The best catching flies last week included the Kate McLaren, Cats Whisker, Crunchers and the Ace of Spades and fish are getting caught in all areas.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) A mainly dry but windy week at Forbes of Kingennie. Fishing conditions were quite difficult at times but there were still some excellent catches recorded. Water clarity in the Boathouse Pool was superb allowing fish to be stalked and targeted with dries, nymphs and buzzers. On Sunday Logan Cumming returned an excellent rainbow of 11lbs+ amongst his catch of eight fish and Chris Watson returned another beautiful rainbow of 15lbs+ in his ten fish catch. Other notable catches were by Bruce Thomson and Joe Westland who returned 23 and 20 respectively, mainly taken on buzzers and dries. The best brown trout of the week went to John Crowther who returned a magnificently conditioned, gloriously coloured fish of 2lbs+. The Burnside Pool hit both highs and lows with catches often changing on consecutive days. On one of the better days Tam Costello returned nine (all on buzzers), Ken Jones thirteen, George Birse ten and Lar Findlay returned ten, the latter mainly taken on the Zonker. Some decent catches were taken on dries, especially in the evenings with Yellow Owl and Shipman’s being prominent. The North-East wind made it very difficult to fish the Bankside but for those who took the challenge there were some fine returns. Mr. Carter had two fish for 7lbs and returned a further six. Several of the season-ticket holders returned in excess of seven fish, again taken mainly on dries or buzzers. The Woodside Pool (any legal method) generally fished well with Powerbait and Mepps spinners producing the majority of the fish. Mr. Jay had four fish for a total of 7lbs and Mr. Dennis took five for a combined weight of 9lbs 8oz.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco). It has been a lovely week with plenty of sunshine for a change. The fish have been taking mostly just under the surface, sometimes a bit lower when the sun is really bright with a wide variety of small flies and lures.
Tony Hingley from Alloa had 4 for 14lbs on a Black Fritz, Graham King, Almondbank, 3 fish for 10lbs on Dries, Sonny Ballie, Boness, 2 for 7lbs 8oz on a Damsel, Jack Scougall, Airdrie, 3 for 8lbs 4oz on Buzzers and Bob Ross from Kilsyth took a brace weighing 6lbs 8oz on an Orange Fritz. Jimmy Linton from Glasgow caught 4 for 11lbs 4oz on a Wotsit, Martin Hudak, Alloa, 2 for 5lbs on a Buzzer, Davie Black, Lochgelly, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach and Andy Airnes from. Clackmannan used a Breen & White Bug to take 3 for 10lbs.K McNicol from Dunipace had 2 for 8lbs – best 6lbs on an Olive Bibio and Jack Gibb from Clackmannan had a brace for 7lbs on a Green Bug.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The welcome bright sunshine, combined with a nasty cold east wind, made for tough fishing conditions.Out of the wind it was hot during the day, but as soon as the sun started to dip the temperature plummeted. The water temperature actually dropped during the week from 14oC on Monday to 12oC by the weekend. The fish were all round the pond but tended to be sheltering down wind and in shady spots under trees and reeds. Most of the week they were to be found between 2 and 4 feet down but at times went deeper. There was a bit of surface activity all round from time to time with the small ponds seeing more of this, as would be expected, and those trying dry flies had a certain amount of success.Buzzers fished either static or with a slow retrieve was the best tactic for most of the week, although those fishing small lures and nymphs with a reasonably fast retrieve were also lucky – if they got the retrieve just right.Unusually for Swanswater, a large number of anglers opted for catch and release this week, thus the shorter than usual list of catch returns. The Fishery is currently open 8.00am to 9.30pm every day.
Agris Kalns, Stirling, 4 for 15lb including 7lb 4oz Rainbow, Alex Knox, Glasgow, 6lb 10oz Tiger, Frank Turner, Alloa, 6lb 2oz Tiger, David Milne, Falkirk, 2 for 7lb 6oz including 5lb 5oz Rainbow and Peter Bryce, Alloa, 5 for 14lb 4oz including 5lb Rainbow. Frank Barr, Falkirk, in three visits, 13 for 30lb including 2 Blues, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 10lb 8oz plus 4 caught and released and Jim McInnes, Falkirk, 3 for 8lbs 8oz.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) Last week’s great weather saw some superb catches coming off with the top taking flies being Buzzers, Daddy Longlegs, Dries and Apps Bloodworms. The Goth Angling Club had a great outing taking 42 fish for 133lbs. Also doing well on the individual front was Mr Haddock from Kirkintilloch with 3 for 7lbs, Stuart McDonald, Glasgow, 3 for 7lbs 8oz, Paul Kelly Cumbernauld, 2 for 6lbs, Alastair Black, Kirkintilloch,2 for 5lbs and A Dodds from Bishopbriggs bagged 4 for 10lbs. Mr Bowick from Glasgow caught 3 weighing 7lbs 2oz, Euan Kennedy, Torrance, 2 for 6lbs 5oz, Mr Reynolds, Bannockburn, 2 for 9lbs and B Weir from Stirling took 4 for 12lbs 7oz.
