The top catching flies and lures included the Sedge Muddler, Sedgehog, Kate McLaren, Foam Backed Daddy Longlegs., Bibio Hopper and the Coral Dancer. The best fishing areas have proved to be the Dogleg, Dam Wall and the North Shore.
2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It has been another very mixed week weather wise with not so many anglers about but those who braved the heavy rain were not disappointed. Mike Noble from Fife had a brace for 5lbs 8oz on a Blackestone Buzzer, Dave Brown, Stirling, 1 fish for 7lbs 8oz on a Dry Daddy, E Davidson, Perth, 4 fish for 10lbs on a Diawl Bach and John Wright from Stirling used a Rainbow Warrior to get 3 for 9lbs 12oz. B Robertson from Cowie had 3 fish for 9lbs 4oz on a Black and Gold Fritz, Harry Graham, Glenrothes, 2 fish for 6 lbs on Dries and Bill Parnell from Perth took 1 fish for 6lbs 4oz on a Black Lure.
3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Changing weather patterns were again the order of the week. The more productive conditions combined a gentle westerly breeze with fairly overcast skies – whilst any easterly wind had a somewhat detrimental effect on the fishing. There is a substantial amount of natural food in the water at present, resulting in good numbers of fish cruising happily on the surface but not necessarily in any mood to chase a fly. Others are sulking somewhat as the water temperature is still on the high side for trout.
On the Boathouse Pool Jock Leslie made the most of surface activity landing nine rainbows on dries. Mr. Tidcombe took four fish for a total weight of 10lbs 8oz. Catch and release numbers were steady on the Burnside. Messrs. Roy and Nugent returned 13 fish each; George Birse returned 12; Mr. Wales 11, Mr. McCabe 10 and Alan Gray returned 6 with one estimated at 10lbs. A variety of patterns succeeded including Floating Fry, Black Beetle, emerger patterns and Hot Head Damsels. Angling numbers were generally lower on the Bankside Pool but some decent fish up to around 5lbs were returned. Lar Findlay took top spot returning five fish in a short session, with the Zonker being particularly useful. The Fotheringhams took four fish for 10lbs 8oz and Messrs. Short and Kinney shared four fish for 9lbs 8oz. On the any legal method Woodside Pool there were excellent results to float-fished Powerbait. On Monday seven anglers took 27 fish for a combined weight of 52lbs. This was followed on Saturday by eleven anglers taking 29 fish for a total of 64lbs.The coarse pool, Blawearie Basin is producing good numbers of small roach and perch and is ideal as a starter pool for youngsters or beginners.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a very quiet week due to the appalling weather but that didn’t stop John Daly from Tranent catching and releasing 8 on a Black & Green Rabbit. Also featuring in the catch book was Kenny Morrison from Edinburgh with 4 on a Black Spider, Mike Blackwood, Gala, 4 on Buzzers, D Bowland, Gala, 5 on a Yellow Buzzer and Mick Mulgrew from Danderhall had 2 on a CDC. Ron Thom from Haddington had 3 on a Diawl Bach, Jimmy Watters, Dalkeith, 3 on Buzzers and Jimmy Anderson from Portobello had 4 on a Bloodworm.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) A drop in water temperature at this time of year always switches the fish on and that is what happened to a certain extent this week leading to improved fishing, although there were still spells when the fish proved hard to tempt. Water temperature is now sitting at 13oC and water clarity remains very good. The fish are generally in the top 2 feet of the water with a large number of big Browns being seen cruising and clearing the water, especially in the far bay. Most fish were taken on wet flies or nymphs with a reasonably fast retrieve working best. Most anglers favoured floating or midge tip lines, although a few were having success fishing lures on an intermediate line. Once again, the Golds were good indicators as to what speed of retrieve was needed or whether it was time to change the fly and try something different. Favourite patterns included Cormorant, Diawl Bach, Buzzer, Damsel, Bibio, Kate McLaren, Spider and Black Pennell
Kevin Aird, Kincardine, in two visits, 4 for 16lb 10oz, including 7lb 10oz Rainbow and a Gold, plus 2 C&R, Danny Doherty, Denny, 4 for 15lb 3oz including 7lb 3oz Rainbow, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 3 for 13lb 8oz including 6lb 8oz Rainbow and Billy Weir, Bannockburn, 4 for 11lb including a Blue. Alan Whitton, Stirling, 4 for 11lb, Barry Hamilton, Muirhead, 4 for 10lb 8oz including 2 Golds, Gary Waugh, Cumbernauld, 4 for 10lb 4oz, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 3 for 8lb 8oz and Mike Bolton, Stirling, 3 for 8lb 8oz.
