JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 14 December 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 13 December 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) After all the rain recently this past week has been much more settled and the fishing has really improved along with it, the light winds and much clearer water has resulted in some outstanding returns.
The Boathouse has been the most productive pond as it cleared almost gin clear. Lures have been successful but for the most consistent sport buzzers have been the best option. Mr Robertson returned 24 on Black Buzzers and a Yellow Dancer. Mr Simpson returned 15 including 2 over 10lb on a mix of lures. Mr Doyle had 3 for 10lb and another 11 returned on Buzzers. The biggest fish was 13lb + caught by Mr Fisher as well as another 6 returned. The Burnside has also been very good with visibility up to over 2 feet now and improving all the time. Regular angler Mr Barlow has had a great week with returns of 18, 13, 28 over the last week with the largest weighing more than 12lb, the top patterns for himself have been a Squirmy Worm fished 2-5 feet under an indicator and small Black Nymphs. Mr Birse had 18 on a Rob Roy fished on a floater. Mr Thompson had 11 on Buzzers with the biggest around 4lb. The Bankside has not seen many anglers this week but those who fished did well. Mr Soave had 4 for 17lb with the largest weighing 9lb 8oz, a black and green lure doing best. Mr Sherriff had 9 on Yellow Dancers with one around 6lb.
The Woodside has had a steady stream of anglers with 25 anglers landing 54 fish for 91lb. Spinning has been very successful this week as well as Powerbait.
3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was a very rough week weather wise but thankfully the frost didn’t freeze the loch and the fish are still being taken in the top 2-3 feet on various patterns but black is certainly the ‘in’ colour. Kong from Crieff had 2 fish for 8lbs 8oz on a Black & Green Fritz, John Graham, Crieff, 3 for 9lbs on a Black Buzzer, Harry Irvine, Blairgowrie, 2 for 8lbs on a Humungus, Tom Adams, Tillicoultry,1 at 3lbs on a Black & Green Bug and 91 year old Bobby Wilson from Falkirk used a Black & Green Fritz to take a brace weighing 6lbs. Jack Horne from Auchterarder took 2 for 6lbs on a Bloodworm, Hector Wilson, Bannockburn, 3 for 10lbs on a Black & Silver Fritz, John Brindley, Liverpool, 2 for 5lbs on a Bloodworm, Alistair Ford, Milnathort, 2 for 9lbs on a Black Spider and Harry Graham from Glenrothes bagged a brace for 8lbs on a Black Fritz.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a quiet week due to the nasty weather but that didn’t stop Eddie Peden from Pentcaitland taking 4 on a Black & Silver Buzzer and this included 1 at 12lbs and another at 10lbs, Jack Hay from Haddington also took 4 including one at 9lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach and Ken Morrison from Edinburgh took 5 on a Black Lure. Neil Raeburn from Edinburgh had 4 on a Black Rabbit, Mick Mulgrew, Danderhall, 4 on Buzzers, Paul Harvey, Musselburgh 4 on an Egg Fly and Chris McGhee, Musselburgh also used an Egg Fly to take 4.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Some cracking 5lb to 7lb Rainbows are being landed at Swanswater at present. The weather was pretty wet and windy for most of the week with a change to severe frost on Sunday. Fish were seen moving all week, including on Sunday, with some even taking dry flies on the small ponds on Saturday. In general the fish were well spread out and to be found around 2 to 3 feet down early in the week, going deeper on Sunday. Although the weather was pretty poor, the fishing was very good and the few who braved the conditions were well rewarded with some great catches and good bags. A variety of flies was taking fish with lures, nymphs and wets all catching. Favourite patterns included many of the usual favourites – Dancer, Cat, Montana, Cormorant, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear, Buzzer, Spider, Kate McLaren and Bibio.
Spaces are still available for the Annual Charity Competition on Sunday 27th December. For full details and to reserve a place, please contact the Fishery.
