Lake of Menteith fishing report

Lake of Menteith 22nd May
6ft Water Temperature 14C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 1.85m.
6ft Water temperature has come up 2 degrees in a day and finally we are approaching something like a seasonal
water temperature. However the variety of our weather is astonishing – it was on the 23rd May last year that we
had a severe gale which felled so many trees. Just how this affects the fishing is anybody’s guess, however it is
likely to initiate large scale buzzer hatches all round the water – not just in the shallow and warmer regions of
Tods Hole and the Butts. The Lake extends a warm welcome to all competitors in the Ladies Home International
Event which takes place on the 24thMay. I believe the ladies require a few more boatman for this match. Please get
in touch if you fancy a day out in glorious weather!
In the Scottish Police National on the 17th, David Mateer (left) of
Northern Constabulary was top rod with 15 fish, 5 ahead of his nearest
rival. David got most of his fish in Gateside Bay. The 70 competitors
caught 267 fish for 631lbs (incl. returned fish – number returned awaited).
Colin Riach’s photo (above
middle) shows the type of dry that
worked for him and Jimmy last
Wednesday, but noted that the
fish in the Butts were particularly
fussy!
In the Scottish Club
Championships, sponsored by
GROUSE Whisky and
ANGLING ACTIVE, 48
anglers caught 118 fish for
254lbs, 57 of these were returned.
Top team were Clan Chiefs (red
jackets) L to R Ronnie Mather, Marcus SmithMather. These with 23
top was Ronnie and Pete Moir,
two wer
nd
nd from left), 2
fishing
dries. Also qualifying were John Kelly, Pete Moir, Gary
Mackay. Heaviest fish (3lb 8oz) was caught by Kenny
McClymont (above left) of Adrossan Eglington. The
competition is fished to a 2 fish kill then catch and release.
Another great turn out for the Scottish Club
Championships with over 290 teams entering the
competition in 2012. Well done Kenny Millar and
Committee!
Friends of Tom Neil (pictured
left on left with Hugh Lusk on
right – in 2008) remarked that
the local fish populations could
rest a little easier with the
passing away of Tom last Friday
night. Tom who fished with
Kelvinside AC, will be sadly
missed on the angling scene. He
was 91. Funeral arrangements
are tbc but I was told it would
be on Friday in Renton.
In the second Heat of the BAYNES TACKLE (Callander) Boat League, George Whyte from Crieff netted
16 fish in the Butts using a 3ft midge tip and a fast and even figure of eight retrieve. He was fishing a cat booby on
the point and buzzers. In second place was Mark Steven with 12 and Ronnie Robb with 11. Winners of the Heat
receive a £25 Bayne’s Voucher and a free breakfast in Callander’s Taste of the Trossach’s Restaurant. After two
heats, George currently lies in first position with James Fairlie second.
Lovely Critters
My friends in the aquaculture feed
industry tell me that recent trials
have conclusively proven that it is
now possible, as a result of
technological developments in
feed processing, to make salmon
(and trout) feed from totally fish
free ingredients and achieve
similar growth, digestibility and
food conversion to diets
containing marine ingredients.
This could decrease the
competition for the fish in the sea
and make this group of Puffins
(pictured on a sail to the
Treshnish Isles last weekend) and
our migratory fish, a little happier.
Please where possible can you use/recycle your own clean plastic bags to keep your fish in – as oor bag bill is
getting large. Used cloth bass bags are not allowed at the fishery.
