Fishing report by Jim Boyd

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 24 February 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 23 February 2014.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery opens for the 2014 season on the 1st March when good sport is expected on the south shore with the Damsel, Cat, Ace of Spades and Dancers all expected to do well fished on intermediates. However, if it is at all mild then Buzzers fished on a floater will do well.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It was a busy weekend here at Forbes of Kingennie with a lot of anglers taking advantage of the slightly better weather and much clearer water in all the ponds. The Boathouse has fished very well over the weekend with all but one angler taking their limit. As usual lures were the more productive method with yellow dancers and hot head damsels being the favoured patterns. Mr Bairner took his 4 fish for 16lb 15oz, Mr Duncan had 2 for 7lb 9oz and the biggest fish of the week came to Mr Ross with a 6lb 6oz rainbow taken on a Cormorant. The Bankside has seen the biggest change in the fishing with fish being caught form nearly all the way round the pond. Smaller patterns such as Buzzers and wet flies have started taking a lot more fish, although lures such as the Black and Green Fritz and the Hottie Damsel on an intermediate have been the most popular methods. Mr West took 2 fish for 4lb 9oz and returned another 7, Mr Stuart kept 2 for 5lb and returned another 10 and Mr Bairner returned 11 after moving from the Boathouse. The Burnside has continued to see most of the fish sat at the top of the pond and if you can find the depth and speed there has been a lot of fish to be caught. Buzzers are catching again as well as lures. Mr Bell returned 7 after taking his fish from the Boathouse, Mr Macintyre returned 8 on a Black and Green Hot Head. Mr Jones kept 2 for 5lb 4oz one of which was a 3lb blue then returned a further 6. The Woodside has been fishing fantastically and for a change Powerbait hasn’t been the most productive method. Spinners have taken the most fish followed by the worm under a float. Over the weekend 28 anglers landed a total of 56 fish for a weight of 89lb the largest being a 2lb 14oz brown trout caught on a worm. First time angler, young Callum Smith, caught his first ever fish quickly followed by his second and third while fishing a Damsel Nymph with a bit of help from his dad - the son weighed in 4 fish for 6lb 8oz.

On Saturday the 8th of March, for the fourth year now, Kingennie will be holding a qualifying heat for the SANA Scottish National Stillwater Championship. This is a great opportunity to qualify to potentially fish for your country. It is an open competition and anybody who would be interested in fishing it please call the shop on 01382 350777/350213 for more details.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) There were some excellent catch and release returns last week with Paul Kennedy from Haddington including a perfectly conditioned 18lbs 8oz rainbow in his basket of 10 that was taken mainly on a Black & Silver Buzzer. Tommy Dickson from Dunbar took 8 on the Diawl Bach including specimens of 8lbs and 6lbs, Chris McKenna, Dalkeith 5 on the Cormorant, Jackie Hay, Haddington, 13 on the Cat and Buzzers, Eddie Peden, Tranent, 9 on the Black & Silver Buzzer and David Savage from Edinburgh caught 7 on a Black & Green Buzzer. 5. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) On Sunday morning, fishing in the wind and driving rain, Ron Lusher from Perth caught a lovely silver fish weighing 12lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach. Featuring amongst the best catches was Mitch Maxwell from           Dennyloanhead with a brace weighing 8lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Bill Stanfield,              Bridge of Allan, 4 for 11lbs on a Black Lure, Jimmy Young, Alloa, 2 for 6lbs on a Black & Green Fritz and Brian Wilson from Falkirk had 3 for 7lbs 8oz on a Black Fritz. Veronica Lusher from Perth used a Diawl Bach to take a couple weighing in at 4lbs 4oz, Jim Kelly, Airdrie, 2 for 6lbs on a Minkie, John Robertson, Kinross, 2 for 4lbs 8oz on a Yellow Buzzer and David Hunter from Alloa had 2 for 4lbs on a Bloodworm. Last but not least, Andy Airnes from Clackmannan bagged 4 fish for 8lbs on a Green Bug.

6. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Yet another 3.5 inches of rain and some breezy days made for some unpleasant conditions this week!    With half of the week’s rain falling on Saturday night, the water was coloured on Sunday but was nice and clear the rest of the week.   The continuing relatively mild temperatures mean that the fish are not deep in the water and are being taken between 2 and 6 feet down.   The fish were well spread out although the Far Bay and the Island were often hot spots as they offered areas where the wind was behind anglers for casting.   The usual selection of flies were doing well with the most popular patterns being Diawl Bach, Cruncher, Damsel, Cat’s Whisker and Buzzer. The Fishery is now open from 8am to 5pm every day.

John Lennox, Hamilton, 2 for 8lb including 5lb 10oz Tiger and a Blue, Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 2 for 8lb including 5lb 8oz Rainbow, Steven Mullin and young son, Liam, Pitlochry, shared 3 for 9lb 12oz including 5lb 5oz Tiger for father, Steven, and two from the Meadow Pond for Liam and Jim Sneddon, Falkirk, 2 for 9lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond, including 5lb 8oz Rainbow and 4lb 4oz Tiger. Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 15lb including a Blue, John Mooney, Queenzieburn, 4 for 12lb 8oz including a Blue, plus 3 caught and released, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 4 for 9lb 8oz including 3lb 8oz Tiger and 3 from the Millpond and John Dargie, Kirkmichael, 3 for 10lb 6oz including 3lb 12oz Blue. Peter Scott, Stenhousemuir, 3 Blues for 9lb 8oz, Paul Parnham, Kirkmichael, 3 for 9lb, Kyle Crossan, Stirling, 3 for 9lb, Allan Whitton, Stirling, 3 for 8lb 8oz from the small ponds and John O’Hara, Shotts, 3 for 8lb 4oz. Jim Hughes, Motherwell, 2 for 6lb, Alan Armstrong, Dollar, 2 for 6lb and Sandy Donald, Dunblane, 2 for 6lb.

7. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) Work has now started on excavating two brand new bait ponds which will see the main reservoir being utilised solely for fly fishing. Regular updates on progress will be included in the reports that are due to restart next week.
