Lake of Menteith 10th June 2014
6ft Water Temperature 16C , Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.m.
Big hatches “best ever” type may fly hatches at the moment, especially in the Butts and Heronry but less so at Gateside. Where the hatches are big the fish are taking big bushy flies (hooked my first rainbow on a dap at the weekend) readily. In Gateside the washing line with a fab or booby has been more effective. Above – Glen Garioch are our whisky sponsors in 2014. Below Paul Barr was followed by this mayfly as he passed Stable Point.

In the J Bayne fishing Tackle and Glen Garioch Boat League Andy Kemp from Bridge of Earn was top rod. Andy was in the same boat as George Whyte who also had 10 fish, they started in the Heronry then went over to Gateside down near the burn mouth where they deployed a midge tip with a candy booby and nymphs.Tom Buchanan celebrated his 70th birthday by going back to the top of the league along with Brian McKenzie.  The 27 anglers caught 115 fish and no one blanked!!In the Scottish Club Championships 13 teams competed in Heat 7 at Lake of Menteith.  Conditions were pretty poor with gusty winds and continuous rain. Boats headed to Lochend, Heronry and Gateside Bay (cages).  First few hours were hard going, but by 9.30 pm the wind dropped and rain eased off.  Trout started to feed, and show on surface.  1st place fell to team Leslie Llanilar with 14 trout for 27lb  7 oz.  2nd place to Dalzell Steel with 13 trout for 26lb 2oz  3rd place to St. Boswells & Newtown with 11 trout  for  21lb  14oz. These teams go to the semi-final on 22nd August.  In parallel competition "Champion of Champions" where top 5 rods go straight to final at Lake on 17th October, 1st place fell to Leslie Llanilars angler David Dunn whose 9 trout weighed in at  19lb  4oz.   2nd place to Hans Kane  Dalzell Steel with 7 trout for 14lb  9oz. 3rd place to Jim Mackie  Dalzell Steel with 6 trout for 11lb  9oz.  4th place to Paul Cushnie Leslie Llanilar with 5 trout for 10lb  13oz   5th place to Dave Wright  St. Boswells & Newtown with 5 trout for 9lb  15oz.  Heaviest fish on night was a lovely rainbow of 6lb  9oz caught by Munnoch A.C. angler Alan Harvie.  The team captain, angler with best catch, and angler catching heaviest fish on night, all received bottles of malt whisky "Glen Garioch" courtesy of sponsors Morrison Bowmore , Distillers.
Other news. Neil Ward and Tom Young from Lochgilpheasd witnessed a Roebuck swimming out in the middle and remembered when they netted a swimming red squirrel – which lept back in again and swam off. The mystery crapper in the café has been identified – we had a hedgehog behind the couch. More fish lies on Facebook: Lake of Menteith Fisheries.
