ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 04 January 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 03 January 2016.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) A happy new year from us all here at Forbes of Kingennie. The end of the year saw some great fishing but since then the weather has been horrific with lots of rain and strong winds. This has led to very dirty water in all the ponds unfortunately but hopefully it will pass soon and we can get back to normal conditions.
There have been a few anglers braving the nasty conditions over the past week and good numbers of fish are still getting caught. The Burnside has been the busiest pond and the best return came from David Simpson with 28 fish caught and released with the largest around 8lb, all of these were caught on Black and Green Blobs fished very shallow under a bung. Mr Valentine did well fishing a similar method and ended up with 14 fish, the largest around the 11lb mark. On the Boathouse most anglers have been fishing various lures and that has produced the fish. Mr Heenan did really well fishing a slow glass and a Black and Green Lure and landed 15 fish including one estimated at around 12lb and lost another of equal size. On the Bankside the water stayed clear for a bit longer and Cormorants and Cats Whiskers were the best flies. Mr Sheppard had 11 on a white lure on a floating line with one around 6lb.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Included in some of the best catches last week was R McKenzie from Rosyth with 3 fish for 11lbs on a Black Lure, Allan Mitchell, Stirling, 3 for 11lbs 12oz on a Black Fritz, Neil Bruce, Falkirk, 3 for 10lbs on an Orange Fritz and Jim Bruce from Stirling caught 4 for 12lbs on a Diawl Bach. Andy Airnes from Clackmannan used an Ally McCoist to take a brace weighing 6lbs, Gary Howarth, Slamannan, 2 for 6lbs 12oz on a Black Lure, C McLean, Stirling, 2 for 6lbs on a Goldie, Jeff Thomson, Blackford, e for 7lbs on a Green Fritz and Jim Jarvie from Stenhousemuir took 3 for 9lbs on a Viva. Last but not least J Harper from Clackmannan used a Green Fritz to bag 2 for 6lbs.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a very quiet week due to the terrible weather but despite this Shaun Gray from Bonnyrigg included a fine 12lb fish in his basket of 6 taken on Buzzers. Also doing well was Donald Campbell from Prestonpans with 6 on an App Bloodworm, Neil Keillor, Dunbar, 5 on a Black Rabbit, Bruce Hunter, 7 on a Black Pennell and Paul Harvey from Musselburgh took 7 on the Egg Fly.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week between Christmas and New Year saw some excellent fishing conditions and was a busy time for the Fishery as anglers took advantage of relatively dry, mild weather over the holiday period. The only really bad day, weather-wise, was Wednesday when there was more heavy rain and strong winds. The fish remained in the top 3 to 4 feet of the water and were well spread out all round the main pond. On the small ponds, the fish were nearer the surface and very active, creating some great sport for those who chose to fish there. Regular angler, Danny Doherty, had a good end to his year landing a 7lb Tiger. Several Rainbows in the 4lb to 5lb range also feature in the catch returns. Favourite flies this week included Buzzer, Orange Fritz, Damsel, Cat’s Whisker, Viva, Diawl Bach and Bloodworm. The Fishery is currently open every day from 8.00am to 4.00pm
