Lake of Menteith 28th Aug
6ft Water Temperature 17C, Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.6m (on 27th).
In the last 24hrs heavy rain has raised the loch by about 9 inches and may well have affected clarity which
was the day before a clear 2.6m. Some great catches recently as the photos below show. This topper captured
(and released) by Craig Cowan of Fife based Hedgehogs AC was (Craig later thought and I agree) perhaps
underestimated at 9lbs. It might explain the reported sighting of a basking shark in the Lake. It was caught in
Gateside on a midge tip and diawl bach on the 18th August. The Lake has (as usual!) been fishing well with top
areas generally being Gateside, Stable Point, Malling shore and Lochend – although immediately after a stocking
you can pick fish up just about anywhere. Top tactics have been various. Peter Batchelor did well on his dry fly
pattern the Claret F-wing, which he says works equally well when submerged. Otherwise the sink tip line remains
the angler’s first choice line patterns reported to be doing well in conjunction with it were pink booby yellow eyes,
candy booby, diawls, buzzers and crunchers. Paul O’Neill did well on his “Cataract Booby”. The heather fly may
appear anytime now if conditions permit.
We are now phasing in fish from the cages which are about 1.9lbs average weight as well as continuing to stock
the larger (2-4lb) fish from the ponds. This means there is a now a greater size variation in the Lake than there has
been for a month or two and will make forthcoming competitions all the more interesting!
July Stats: The average weight of fish for the month was 3lbs and the average 2 man boat catch including
released fish was 5.7 fish for 16.9lbs. The percent of fish recorded as released was 41%.
Mike Forbes of of Helensburgh AC with a 5lb fish from the Rookery reeds caught on a dry daddy.
