Fishing report from the Lake of Menteith

Lake of Menteith
Lake Blog 17/05/17
Secchi disk Clarity 2.9m ; Water Temperature at 6ft 14C.
Some phenominal Buzzer fishing over the past wee while and some amazing totals (see national result and Boat League Result) – particularly in the Eastern Basin from the Butts to Lochend – with the biggest fish congregations being found at Lochend and Kate’s Brae. Also good numbers of fish to be found in the Rookery Area. A note for competition anglers re the Fario Bung is that the eye may need turned down a little to comply with current size limits in some comps. Snatchers and lures have also been working well. Last night reports were of an amazing rise on the Tuesday Evening but the fish were very tricky.
In the second heat of the Scottish Club Championship 12 teams, 36 anglers in all, landed 133 trout. Top team were Roscobie (Ron Gray, George gall and Scott MacGregor) with 28 fish, 2nd top were Scottish Police Recreation Association East with 19 fish and 3rd were Future AC with 19 fish. Top 3 anglers were Jimmy McBride, George Gall, Ron Gray, and Calum Stephen. Best tactic buzzers, snatchers or lures at Lochend. For more detail visit http://www.sanacc.org.uk/2017-scottish-club-championship.html. In Heat 6 of the National Trout Fly Fishing Championship 57 anglers landed 160 trout for 382lbs and returned a further 358 fish giving a rod average of 9 fish. Top rod on the day was Derek Hesset of Gateside FF with 21 fish on buzzers and a bung at Lochend. Second was his clubmate Greg McLaren with 20 in the same areas using the same method.Third was Stuart Marklow (2015 champion) with 19 fish – on buzzers and a fab.
The Boat League sponsored by Baynes Tackle and Southside Decorators was won by Les Grant with 16 fish at Arnmach Point/Sandy Bay – for a change on yellow dancers, cormorants and a sink tip. Not bad for 4hrs.
