JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 23 March 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 22 March 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual front Ronnie Stewart from Alva kept 4 fish weighing 8lb 8oz, Hamish Fulton, Menstrie, 2 fish for 6lb 10oz – heaviest 4lb 3oz and released 3, John Bell, Airth, took 4 fish weighing 7lb and John Philliban from Stenhousemuir kept 4 fish weighing 7lb 8oz. Jordan Tripney from Grangemouth had 3 fish weighing 6lb and Ross Peterson & Craig Easton from Falkirk retained 2 fish weighing 5lb and released 11. The Stanley & District A/C had a good outing taking 17 fish for 30lb.
The top taking flies included the Yellow Cats Whisker, Olive Damsel, Cormorant and various Buzzers whilst the best fishing area has been from the start of the dogleg to the dam wall on the south shore.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) There has been a wee taste of spring here at Kingennie this week and the fish are responding to the change in weather a few fish have been taken on dries and more have been seen to be rising late in the day. Some larger fish have been coming off all the ponds with the Bankside and Burnside producing double figure fish. On the Boathouse still the most productive method has been lures fished on intermediates, the water has been really clear so you have been able to target fish but that does throw up its own problems with the fish seeing you, your leader and any imperfections that may be in your leader so very good fun if not a little tricky. The Burnside Pool continues to fish well to various methods some anglers taking fish straight off the top with others taking fish very deep. Flies that have been working well on Burnside have been Apps Bloodworm, Buzzers and Blobs. On the Bankside Pool the fish have started to spread out from the bays and can now be found all over the pool, the north bank was a hot spot last week with a lot of fish falling to bloodworm in various patterns fished on a floating line. The Woodside any method pool has been fishing really well and any method has meant any method the fish have been taking all sorts with Powerbait probably just out doing worms and maggots.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Jack Hay from Haddington had a good catch of n8 fish on the Yellow Dancer including specimens of 6lbs 8oz and 5lbs. 5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Did the solar eclipse affect the fishing? Many anglers thought there were a lot of fish rising before the eclipse, but that things went quiet during it. Some thought that it may have made things a bit harder on Friday, but others were of the opinion that it made no difference at all. During the week the fishing was generally pretty good, but the bright sun on Saturday and cold wind on Sunday made things a little harder at the weekend. The fish depth varied from the top couple of feet for most of the week to virtually on the bottom on Saturday. Fish were caught all around the main area of Swanswater with the dam, overflow and island the favourite spots. The water is very clear at present and the temperature is up to 7oC. Some fish are now coming to wet flies although most anglers are still fishing lures or buzzers. Favourite patterns included Ace of Spades, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Damsel, Cormorant, Diawl Bach, Buzzer, Kate McLaren, Bibio and Spider.
