Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 05 January 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 04 January 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL SPRING 2015
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It’s been a very busy festive period at Forbes of Kingennie with a lot of anglers out even in even the coldest weather when we have been out breaking the ice to make sure there’s plenty water to fish in. The ice has all melted now but we were out every day breaking it and there hasn’t been a day where every pond has been fishable.
The Boathouse has been the most popular pond as of late due to there being no ice at all and the water has been very clear. In the cold weather the best method of catching the fish has been the Bung, you don’t have to go too deep as most of the fish seem to be getting caught between 2 and 4 feet deep on all sorts of fly including Buzzers, Bloodworms, Squirmy Worms, Cat Bugs, Crunchers, Blobs and Lures. There has been some big fish caught and released with the largest estimated at around 12lb but most of the bigger ones are in the 4/7lb range. The Burnside has been fishing very similarly but you just have to go much deeper, setting your flies at around 12/ 8 feet deep has seen you taking fish regularly. The same sort of patterns have been working but Buzzers have been the best. The best pegs seem to be up at the top end of the pond in the shallower water but they have been caught all over. The Bankside hasn’t seen quite as many anglers but has fished really well to those that were willing to work hard and find the fish. They seem to be moving from the first to the second bay depending on the weather but they have been well shoaled up and very catchable. Pulled lures have been working better with the Bung with the Yellow Dancer and Damsels being the best. The Woodside has fished really well as usual at this time of year with most of the fish held up in the inflow from the burn. Powerbait and wee spinners have been taking loads of fish as normal.
On the 27th of December we held our end of year competition on the Burnside and Boathouse where 21 rods landed a total of 120 fish with the largest estimated at 12lb from the Boathouse and around 10lb from the Burnside. There were 2 runaway leaders with Davie Simpson and Robert Gibson taking the lead early on but in the end Mr Simpson took the victory with 18 fish from seven platforms and Mr Gibson was second with 17 fish from seven platforms. Every angler took fish and the weather was kind to us on the day which makes all the difference at this time of year.
Happy New Year to everyone and all the best for the coming year from all the team at Kingennie - see you soon.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The winner of the delayed Boxing Day competition was Ben Robertson from Penicuik with a fine catch of 9 fish weighing 27lbs – overall 63 fish were caught. Richard Anthony from Edinburgh used a Squirmy to take 12, Dave Clark, Dalkeith, 10 on a Hare’s Ear and Buzzers, Bob Black, Haddington, 8 on a Mini Cat, Paul Kennedy, Haddington, 7 on Buzzers and Willie Ewing from Dalkeith caught 6 on Egg Flies.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The water was frozen last Sunday and Monday as the temperature dropped very quickly to -6.5 degrees but incredibly back up to 10 degrees above on the 1st of 2015 which must be a record for New Year's Day. The fish are actually being caught just under the surface to about 2 feet down with some anglers going a little deeper on a wide variety of flies.
Ron Lusher from Perth had a brace weighing 7lbs on a Diawl Bach, Ewan McDougall, Tullibody, 3 for 11lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer, Joe Hunter, Tullibody, 3 for 9lbs on a Damsel and Kirstie Grant from Perth took 2 for 9lbs on a Black & Green Fritz. John Brindley from Liverpool had a couple of visits taking 4 fish for 13lbs on a Cat and Bloodworm, Davy Black, Lochgelly, 2 for 89lbs 12oz on Buzzers, John Barlow, Glasgow, 2 for 8lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer and Johnny Weir from Airdrie used an Orange Fritz to bag a brace for 5lbs.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week started with some really cold days and nights and the aerators did their usual good job in keeping the ice at bay and allowing the Fishery to remain open. The boats were doing well in the cold weather as the fish headed for the deeper areas in the middle of the main loch. The New Year started wet and windy and although the water was a bit coloured on Friday, it soon cleared and there was some excellent fishing over the weekend. A slight rise in water temperature saw the fish move out again into the channel and the far bay. On Swanswater the fish were anything from 3 to 5 feet down. Fish were still being seen on the surface, particularly on the small ponds, where they were being taken in the top 18 inches. A wide range of patterns were working this week including Dancer, Damsel, Nomad, Cat’s Whisker, Diawl Bach, Montana, Hare’s Ear, Buzzer, Bloodworm and Black Spider.
Bill Mouat, Shotts, 4 for 15lb 10oz including 5lb 2oz Blue, Donald McMurchy, 5 for 17lb including a Blue, Peter Clark, Edinburgh, 5 for 16lb 8oz including 3 Blues, Allan Laing, East Kilbride, 5 for 15lb 8oz including a Blue and Darren Hill, Alva, 5 for 15lb including 4 Blues. Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 6 for 19lb, Colin Brown, Sauchie, 4 for 14lb including 4lb Blue, David MacLean, Edinburgh, 4 for 13lb, George Kochanek, Tullibody, 4 for 12lb 12oz and Alasdair Fyfe, Perth, 3 for 12lb 10oz.
