Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 21 December 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 20 December 2015.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather was kind in the past week and has made for some lovely conditions for catching fish. The mild weather has seen the fish high in the water and very active. The water has continued to clear in all the ponds helping improve the conditions furthermore. Over the festive period we will be open every day apart from the 25th and the 1st when we will be closed so there is plenty time to get out for a cast over the next couple of weeks.
The Boathouse, as of Monday morning has about 3-4 feet of visibility and improving all the time. A real mixture of flies and methods has been effective with a mix of different lures working but orange has been a trigger colour. Black Buzzers have been the best natural pattern in a size’s 12 and 14, fished either straight lining or under the bung. The bung has been effective when it is calm but not so much when it has been windy; again Buzzers and the Squirmy have been the chosen patterns. Mr Mill had a fish of 7lb 12oz in a bag of 4 for 14 lb, Mr Leslie returned 19 fish on a mix of small lures and Miss Shanto returned 3 fish with the biggest estimated at 12/13lb.
The Burnside has been busy and some anglers are doing very well and some are struggling. The fish are very high in the water and a floating line is all that is needed. The washing line is probably the most effective method with a bright Fab and a nymph with some orange in it. Mr Phillip returned 17 with the largest over 10lb on Blobs and Fabs on a floater. Mr Cheetham had 5 fish for 10lb the returned another 19 including a fish of around 7lb. Mr Birse had a big fish of around 14lb on a Rob Roy. The Bankside has been very under fished in the past week, Mr Soave had 3 for 8lb on a Black Lure and Mr Campbell returned 6 on a Yellow Dancer. The Woodside has seen several anglers over the last week, with Powerbait under the float as always the best method. Mr Strachan landed the largest fish out the Woodside in recent memory with a stunning fish that weighed 11lb. The fish was actually caught on a fly rod and a Black and Green Lure. Mr Crawford and his son had 4 fish for 7lb on Powerbait.
Over the winter period the fishery is offering a 2 hour catch and release permit on the fly ponds priced at £6 for the Burnside, £7 for the Bankside and £8 for the Boathouse. As with all catch and release flies must be barbless and you must stay on the pond that you have paid for while fishing on the 2 hour permit.

3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was another mixed week with changeable weather from cold to really warm for this time of year. The fish are still being caught in the first 2-3 feet of water with a wide variety of flies and a lot of black based patterns are featuring prominently. Andrew Ferguson from Dollar had a fish weighing 3lbs on a Blob, Hector Wilson, Bannockburn, 3 for 10lbs on a Hector’s Fancy, Allan Mitchell, Stirling, 3 for 10lbs 8oz on a Cut Throat Cat, Harry Irvine, Blairgowrie, 4 for 13lbs 8oz on an Ace of Spades and Ian Soutar from Methven used a small dry to bag a brace weighing 7lbs. John Graham from Airdrie took 3 for 14lbs on a Shipman’s Buzzer,
Mike Christie, Perth, 2 for 7lbs on an Orange Blob, Greg Lockhart, Dunblane, 3 for 8lbs 4oz on a Super Ally, Dave Wilkie, Stirling, 3 for 11lbs on an Ace of Spades, Robert Kettles, Perth, 2 for 6lbs 8oz on an Ace of Spades and Jim Donnelly from Tullibody caught 3 weighing 10lbs on Dries and Buzzers.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) W McKay from Dalkeith used a Humpy to catch the ‘fish of the week’ a cracking rainbow of 14lbs 8oz caught on an Egg Fly and Alex Rowley from Dalkeith wasn’t far behind by included one at 12lbs taken on a Humpy and included in a basket of 3. Also doing well was Neil Raeburn from Edinburgh with 4 on a Black Rabbit, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 6 on an Egg Fly, Mark Anderson, Edinburgh, 6 non an Egg Fly, D Smith, Dunbar, 4 on the Diawl Bach and Derek Demarco from Haddington took 4 on the Egg Fly.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Another wet and, at times, windy, but mild week saw very few anglers out. Those who did venture forth to brave the elements were treated to some excellent sport and great bags. The unseasonably mild weather, with the water temperature sitting around 8oC, means that the fish are very high in the water for the time of year and are still being caught in the top couple of feet. Fish have been seen moving on the surface of all the ponds although they are not taking off the top on the main pond. However dry flies are still working on the small ponds. Favourite patterns this week included Damsel, Dancer, Diawl Bach, Buzzer, Bloodworm, Kate McLaren and Cormorant. Opening times over the next few weeks are 8.00am to 4.00pm every day except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 1st January when the Fishery is closed. On Sunday 27th December the annual Charity Competition is being held on Swanswater, 8.30 for a 9.00 start; the small ponds will be open 8.30 to 4.00. There are still a few spaces left for the competition.
Alasdair, Morna, Ian and Alan would like to wish all our anglers a very Merry Christmas!
