Lake fishing report

Lake of Menteith 17th June 2014
6ft Water Temperature 18.5C, Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.7m.
The washing line with biscuit booby, hopper boobies or damsel boobies with buzzers or diawl bachs further up or dries (yellow owl, daddies) have all been mentioned by anglers as successful tactics/flies. The areas fishing receiving mention have been The Butts, Heronry, Malling, Gateside, Sams Point and the Road Shore

On Saturday 16th Luggiebank AC won the Fly Dressers Guild Scotland Contest for the first time in their history. Top rod was Jim Twaddle (with Golden Trophy). Heaviest fish fell to Geordie Black (holding the silver bowl).

In the Baynes Tackle and Glen Garioch Boat League George Whyte from Muthil was top rod and Bill Ramage from Alva moved to take over the leadership of the league. The 31 anglers landed 121 fish, giving a rod average of 3.9.


Heat 7 of the Scottish Club Championships saw 13 teams competing. Top team on the night were Rothes Oak who caught 18 trout (12 returned) for a total weight of 35lb 11 oz. 2nd place went to Coldstream with 12 trout ( 6 returned) for 23lb 5oz and 3rd place went to Dunfermline Railway with 9 trout (4 returned) for 16lb 14oz. These teams go through to the semi final on 22nd August. The top 5 rods qualifying for "Champion of Champions" final 17th October were:1st Gary Ormiston Rothes Oak 8 trout 15lb 6oz; 2nd Barry Philips Dunfermline Railway 6 trout 11lb 7oz., 3rd Bill Barnes Rothes Oak 5 fish 10lb 14oz, 4th place Geordie Brown Rothes Oak with 5 trout for 9lb 7oz and 5th Keith Renton Coldstream also with 5 trout for 9lb 4oz. Gary was using a floating line with a three fly cast with cormorants, crunchers and fab on tail. He tried different flies in the top three feet of water with a figure of eight retrieve. Gary started on the road shore then went to Kates Brae. He also tried dry fly to tempt rising trout after the rain had gone. His best flies were olive and fiery brown crunchers. 

The top team captain, the angler with best basket and captor of heaviest trout, all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky, courtesy of sponsors Morrison Bowmore Distillers.

In the Anglian water Heats Neilston Fly Fishers were the top 6 man team during the day. Also qualifying were RASC and Tweed Valley Tanglers A. Top Rod Brian MAcKenzie. In the Evening Menteith Ospreys and Saltire FF progresses with George whyte top man fishing his famous Stevie May.
