Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 26 December 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 25 December
2016.
1. FRANDY (Glendevon). The fishery is now closed for the 2016 season.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather has certainly been seasonal, with four seasons in a day at some stage. Strong winds and driving snow/rain made conditions extremely difficult at times but calmer conditions also occurred and some good catches have been returned. The Boathouse Pool has probably fished better than the rest with S. Japp returning a superb brownie estimated at 5lbs 8oz and Bruce Thomson returned ten fish including another superb brownie estimated at 7lbs. Diawl Bachs were the order of the day for M. Robertson who also returned ten fish including one estimated at 6lbs (together with five fish from the Burnside Pool). Chris Watson enjoyed a productive session on the Burnside Pool landing and returning eleven fish including two excellent rainbows estimated at 9lbs and 7lbs. The occasional fish has been taken on the dry fly indicating that all methods are worth using throughout the year as conditions change.
The Bankside Pool has had its moments with J. Lindley returning seven fish including a couple around the 4lbs mark – taken mainly on small black/green lures. T. Sheringham returned six fish with the best again around 4lbs; these fell mainly to damsel patterns. The Woodside Pool has been somewhat quieter this week. The Sangsters had four fish for a total of 9lbs and the Hillsdens took four for 7lbs 8oz. If weather conditions allow, the fishery will be open all week except for New Year’s Day. The staff at Kingennie takes this opportunity to thank all who have fished here during the year (especially our regular customers) and wish you a very special New Year and looking forward to seeing you all in 2017.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a quiet week due to the holidays and some very changeable weather but those who fished had good sport. Mick Mulgrew from Danderhall had 3 on Bloodworm, e Robertson, Edinburgh, 5 on the Shammy Worm, Tom Russell, Earlston, 9 on Buzzers and Ken Morrison from Edinburgh used a Pink Bug to catch 6. R Thom from Haddington had 5 on Buzzers, T Dickson, Dunbar, 7 on a Diawl Bach, Neil Raeburn, Edinburgh, 3 on Buzzers and the Boxing Day Competition, despite horrendous weather conditions, attracted 30 anglers who caught 51 trout for 128lbs with the winner being George Charters from West Linton with 6 fish for 15lbs 8oz.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The fish have been getting caught from just under the surface to about 2 - 3 feet down on the reasonable days but some days were just too wild to go out in. M Brice from Edinburgh had 3 fish weighing 14lbs – best 8lbs on a Buzzer, D. Gribble, Edinburgh, 4 for 15lbs 8oz on a Black Lure, T Wight,Edinburgh, 4 for 13lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach and Laurie Rumgay from Perth used a Squirmy to catch 3 for 9lbs. G. Wilson from Edinburgh took 3 for 9lbs on Buzzers, Dougie Allan, Callander, 2 for 8lbs 8oz on a Kate McLaren, Robert Kettles, Perth, 2 for 8lbs on a Cat and Ivor Campbell from Aberfoyle managed 3 for 12lbs on an Ally.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week started off calm and cold before Storm Barbara disrupted the fishing in the days running up to Christmas. Monday and Tuesday (19th & 20th) saw excellent conditions and plenty fish caught. The fish, at that point, were generally 2 to 3 feet down in the big pond and only about 1 foot down in the small ponds with plenty of Golds still being targeted.
The break in fishing caused by the stormy weather and the two days closure for Christmas resulted in a tremendous start to the Charity Competition held on Tuesday 27th. The winner, Stephen Cassells, from Fife, landed his first five fish in 15 minutes on the front of the island. Stevie has attended all but one of the annual Charity Competitions over the last 18 years, but this was his first win. Runner up was Andy Hunter and Ryan Britton took third place. Their prizes were tackle vouchers to the value of £50, £30 and £20. A total of 69 fish were caught in the competition, including two estimated to be over 10lb, plus numerous fish lost, much to the frustration of certain competitors. A donation of £1100 will be made to Strathcarron Hospice from the proceeds of the competition and the raffle drawn after it, plus money donated over the course of the year for tea and coffee at the Fishery.
Thanks go to all those who took part in the competition and donated prizes to and bought tickets for the raffle. Special mention goes to Scott Mason of Stirling Council Fisheries, for donating two very well received raffle prizes of a day for two on the Teith on opening day. Thanks also to Angling Active, Stirling, for help with competition prizes.
John Moyes, Grangemouth, 9 lb Rainbow, Ian Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 for 12lb, from the small ponds, including 2 Golds, plus 6 C&R, Alan Whitton, Stirling, 4 for 11lb including 4lb Gold and a Blue, John Sneddon, Falkirk, 3 for 10lb 8oz including a Gold and a Blue and Sol Gibson, Stirling, 2 for 7lb 4oz from the Meadow Pond including a Blue.
