Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 11 December 2017. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 10 December 2017.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles). NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2018

2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) At the time of writing this report (Tuesday) most of the ponds are iced over with just a few areas available for fishing. Whilst this very cold spell continues it would be advisable to phone and check on conditions prior to visiting. Angling numbers were down this week, with the weather and Christmas shopping being the main factors.
The Boathouse was the most consistent pool this week with fish being taken on dries, buzzers and small lures. Mr. Grey returned 15 fish; Ian Barlow returned 12 and Mr. Burnett released 11. On the Burnside Pool the majority of fish caught were still well up in the water, again falling to anything from dry fly patterns through to lures. Ian Barlow led the way releasing 20 fish taken on a variety of flies and methods. Ken Jones also did well returning 7 fish in a short afternoon session. The Bankside Pool is continuing to show better returns, although it can be difficult to fish in windy conditions as it is quite open to the elements. Jock Leslie certainly cracked the code, returning 11 fish on dries and Nick Soave took five rainbows for a combined total of 11lbs 8oz. Black and green lures were also high on the agenda. The two best options on the Woodside Pool (any legal method) were Powerbait fished beneath a float or fly-fished lures (mainly dark colours). Messrs. Campbell and Brown shared a catch of four fish for 10lbs 8oz and the Fitzpatrick party had a similar return.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The extreme cold overnight on Saturday almost beat the aerators, but there was still a bit of clear water and the few anglers who braved the cold on Sunday were well rewarded.   Storm Caroline did not really impact on the Fishery, although the forecast of storm force winds certainly deterred the fishermen.   Early in the week the fish were around 4 feet down and to be found either at the dam, in the channel in front of the island, or around the bridge area.   After Wednesday night’s storm, the water temperature rose to 6oC but the fish went very deep.   The return to cold conditions at the weekend saw them back around the 4 foot mark.   The aerators are still on and there should continue to be some fishable platforms during this cold spell.   The Fishery hopes to remain open unless temperatures go even lower, but the forecast appears to be for a rise in temperatures so fingers crossed that the aerators will help to dispel the ice and things can get back to normal.
Amongst those venturing out this week and catching fish were Andy Rutherford, Dundee, 4 for 12lb 4oz including 3 Golds and a Blue, plus 5 Browns C&R, Callum Cochrane, Dundee, 4 for 10lb including 2 Blues, plus 4 Browns, one estimated at 7lb, C&R, Billy Weir, Bannockburn, 3 for 12lb including 2 Golds and a Blue, plus 9 C&R including 3 Browns and Alan Weir, Plean, 3 for 10lb including a Gold, plus 6 C&R. Alec Knox, Glasgow, 3 for 11lb 8oz including a Gold, Willie Martin, Stirling, 4 for 10lb 4oz including a Blue and 2 from the Meadow Pond, Marius Botezatu, Stirling, 4 from the Meadow Pond for 8lb and Paul Dancer, Glasgow, 3 for 7lb including a Blue. John Pearson, Bannockburn, 3 from the Meadow Pond for 7lb including a Gold, Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 2 from the Millpond for 4lb including a Gold, Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, 5lb Rainbow and David Lyon, Falkirk, caught and released 7 including 3 Browns and lost a Rainbow estimated between 7lb and 8lb just at the net. Tom Clark, Stirling, caught and released 6.

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
