Because there is so much natural feeding in the water right now the fish are being attracted by bright colours so flies and lures incorporating bright green, red, yellow and orange are all doing well. 3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) There have been some good catches recorded on the Boathouse Pool this week. Chris Skivington returned 17 fish whilst Messrs. Nicoll and Deveney released 16 fish each. With good water clarity it has been mainly Buzzers and Dries which have scored best.
On the Burnside Pool Alan Thomson enjoyed a couple of excellent afternoon sessions returning 10 fish including a magnificent rainbow weighing 13lbs 8ozs and another at 11lbs. Jock Leslie also had a couple of productive sessions releasing 21 fish including a stunning rainbow of 16lbs. Mr. Carlyle released 10 fish and Ian Barlow returned 6 including another beautifully conditioned rainbow of 13lbs. Most were taken on various dry fly patterns like the Sugar Cubed Shipman, Yellow Owl, small Sedges and Olive and Red/Black Buzzers.
The Bankside Pool has been slightly moody but some excellent catches have still been made. Kinross AC members returned 35 fish on Saturday, with the best being a superb rainbow weighing 14lbs 6ozs.
Powerbait fished beneath a float and spinning have produced the best results in the Woodside Pool (any legal method). On Friday 20 fish were taken for a combined weight of 48lbs and on Saturday 20 fish were caught for a total of 37lbs 4oz.
This past week of hot weather here at Forbes of Kingennie is seeing a change in the fishes behaviour, as the water temperatures rise they have been a bit fussy at times but when the cloud comes over and cools down the sport at times has been outstanding. Different ponds have been fishing better at different times so moving around has been essential for constant results.
The Bankside pool has been the stand out pond these last few days with lots of anglers having great returns in sometimes trick conditions. The water has become very clear recently and really helped with the returns. Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at 5 feet. The washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when they have been very active. Mr Kirk had 12 fish and 13 fish in 2 consecutive trips on fabs, buzzers and diawls bachs. His best fish was estimated at around 12lb as well as others of 5 and 7lb. Mr Jones had 12 on black buzzers under and indicator. Mr Birse had 13 on a sugar cube shipman’s.
The Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible on the surface cruising around. The fishing has been a little bit slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. Again the more natural approach has taken more fish, The washing line with wee buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right conditions when they come up. Mr Westland had 21 on size 14 black buzzers and fabs. Mr Wilson had 2 for 6lb and put back 9 fishing diawl bachs.
The Boathouse has been a bit coloured but on the very sunny days it has been the best pond with huge amounts of fish taking off the surface in the shade. Mr Leslie had a great day returning around 20 fish on small dries and emerges. Mr Fulthorpe had a good morning landing 8 up to 7lb on a pink fab and diawl bachs. Mr Whiteford kept his 3 fish for 8lb and put back 6 on a damsel.
The Woodside pool has been really busy in the nice weather with many full bags being recorded. Green powerbait and spinners have been the top bait of late. Over the weekend there was a total of 37 anglers landed 68 fish for weight of 115lb.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) With the weather cooling down the fishing has picked up and some good catches have been recorded including A Jones from Edinburgh who had 2 for 8lbs on a PTN, A Scott (Edinburgh) 2 for 8lbs on a Fab and George Horne from Edinburgh used a Yellow Dancer to bag 2 for 8lbs 8oz. George Liddle from Dunbar had 2 for 5lbs on a Nomad, Frank McBain (Edinburgh) 2 for 5lbs on a PTN and on the catch and release front A Scott (Edinburgh) had 6 on Buzzers and Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 6 on a lure.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) As the water continues to cool down, some of the bigger fish are beginning to reappear. The Browns and Tigers are also becoming much more active and many are figuring in the catch returns. The water clarity remains excellent although it did colour a little on Tuesday after the heavy rain on Monday. On most days the fish were to be found higher in the water as the day went on and were taking a selection of dry flies with Yellow Owl being the most successful pattern. Wet flies including Black Pennell and Spider were also working well as were nymphs such as Montana, Hare’s Ear, Damsel and Diawl Bach. The usual lures – Dancer, Cat’s Whisker and Ally McCoist – were also taking fish. On the bait pond Maggots and Red Power Bait took the majority of fish. The Fishery is now open Monday to Wednesday 8.00am to 6.00pm, Thursday to Sunday 8.00am to 7.30pm
Amongst those doing well on the fly was Billy Muir, Penicuik, 3 for 15lb including 6lb 2oz Blue, Davy Quinn, Dunfermline, 3 for 11lb 4oz including 5lb Gold, Stuart McKay, Bonnybridge, 6lb 10oz Tiger, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 14lb 8oz including 2 Golds and a Blue and John Mooney, Queenzieburn, 5 for 13lb including 4 Golds.
