Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday, 09 December 2013. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 08 December 2103.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2014
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It has been a better week at Forbes of Kingennie, the slightly warmer weather has seen the fish a lot more active in all the ponds and the anglers have seen a big difference in the number of fish caught.
The Boathouse has stayed quite clear and nearly every angler has come off with their limit this week. As usual lures are the dominating method with Damsels being popular this week. Mr Simpson had a good day on Saturday landing 4 fish for 22lb 9oz. Mr McIntyre had the largest fish of the week with his personal best fish weighing 13lb 13oz on a small Olive Damsel. The Bankside has fished much better with the water not as stained as it was last week. Most of the fish seem to be sat in the bays out the way of the cold westerly winds. Black seems to be the most effective colour with Dancers, Fritzs and even Buzzers taking fish. Mr Barr did well returning 7 fish in 3 hours on a Black Hot Head Dancer with the largest weighing around 4lbs 8oz. Mr Marshall persevered on Friday fighting the cold weather to land 4 fish on small Black Buzzers. The Burnside has not been that busy but those who have fished have done well. Most methods have worked but again given the conditions white lures have been best. Mr Watson had 6 fish on a Cat Nomad after changing flies many times. Mr Bell did well returning 9 fish on Buzzers and Diawl Bachs. The Woodside has continued to produce fish even in the worst of conditions. Powerbait fished under the float really has been the winner with other methods not really producing anywhere near as many fish. Mr Finlayson had a great day after a few blank trips where he managed his five fish for 8lb 4oz as well as losing a few.
There are still pegs available for the end of year competition on the Burnside Pool on the 28th of December. The Boathouse is now fully booked but please call for any more information on the event. 01382 350777/350213
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The best fish last week was a belter of 15lbs taken on an Okey Dokey by David Smith from Dunbar and Tommy Dickson, also from Dunbar, had 8 fish on a Diawl Bach including one at 11lbs 8oz. Also doing on catch and release tickets were Alex Rowley from Dalkeith with 8 on a Rabbit, David Savage, Edinburgh, 4 on a Diawl Bach, Murphy Stevenson, Glasgow, 6 on a Blob and Mick Mulgrew from Danderhall took 9 on a Black & Green Buzzer.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) There were a few anglers out catching fish mainly down about 3 - 5 feet with a wide variety of flies and those included Mike Christie from Scone with 2 fish for 5lbs on Buzzers, Alistair Lennox, Cupar, 2 for 7lbs on the Ally McCoist, Jim Nesmith, Spittalfield, 4 for 11lbs 8oz on a Cat and John Patrick from Kilsyth took 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Lime Green Fritz. Stuart Clark from Kilsyth had 3 for 9lbs on a Lime Green Fritz, Robert Young, Kilsyth, 3 for 7lbs on a Black & Green Fritz and Bobby Robertson from Falkirk caught 3 for 8lbs on Blobs. David McCrae from Falkirk used a Pink Blob to take 3 fish weighing 8lbs and Ian Sloan from Almondbank had a brace weighing 5lbs on a Black Rabbit.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) It was a mixed week at Swanswater with some good days for fishing and some on which the fish were just not cooperating! The storm on Thursday kept everyone at home and coloured the water for the next day, but things soon cleared up and Saturday saw excellent conditions and great catch returns. The majority of fish being stocked at present are home-reared Blue trout and this is reflected in the returns with most anglers ending up with a bagful of Blues. For most of the week the fish were being hooked around 4 to 6 feet down with small lures – Dancer, Tadpole, Cat’s Whisker – and nymphs – Damsel, Buzzer, Bloodworm – being the most successful patterns. There are still a few places available for the annual charity competition on Friday December 27th. Please contact the Fishery for details.
Greg Hoggan, Stirling, 5lb 4oz Blue, Ian Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 Blues for 15lb, Stephen Long, Glasgow, 5 Blues for 13lb 8oz plus 6 fish returned and Jim Donnelly, Milton of Campsie, 4 Blues for 12lb plus 2 fish returned. James Cole, Muirhead, 4 Blues for 11lb 8oz, John Moyes, Bo’ness, 2 Blues for 6lb 10oz, Harry Haggarty, Glasgow, 2 Blues for 6lb 4oz and Dougie McLean caught and returned 9 on the Meadow Pond.
