Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 28 April 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 27 April
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) Included amongst the top catches for individual anglers was Jim Hunter & George Heron from Blairgowrie who retained 12 fish weighing 28lbs 8oz and released a further 16, Jim Sheehan & Peter Tong, Bridge of Allan, 6 fish for 14lb, Andrew Winning, Stonehouse, 6 fish weighing 12lb 8oz and returned 22 and Jim Plank from Stirling kept 3 fish weighing 7lb. Brendan Honeybun from Lochore kept 4 fish weighing 9lb and Jim & Crawford McEwan from Newmains caught and released 22.
On the club front Helensburgh A/C kept 51 fish weighing 111lb 4oz, Alexander’s FFC kept 21 fish weighing 49lb 8oz, Grangemouth A/C 21 fish weighing 45lb 6oz, the Grangemouth Railway A/C retained 6 fish weighing 13lb 12oz and released 12 and Dollar A/C kept 37 fish weighing 88lb 13oz and released 17.
The best catching flies and lures included the Cormorants, Red Quad Bead Worms, Dawson’s Olive, Yellow Dancer and the Kate McLaren whilst the best fishing area is on the south and north shores from Smithscleuchs and Dow Burns to the dam wall.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather has been fairly unsettled this week with a chilly easterly breeze making things slightly harder but when the wind has dropped slightly the fishing has been on very good form. Even the osprey has been up nearly every day and had a fish. After a couple of weeks of quite sporadic fishing on the Bankside the fish seem to of really settled down with the water getting much clearer and has seen fish getting caught from all over the pond on most methods. When the weather allows Buzzers are still the most productive method fished on the washing line. Yellow and Coral Dancers have caught well as have the Rob Roy and Cormorant. On the calm evenings there have been some really good rises peaking in the last 20 minutes of light just as the sun goes down. Over the weekend there were 19 fish killed for 44lb and 19 catch and release anglers returned 109 fish. Ian Barlow landed and returned the largest fish of the weekend estimated at around 12lb caught on a small black and green Cormorant Booby. The Boathouse has been a bit dirty after the rain at the end of the week but they are moving around the pond a bit more rather than just around the island. Mr McHardy’s group on Saturday weighed in 14 fish for 45lb and a further 17 returned with the biggest a lovely rainbow at 10lb 3oz caught on a red headed black lure. Most fish were taken on lures in the dirty water with black being the main colour of choice. The Burnside seems to of slowed down slightly but there are still some good bags of fish being taken. The water is still slightly coloured and this has made fishing naturals a bit harder but Buzzers and Nymphs are still catching well. A Cat’s Whisker on a slow glass still seems to be the top method with Mr Mills taking 3 fish for 6lb 13oz and putting back another 12. The Woodside is still fishing really well with again a nice spread of fish throughout the pond. The float with worms or Powerbait has been top tactic and spinning is also taking a lot of fish. Mr Brown and his son took 4 fish for 7lb including a 2lb 14oz blue trout on Powerbait.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Best catch of the week went to Jack Stevenson from Ormiston who used a Black and Silver Buzzer to bag a brace weighing 23lbs 4oz with the biggest tipping the scales at the 12lb mark. Brad Gemmell from Tranent had one at 8lbs on a Buzzer, Jack Hay, Haddington, 1 at 11lbs on a Damsel, Jack Fulton, Edinburgh, 1 at 11lbs 4oz on a Black Fritz and the Bon Accord AC from Shotts took 19 fish for 75lbs 8oz with their heaviest being one at 10lbs.The Arniston AC took 44 fish for 126lbs with David Ross catching the heaviest fish at 10lbs 4oz and on the catch and release front Paul Kennedy from Haddington had 18 on Buzzers whilst Lex Rowley from Dalkeith took 12 on a Black Dry Fly.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) the fish are now being caught just under the surface most of the time with a wide variety of flies and lures. Last Sunday the Riverside FFC had a good day taking 23 fish for 48 lbs with Jim McKay taking the heaviest basket with 4 fish for 10 lbs on a Green Pea. The Falcon FFC had a rather windy morning catching 39 fish for 82lbs 4oz with Gregor Paterson and Allan Fyffe having 4 fish for 9 lbs. Ian Sloan from Almondbank took 3 fish for 9lbs on the Ally McCoist, William Alexander, Menstrie, 2 fish for 5lbs 8oz on a Dunkeld, Allan Stirling, Auchterarder, 3 for 7lbs 8oz on a Klinkhammer and B. Barbour from Cumbernauld took 4 fish for 11lbs on a Zulu. Ronnie Stanovich from Glasgow caught 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Zulu, Allan Mitchell, Stirling, had a brace for 6lbs – best 4lbs on an Ally McCoist and Earl Feighan from Bonnybridge took 4 for 9lbs on a Damsel. Hector Wilson from Bannockburn used a Bloodworm to catch 3 fish weighing 8lbs, and seven year old Blake Compton-Howe from Blackford had 1 fish at 2lbs on a Black Lure.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The fishing remained very good this week despite the cold east wind and the heavy rain on Friday night which coloured the water in certain areas on Saturday. Fish were to be found all round Swanswater for most of the week, although the island and the area it were sometimes hotspots. At the beginning of the week, the fish were around 5 to 6 feet down but as the week went on they got higher in the water being taken anything from 6 inches to 2 feet down. Most were looking for something to chase so a fast retrieve was advisable, and the Browns and Tigers were again taking close into the edge. The conditions seemed to suit these two varieties, particularly the Tigers with a large number featuring in the catch returns. Several Browns and Blues were also taken and many anglers were going home with a bag full of different varieties. Browns and Tigers were also being taken from the small ponds with one lucky angler going away with 4 Tigers in his bag. The Fishery is currently open from 8am to 9pm every day. Please note that we now accept credit and debit cards as well as cash payments.
