb 8oz.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The 1st Bannockburn AC had an outing on Sunday and although conditions were very tricky they managed 19 fish with K Burns doing well with 5 fish whilst fishing from a float tube. Mr Currie from Glasgow had 3 for 8lbs, Mr Bombridge, Glasgow, 2 for 9lbs and Mr Kingsley from Glasgow took 4 for 1lbs 4oz. Mr Ross from Bonnybridge had 5 for 11lbs 3oz, William Wright, Queenzieburn, had a brace weighing 8lbs 7oz with the best tipping the scales at 5lbs 5oz and John Shaw from Kilsyth took a tremendous brown trout of 13lbs on a dry fly.
