Lake of Menteith 31st July

6ft Water Temperature 15C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.75m.

Big increase in clarity in the last few days and maybe
the fish are lying a little deeper as a consequence –
although surface or near surface tactics are proving
successful. Yesterday the anglers reported “no surface
activity at all” and that lures were working best. I was
beginning to think the size of the stockies these days
might be switching them to a piscivorous rather than
insectivorous diet. The evening shift quickly
disproved this theory as there was loads of fish
moving and the best tactic appeared to be buzzers.
Top areas; all over but maybe with an emphasis on the
Northern and Western shores. The Gap and Gateside
Bay have fished well. The fish are a exceptionally
large currently (averaging 3lbs) – so make the most of
it!

McGinlay junior of Glasgow on his first trip to the
Lake. Nice to see you at last and I’m sorry I was on

holiday!

Scottish Club Championships. Report by Kenny Miller. Sponsors Grouse Whisky and Angling

Active. Saturday night saw the last 17 teams competing. Previous winners Change "B" and Thack were in the line
up. Gateside Bay, Sams Point through Reedy Bay and into Hotel Bay and Malling Shore were likely hot spots. 51
anglers caught 97 fish were caught for a total of 251lb 6oz, 32 trout of this number were returned.
Going to the semi finals on 21st September were; 1st place went to Thack with 11 trout for 27lb 11oz. 2nd place
were East Kilbride with 10 trout for 25lb 5oz. 3rd place were Change"B" with 10 fish for 23lb 14oz. 4th place
were Raemoir Trout with 9 trout for 23lb 5oz. Top 5 individuals and qualifying for the Champion of Champions
on 12th October; 1st Jimmy McBride "Change B" 7 trout 15lb 9oz, 2nd Walter Archibald Dalzell 6 trout for
14lb 4oz, 3rd Jim McKinlay East Kilbride with 5 trout for 13lb 4oz, 4th John Miller Thack with 5 trout for
12lb 13oz and 5th Angus Armour Loanhead & Dist with 5 trout for 12lb 5oz. Chris McAllister of Raemoir
Trout, recent winner of Troutmaster Final at Grafham Water, had heaviest fish of night with rainbow of 5lb 2oz.

Baynes (Callander) Boat
League. After a hot day the fish became

lethargic with the 17 anglers catching 40
trout. Best bag was one of this year’s new
entrants, Sandy Boag, with 6 fish. Sandy
caught his fish in Cage bay and near Dog
Island on dries. His boat partner George
Whyte is still leading with only 3 nights to
go.The sheet http://www.menteith-fisheries.co.uk/
has
been adjusted for the best nine nights and
for being out on own.

Left: Discarded Roach. A nice big roach –
hauled out and left on the fish pen
walkways. The British record is 4lb 4oz.

Notable Catches

Dave Coleman of Bridge of Weir had six on buzzers on a quiet Monday night – and kept a couple including this 4
½ lb blue.

Central Scotland Police 4 boats 10 fish for 36lbs 12oz and 14 returned. Phil Hunter of Airdrie 9 fish for 26lbs,
Scottish Interforce 14 boats 112 trout 326lbs and 30 rtd. Largs 4 boats 14 fish 38lbs and 3rtd, Gartmore 6 boats 14
trout 41lbs, Saturday AC 4 boats 20 trout 61lbs and 10rtd, Buchan and Lewis (Glasgow) 10 fish 32lbs.

I recently celebrated my half
century with a trip to Austria and
a family cycle down the Danube
where I saw a Burbot (the only
freshwater member of the cod
family) being landed. The fish had
taken the bait deep and was
plainly dead as it lay upside down
in the water but could not be taken
as it was just less than the 40cm
minimum take size.

“Think I’ll Chap this ‘un”
I was most impressed with Vienna
and the remnants of the Austro-
Hungarian Empire …… Wasn’t
quite sure what was going on in
this alluring fishy scene from the
entrance to the Hapsburg Royal
Palace but certainly a notable
catch – didn’t get the boy’s name.
