ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 22 February 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 21 February 2016.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) Weather permitting it is planned to open the fishery for the 2016 season on Tuesday, 1st March. The usual Damsels, Cats Whisker, Dancers and Buzzers usually work best at this time of year and to begin the season the fish should all be about the 2lb mark.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Things are another step closer to spring with this past week marking a real change in the day light length. It has also been another week with no rain which has seen the water clarity improve greatly in all the ponds making things easier. With this change in the water colour for the first time this year Buzzers have been doing really well and have been the stand out method this past week.
The Boathouse has been really clear all week and has fished well as a result. Black Buzzers and Black Nymphs fished on the washing line have caught the most fish this week as well as the usual lures taking their share. Mr Westland had a good day landing 9 fish up to 9lb on Black and Red Buzzers. Mr Kirk had 10 fish including a couple of blues over the 3lb mark fishing Black Buzzers and an Orange Fab. Mr Laurie had 2 for 5lb 8oz and put back 8 fishing Cormorants. Mr Grey had the biggest fish of the week with a 13lb 14oz rainbow taken on a yellow lure. The Burnside is now as clear as it has been all winter and has come into its because of this. The only change is that as it has cleared the fish have gone deeper and a sunken line or straight lining buzzers has been the way to catch them. Mr Barlow had good catches of 10 fish and 12 fish in very short periods of time on Black Buzzers. Mr Sheriff had 14 returned one day on a Yellow Dancer. Mr Simpson was up twice through the week and landed 19 on each trip on a mix of Blobs and Wotzits. The biggest fish this past week was taken by Mr White with a fish estimated at around 12lb caught on a Damsel. The Woodside has been really buy this past week and the fish have been well up for it with lots of fish being landed on spinners which is a little unusual. Mr Smart and his son did well landing 8 fish for 14lb all caught on Mepps spinners. Mr Mitchell had 4 for 6lb 8oz on a wee Toby and over the weekend there were a total of 27 anglers with a total of 48 fish for a weight of 81lb.
The first round of qualifiers for the Scottish Stillwater team has been held this weekend at Allandale Tarn and it is just 4 weeks away from the heat at Kingennie. If anyone would like to fish it call us now on 01382 350777/350213 to book a peg before it fills up.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) This week with the changeable weather the water was frozen for 4 days so the first club visit of the season were lucky that on Saturday the weather was good and mostly dry. The First Bus Fishing Club had a great day taking 50 fish for 150 lbs with H Moore having the heaviest basket with 4 fish for 18lbs 12oz with the heaviest at 7lbs 12oz taken on a White Snake. All colours were working today from buzzers to lures but they had to be fished slowly due to the very cold water.
Lee Hunter from Alloa had 3 for 9lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Ray Lovell, Tillicoultry, 2 for 5lbs on a Black Cat, Ian McLeish, Dunblane, 2 for 12lbs on a Shimmy, Craig Robertson, Dunblane, 1 for 5lbs on a Yellow Dancer and Gus Drummond from Bridge of Allan took 2 for 7lbs on a Cat. Tex from Cornton caught 2 for 4lbs on a Zonker, J Alexander, Cornton, 2 for 4lbs 8oz, on a Cat, Jim Frew, Grangemouth, 3 for 8lbs on a Damsel and B. Robertson from Stirling bagged 3 fish weighing 10lbs on a Pink Lure.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) Gordon Bunce from Dalkeith had 8 on Buzzers, Jock Dyatt, Dalkeith, 5 on the Egg Fly, Donald Campbell, Prestonpans, 4 on a Rabbit and R Banbury from Dunbar caught 3 on Blobs. Robert Glass from Edinburgh had 5 on a Nomad, Jimmy Anderson, Portobello, 5 on a Nomad, Neil Keillor, Dunbar, 4 on the Damsel, Bruce Hunter, Edinburgh, 7 on Bloodworms and Tommy Dickson from Dunbar caught 9 on the Black Pennell.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Cold nights and early morning frosts at the beginning of the week led to some tougher fishing at Swanswater. After mid-week rain the weather turned milder and fish became more active again. Fish were generally being caught at a depth of between 2 and 4 feet but with some showing on the surface. The best area this week was from the island fishing into the channel, although the far bay and the area around the big tree where also productive. Fish where mostly being caught on lures including Dancer, H/H Damsel and Humungous. On colder days bright Buzzers and Bloodworm were working well while on milder days nymphs and wets like PTN, Spider and Cormorants were effective.
Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, 2 for 9lb 8oz including a 7lb 5oz Rainbow, Graeme Arthur, Stirling, in 2 visits, 6 for 19lb 8oz, Frank Barr, Falkirk, in 2 visits, 5 for 20lb,Ian Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 from lower Meadow pond for 15lb 8oz plus 3 caught and released and Robert Anderson, Stonnieburn, 5 for 12lb 4oz plus 7 caught and released. Derek Russell, Stonnieburn, 5 from Meadow pond for 11lb 8oz plus 6 caught and released, Kenny Whitehead, Helensburgh, 3 for 10lb 12oz plus 3 on catch and released, Danny Doherty, Denny, 3 for 9lb 10oz, A Rossi, 2 for 6lb and Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 4lb Rainbow.
