Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday, 16 December 2013. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 15 December 2103.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2014

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It was another week of nice weather here at Forbes of Kingennie has seen some fantastic fishing on all the ponds. The Burnside has been the most popular pool this week with a lot of fish sitting quite high in the water. Floating lines or slow intermediates with a Cat’s Whisker type lure being the preferred method, but with the warmer temperatures there have been quite a few fish on the surface and if you can get the presentation right they have been very catchable right off the top. Mr Watson had his best days fishing ever returning 15 fish on a Cat Nomad including a fish estimated at around 4lbs 8oz. Mr Barlow continued to show everyone how effective Buzzers can be even in the winter after retuning 12 fish in around 3 hours. The Boathouse has seen a few rods this week but junior angler Logan Cumming put them all to shame on Saturday morning doing really well landing 3 fish for 12lb 5oz on a Hot Head Damsel as well as losing a really big fish under the platform when his leader snapped. Mr Woods took 2 fish for 13lb 2oz on a Black and Green Lure - the largest being the best of the week weighing 7lb 14oz. The Bankside has seen slightly less rods but there have been plenty caught but they do seem to be shoaled up and when you find them there's been some hectic action. There have been fish caught on naturals but light coloured lures such as Yellow Dancers and Cat’s whiskers have been the go to patterns. Mr Gordon returned 6 in 2 hours before the wind and rain arrived on Saturday morning. Mr Prior had 2 fish for 5lb 8oz and returned another 8. The Woodside is also fishing really well with a lot of the fish sat close to the margins and this has led to a lot of fish getting caught on spinners this week although Powerbait is still doing very well. Mr Brown had a brown trout of 2lb 12oz on a wee green lure and Mr Sheppard took 4 fish for 8lb 10z.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The catch and release anglers did well last week with Jockey Dyatt from Bonnyrigg leading the pack with a great return of 13 fish taken on either the Bloodworm or a Hare’s Ear. Also doing well was Joe Beattie from Edinburgh with 10 – best a 5lb blue trout on a Pink Apps, Alex Rowley, Dalkeith, 9 on a Greenwell Spider and Ian Callow from Dunbar with 6 on a Bloodworm. John Butler from Pathead took 5 on a Yellow Dancer and Gordon Bunch, Bonnyrigg, caught 9 on a Bloodworm.

4.  ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Last week, weather wise it was much milder with Tuesday being the best day - the depth has been varying again with a wide variety of flies of all colours taking fish.
John Gavin from Perth took 1fish weighing 7lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Andrew Brownlie, Grangemouth, 1 fish 6lbs 8oz on a  Black Rabbit, David Rutherford, Bo'ness, 2 fish for 6lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer and John Joiner from Errol used a Black Pennell to take a brace for 4lbs 8oz. Jim Prentice from Tullibody took 4 fish for 13lbs on a Green & White Fritz, Brian Harper, Alva, 3 fish for 8lbs on an Orange Fritz, Hamish Carmichael, Alloa 3 fish for 8lbs on a Coral Fritz and S. Godfrey from Scone caught 3 fish for 8lbs on an Orange Blob. Last but not least Ian Conn from Tillicoultry had 4 fish weighing 10lbs 12oz on a Yellow Blob.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Changeable weather and varying temperatures all week kept the fish active, and always on the move. Calmer, milder weather at the start of the week saw most of the fish taken in the channel from the island and also the area behind the islands, in particular at the roadside. As the wind got colder and stronger towards the end of the week the fish headed down wind with the dam wall and either side of the big tree being most productive. At the weekend the channel and the far bay were providing the best catches. The fish were generally being caught in the top 4 feet of the water. Various lures were doing best, but no one colour in particular was the favourite. Ace of Spades, Black and Green Fritz, Yellow Tadpole, Yellow Dancer, Hot Head Damsel and Cat were some of the best patterns, with some anglers still taking fish on Hares Ear, PTN and Buzzers.
Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 5 for 13lb 3oz including 4 Blues, Willie martin, Stirling, 5 Blues for 12lb 8oz, Danny Doherty, 4 for 14lb 8oz including 3 Blues and a 5lb 14oz Tiger, James Cole, Muirhead, 4 for 12lb 4oz and Stuart Nicholson, Knightswood, 4 Blues for 11lb 8oz. Adam Wywial, Grangemouth, 3 from the Millpond for8lb 12oz including 2 Blues and a 4lb Tiger, Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 2 Blues for 6lb 12oz, Bob Erskine, Kincardine, 2 from the Meadow pond for 6lb including a 4lb Tiger and Barry Hamilton, Motherwell, 5lb Rainbow. Dougie McLean, Cumbernauld, 9 caught and released, Robert Kelly, Kippen, 8 caught and released and Marcus Tripney, Grangemouth, 6 caught and released.
