All areas of the fishery continue to produce good baskets with the Daddy Longlegs, Bibio Hopper, CDC Hopper, Sedgehog, Mini Sedge |Muddler and the Ally McCoist all working well.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The ongoing hot weather is glorious for a day’s fishing but the trout are proving that bit harder to catch as the water temperature rises. We don’t normally wish for rain but a decent downpour or two would help by flushing out the system and lowering the water temperature. The Boathouse Pool is quite challenging but fish can be stalked and have been taken on Buzzers or small lures. A very slow retrieve has been the key to most catches. Small versions of Rob Roy and Yellow Dancer have produced positive results as have Buzzer patterns in red/black and black/green. The Burnside Pool has benefitted from being especially deep. With much cooler water in the lower layers this is where most of the fish have been taken. Small lures and Bloodworm patterns have achieved success. The gin clear water in the Woodside Pool has made fishing somewhat more difficult and presentation has needed to be particularly good. Although the water temperature is high there are still fish to be caught early in the morning and during the two hours before dusk. Green or orange Powerbait has been the most successful method, although several fish have been taken on worms and maggots. Bankside is somewhat out of sorts at present. Although there are numbers of fish moving they are particularly difficult to catch. Some success has been had on Buzzers and Dries, again mainly early morning and late evening.
Troutmasters news. It is a big well done to Robert Gibson from all the team here at Kingennie. What a difference a day makes, day 2 of the final, perfect weather conditions for fishing, but the little blighters were hard to get hold of! It was hard fishing for the young anglers, but they should much determination out there and all done very well. However, we got a winner and we would like to say big congratulations to Robert Gibson who represented Kingennie fishery and is our new Troutmasters champion.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) With the water still warm the fish are being slow to take but there is plenty of good sport trying to tempt them. A wide variety of dries and some lures have been catching but when the sun is strong they are taking round the shaded areas under the trees and round the springs.
Ian Conn from Tillicoultry had 3 fish for 8lbs on a Black & Green Fritz, David Drummond from Tillicoultry took 3 for 10lbs on a Black & Green Fritz, Gavin Lindsay, Tullibody, 2 for 5lbs on a Hopper and Harry Bakker from Sauchie used a Buzzer to bag a beauty of 4lbs 4oz. Jim Marshall from Stirling caught 2 for 9lbs – best 5lbs on a Black Nymph, Robert Young, Kilsyth, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Black Spider, John Patrick, Kilsyth, 3 for 10lbs on a Green Buzzer and Fay McLeod from Perth took a brace weighing 7lbs.D Duffy from Inveraray had 2 for 5lbs 8oz on Dries and Hector Wilson from Bannockburn took 4 for 12lbs 12oz on a Bloodworm.
IMPORTANT NOTE. When the Ryder Cup comes to nearby Gleneagles in late September the road to the fishery will be open as usual. The only road which is closed is the one on the A823 along the short part at the front of Gleneagles. There will be restrictions up and down the Glendevon road but anyone who knows they will be coming here will be able to get a pass from the fishery nearer the time. The main roads will only be a bit busier with buses from 9 - 10am and 4 - 5 pm. The traffic from Stirling will not be affected and the traffic from Perth will have to come through Auchterarder instead of cutting off at Gleneagles.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) It was another week of lovely summer weather – great to be out and about in, but unfortunately not the best for fishing! For most of the week it was very hot and sunny leading to high water temperatures and low oxygen levels. On the days when there was some cloud cover the fishing improved but mostly the fish were deep in the water during the day Anglers were reporting getting lots of follows but not so many takes. In the evenings the fish were nearer the surface. The two small ponds fished better than the big pond possibly due having more of a flow of water through them. Favourite patterns this week included Kate McLaren, Damsel, Diawl Bach, Dancer, Spider, Sedge and Buzzer.
The Fishery is delighted to have been listed at number 40, out of around 540 fisheries in the UK, in the recent Trout Fisherman Magazine poll and number 4 in Scotland. Swanswater is hosting “taster” sessions on the small ponds during the Stirling International Angling Festival over the weekend of 9th and 10th August.
