Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday13 January 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 12 January 2014.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2014

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) You would never believe its winter at Forbes of Kingennie. During the past week the water has cleared really well over the last couple of weeks and the amount of fish activity has been phenomenal. There have been some really good buzzer hatches for the time of year and this has seen a lot of fish falling to the natural approach, there has even been a handful of fish taken on dry flies. The Burnside really has been the pond to fish now that the water has cleared, over the course of the weekend there were 8 fished killed for 15lb, as well as 102 caught and released by a total of 14 rods fishing the pond. Mr Darren Phinn had a fantastic session releasing 24 fish including a rainbow estimated at over 6lb fishing lures on a sunken line. Mr Barlow has continued to show the catching potential of Buzzers at this time of year by landing 30 fish in 4 hours fishing over the weekend. The water in the Boathouse has become very clear and the fish have responded well to the improved clarity. They have been well spread around the pond falling to nearly any method. Young Logan Cumming continued to show his ability by landing a 5lb 15oz rainbow on a Hot Head Damsel. Mr Bell had 2 for 8lb and Mr Watson also had 2 for 8lb including a 5lb blue trout. The Bankside hasn't been quite as busy as the Burnside but it has still been producing some good bags of fish including some lovely blue trout. The Ferry Fly Dressers took 16 fish for 33lb for the seven rods that fished. Mr Marshall released 8 fish on Diawl Bachs and Mr Sherriff returned 7 on nymphs. The Woodside has seen nearly every rod that has fished leave with at least one fish however most people have bagged up no problem. Powerbait has taken most fish but the spinner has also been very good as the fish haven't been too far from the edges. Mr Hogan took his 4 fish for 6lb in 35 minutes on Powerbait. Mr Brown also did really well after moving to where he saw some fish splashing and went on to land 8 fish for 14lb.

 3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Last week saw some cracking fish being recorded with Barry Robertson from Mayfield leading the pack with a brace weighing 25lbs 8oz – best fish 13lbs on a Black & Silver Rabbit, Malcolm Proudlock, Durham, had 10 on Buzzers – best 10lbs but fish of the week went to young Heather Brown from Edinburgh who used an Orange Blob to bag a belter of 13lbs 2oz. Also doing well was Jocky Dyatt from Gorebridge with 11 on an Egg Fly, Gordon Bunce, Gorebridge, 12 on a Bloodworm, Gordon Sweeney, Durham, 6 on Buzzers and David Savage from Edinburgh took 4 on a Black & Green Rabbit.

4. MORTON (Livingston) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

5. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was week of mixed weather but when the sun has been shining the fishing has been very good. The fish have been getting caught from just under the surface to about 3 -4 feet - a bit higher up than they have been recently.   A wide variety of flies have been taking fish so there is no steady favourite.
Gerry Kane from Cumbernauld had a nice brace weighing 4lbs on a Jenny Dry off the top, Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, 3 for 8lbs on a Black Damsel, Kong, Crieff, 2 for 7lbs on a Black & Green Fritz and Mike Christie from Scone took 2 for 7lbs on Buzzers. Willie Docherty from Tillicoultry had a cracking brace for 9lbs 8oz – best fish 7lbs 8oz on a Damsel and Peter McGrath from Perth had a fine rainbow that tipped the scales to 4lbs 8oz on an Orange Fritz.

6. SWANSWATER (Stirling) It was a quiet week, angler-wise, at Swanswater but those who did venture out were rewarded with some excellent fishing.  Early in the week the fish were in the top few feet of the water and were seen moving and feeding on the surface, particularly in the mornings.   Towards the end of the week the wind turned colder and the fish went deeper.   In general those fishing deeper were doing better all week, although one young angler had a lot of success on the Millpond at the weekend fishing a Suspended Buzzer just under the surface.   Other successful patterns this week included Dancer, Damsel, Cat’s Whisker, PTN, Hare’s Ear, Montana and Bloodworm.   The ponds remained ice free despite the morning frosts and with the aerators in place there should be no danger of the water freezing over even if we do get a cold spell of weather.
Ian Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 for 15lb plus 5 caught and released, Peter O’Brien, Camelon, 5 for 14lb 8oz including 4 Blues and a Tiger and Stephen Mullin and young son, Liam, Pitlochry, 5 for 12lb including 4 Blues and a Tiger from the Meadow Pond. Nigel Muckle, Mid Calder, 4 for 13lb 8oz including 3 Blues, Jordan Duncan, Denny, 4 for 8lb from the Millpond plus 2 caught and returned, Eddie McKillop, Glasgow, 3 for 9lb 8oz including 2 Blues and a Tiger and Graeme Arthur, Stirling, 3 Blues for 8lb 8oz. Danny Doherty, Denny, 3 Blues for 8lb 4oz, Sandy Donald, Dunblane, 3 Blues for 8lb, John Relf, Falkirk, 3lb 10oz Blue and Darren Hill, Cambus, 11 caught and returned from the Meadow Pond.
