3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The recent rain has maintained water-levels at optimum condition and water clarity is generally good, especially on the Bankside Pool which is gin clear. Congratulations to Chris Skivington who enjoyed a red- letter day on the Boathouse Pool releasing an incredible 58 fish on a catch/release permit. Mr. Findlay also had a decent day’s sport returning a dozen fish in a fairly short session. Chris Watson fished a short mid-morning session to return four fish including a fine Rainbow estimated at 10lbs+. On the Burnside Pool Grant Burnett found the correct method, fishing dry fly patterns to return 16 fish. Mr. Johnstone and James Smith released 12 fish each, whilst Mr. Rayburn returned 10 fish. Two visitors who stayed in the lodges (Mr. Bruce and Mr. Syme) returned 28 fish between them caught on a variety of flies and patterns. Last Saturday seven anglers released 52 fish taken mainly on a mixture of Dries and Buzzers. On the big fish side of things Ian Barlow released a magnificent rainbow estimated at 15lbs; Mr. Abernethy returned three superb rainbows with two of them being around 13lbs each and the third estimated at 8lbs and Mr. Bowman also released a fine rainbow estimated at 11lbs. The Muirs landed three fish each for totals of 11lbs and 7lbs and Charles Lafferty took four rainbows for a total of 9lbs 8oz. Top rod on the Bankside Pool was Andy Rutherford who tried various options from dries to lures, releasing 18 fish. Ian Barlow returned 9 and Tac returned three fish, one of which was a fine rainbow estimated at 11lbs. Young Jake Gilchrist returned several fish from all three fly-only pools but by far the biggest was a magnificent rainbow estimated at 14lbs+ from the Bankside, caught on a black/red Shuttlecock. Powerbait fished beneath a float has again been the favoured method on the Woodside Pool (any legal method). On Sunday 32 fish were taken for a combined weight of 67lbs 8oz and on Monday six anglers took 22 fish for a total of 42lbs 4oz.
This past week of hot weather here at Forbes of Kingennie is seeing a change in the fishes behaviour, as the water temperatures rise they have been a bit fussy at times but when the cloud comes over and cools down the sport at times has been outstanding. Different ponds have been fishing better at different times so moving around has been essential for constant results.
The Bankside pool has been the stand out pond these last few days with lots of anglers having great returns in sometimes trick conditions. The water has become very clear recently and really helped with the returns. Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at 5 feet. The washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when they have been very active. Mr Kirk had 12 fish and 13 fish in 2 consecutive trips on fabs, buzzers and diawls bachs. His best fish was estimated at around 12lb as well as others of 5 and 7lb. Mr Jones had 12 on black buzzers under and indicator. Mr Birse had 13 on a sugar cube shipman’s.
The Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible on the surface cruising around. The fishing has been a little bit slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. Again the more natural approach has taken more fish, The washing line with wee buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right conditions when they come up. Mr Westland had 21 on size 14 black buzzers and fabs. Mr Wilson had 2 for 6lb and put back 9 fishing diawl bachs.
The Boathouse has been a bit coloured but on the very sunny days it has been the best pond with huge amounts of fish taking off the surface in the shade. Mr Leslie had a great day returning around 20 fish on small dries and emerges. Mr Fulthorpe had a good morning landing 8 up to 7lb on a pink fab and diawl bachs. Mr Whiteford kept his 3 fish for 8lb and put back 6 on a damsel.
The Woodside pool has been really busy in the nice weather with many full bags being recorded. Green powerbait and spinners have been the top bait of late. Over the weekend there was a total of 37 anglers landed 68 fish for weight of 115lb.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) John McCallum from Edinburgh had a 5lb fish on a dry, John Daly (Edinburgh) 4 on lures, Drew Finlayson (Edinburgh) 2 for 6lbs 8oz on Buzzers and Joe Beattie from Edinburgh used Buzzers to take 6. John Thomson from East Linton had 4 on an Egg; Ken Morrison (Edinburgh) 4 on a Blob and Derek DeMarco from Haddington had 3 on Dries.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The biggest gold trout of the year to date, 7lb 12oz, was landed this week creating a personal best for angler Robert Watt. This lovely fish was caught on a size 14 Kate McLaren from the boat. With water temperature sitting around 11o-12oC, the fish were high up in the water and were feeding in the margins although the boats were also getting plenty of fish. The water clarity is excellent again after the midweek rain and fish are being seen cruising round the ponds. Some cracking Browns and Tigers are being caught just now, along with Golds, Blues and Rainbows with many in the 4lb to 5lb range. Some days anglers were reporting loads of offers and takes which did not necessarily translate into catches. The usual selection of lures was working this week especially with a fast retrieve. Buzzers, wets and a few dry flies, including Hopper and Yellow Owl, were also successful. This week’s catches included Robert Watt, Glasgow, 7lb 12oz Gold, Ian Ramsay, Edinburgh, 5 for 19lb 4oz including 3 Golds, biggest at 6lb 8oz, Willie Martin, Stirling, 4 for 14lb 8oz including 4lb 8oz Brown and a Blue, Aaron Kirkwood, Cowie, 4 for 14lb 8oz including 3 Golds biggest at 4lb 8oz and Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, in two visits, 5 for 16lb. Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 15lb 4oz, Gerry Cargill, Glasgow, 5 for 15lb including 2 Blues and a Gold, plus 3 C&R, Alan Armstrong, Dollar, 3 for 11lb including 4lb 8oz Rainbow, Steven Wallace, 3 for 10lb 6oz and Andy Duffin, Cowie, 3 for 10lb, plus 5 C&R including a Brown. Alan Mathewman, Motherwell, 3 for 8lb 12oz, Tom Hemmings, Motherwell, 3 for 8lb 12oz, Willie McFadyen, Cowie, 3 for 8lb 8oz, Henry Fulton, Greenock, 2 for 7lb 4oz including 4lb Rainbow, John Sneddon, Falkirk, 2 for 6lb 12oz including a Blue, plus 2 C&R, Brian McPeake, Gargunnock, 2 for 6lb 12oz including a Gold and Peter Baigan, 2 for 6lb 10oz. Jordan Duncan caught and released 4.
It was a quiet week for bait fishers. Amongst those catching was Agris Kalns 3 for 9lb 10oz including 2 Blues, bigger one at 4lb 8oz, Ross Martin 4 for 9lb, Monta Kalns, 3 for 7lb and Iain Fern 2lb 8oz Rainbow.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The fishery is performing really well at the moment with lots of double figure rainbows and big browns being caught along with some very big blues which is rather uncommon. Right now Dries are really doing well with the Olive CDC probably the favourite but lots of fish are also being taken on Black Hopper Poppers and watching the fish, with massive bow waves taking these flies is awesome.
