Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 11 January 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 10 January 2016.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Another week of bad weather has seen few anglers brave the wet and windy weather and those that have braved the conditions have had to work for their fish. All the rain in the past week has meant the ponds are still very dirty unfortunately and will need a few days of settled weather with no rain before they clear up properly.
The Boathouse has been the most sheltered pond from the wind making the fishing a little easier, as always in this water lures have been the best method as well as the bung. Mr Watson had 10 fish in a morning fishing a Black Blob under the bung with his largest around 6lb. Mr Cargill had 2 fish for 11lb on a Black Zonker with the largest weighing 8lb. The Burnside has seen the fish still sat high in the water with a floating line all that’s required, as before lures have been the best option but Mr Barlow did well in the coloured water landing 8 fish on small Black Crunchers. Mr Stevens had 4 fish for 7lb and put bank another 5 on a Rob Roy. Mr Wales returned 5 fish on a Bunny Leech with the largest estimated at around 11lb. The Woodside has been quiet but the fish have been getting caught by those who have ventured out. Mr Moffat had 2 for 3lb, Mr West had 2 for 3lb and Mr Wells and his son had 4 for 8lb all on Powerbait.
On Sunday the 27th of March, Kingennie will be holding one of the heats for the Scottish Stillwater Fly Fishing team to go down to Wales for the international in October. There are still space available for the heat, anyone looking to fish it please call 01382 350777 to book a space.

3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The water is not frozen at the time of writing and the fish have been getting caught in the first two feet with various flies including Ace of Spades, Ally and the Bloodworm.
T. McLaughlin from Uddingston had 4 fish for 12lbs on the Ace of Spades, Ally Ford,                      Milnathort, 4 for 14lbs 8oz on an Ace of Spades, Russell McKendrick, Alva, 2 for 6lbs on a Bloodworm and John Barlow from Glasgow used a Yellow Dancer to take a fish weighing 2lbs 8oz. J. Potter Jnr, from Airdrie, took a brace for 6lbs 4oz on an Ally McCoist, Jimmy Mackie, Glasgow, 3 for 12lbs 4oz on a Blob and Harry Graham from Glenrothes had 1 for 4lbs on a Goldie.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) The appalling weather conditions kept the angling numbers well down but those who ventured out were far from disappointed. Neil Raeburn from Edinburgh had 9 on Blobs and Buzzers, Paul Harvey, Musselburgh, 7 on Buzzers, Jock Kettles, Edinburgh 5 on Buzzers and Ken Morrison from Edinburgh used a Bloodworm to take 3. Also on the 3 fish mark was Mick Mulgrew from Danderhall who used Buzzers and Steve Rogers from Edinburgh used a Rabbitiser to take his.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) A few days without much rain and a couple of frosty nights led to some excellent fishing this week. The aerators were on for the first time this winter on Friday night and there was no problem with ice.  Unfortunately the heavy rain on Thursday morning and overnight on Saturday led to slightly coloured water but the level is normal and things are clearing quickly.    Most of the week the fish were being taken around 3 feet down and were well spread out, with fish being caught in most areas of the main pond including the island, channel, roadside, far bay and dam area.   The small ponds also fished very well with many anglers opting to catch and release there.   The usual wide selection of flies were working well with the favourite patterns being Damsel, Cut-throat Cat, Dancer, Viva, Montana, Diawl Bach, Cormorant and Buzzer. The Fishery is still open 8am to 4pm every day.
Jim Milne, Alloa, 5 for 15lb 4oz including 4lb 8oz Rainbow, plus 3 caught and released, Iain Whitelaw, Dunipace, 5 for 13lb including 3 from the Meadow Pond, plus 4 caught and released, Danny Doherty, Denny, 4 for 13lb 10oz including 4lb Rainbow, C Brown, 4 for 12lb including 1 from the Meadow Pond and Brian MacIntosh Snr, Banknock, 4 for 11lb 8oz.
