Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 10 February 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 03 February 2014.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2014
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The water clarity has begun to improve on all the ponds and it has made the fishing a fair bit easier as long as the wind strength haven’t been to sever. The Bankside has been on good form over the weekend with a lot of fish getting caught all around the pond. The Ferry Fly Dressers fished on Saturday when 7 rods took 17 for 43lb. Mr Prior took 2 fish for 6lb 8oz. Most of the fish were getting caught on black and green lures fished fairly deep on a sunk line but there have been fish caught on buzzers and even wets. The Boathouse has held a wee bit of colour but most rods have taken fish, Mr Jones took 2 fish for 8lb on small Cat’s Whiskers fishing where the water comes in. Mr Shearer took 2 fish for 7lb on a Damsel. The Burnside was proving to be a bit tricky but a couple of anglers seemed to find them on Sunday morning up at the top end of the pond and did really well. Mr Barlow took 7 fish in three hours fishing Buzzers very deep. Mr Simpson took 11 fish on a di 3 and a Black and Green lure and a Blob. He had a couple of blue and a rainbow estimated to weigh around 6lb. The Woodside has seen a few fish getting caught but they seem to be holding very deep, as normal power bait has been the best method but spinners have also taken a few fish as well.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Jack Hay from Haddington caught 5 on a Diawl Bach including a nice brown at 7lbs, Gordon Bunce, Bonnyrigg, 5 on the Claret Buzzer, Jocky Dyatt, Bonnyrigg, 14 on a Bloodworm and Paul Kennedy from Haddington caught 6 on a Hot Head Damsel. Mark Williamson from Tranent took 8 on Buzzers, David Savage, Edinburgh, 6 on a Montana and a Black & Green Damsel and the Scottish Team Fundraiser saw over 300 fish being caught and released with the winner being Shane Kelly from Hawick with 14 fish.
4. MORTON (Livingston) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
5. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Nothing has changed this month, still the same weather conditions with some bright spells but mostly wind and rain so the depth the fish are being caught is still varying with the wind on a wide variety of flies.
Hugh Bratchie from Lochgelly had 6 fish for 16lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer, Bobby Robertson, Falkirk, 3 for 8lbs on a Green Fritz, David McCrae, Falkirk, 3 for 7lbs 8oz on a Blob and Robert Kettles from Perth used a Damsel to take a brace weighing 5lbs.Ken Bell from Perth caught 3 fish weighing 9lbs, Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, 3 for 6lbs on a Black Damsel, Jim Coghlan, Auchterarder, 3 for 8lbs on an Olive Damsel and John Bell from Airth took 3 for 7lbs on an Olive Damsel. Jack Gibb from Clackmannan bagged a brace on a Cat’s Whisker that tipped the scales at 5lbs.
6. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Despite another week of unsettled weather, the fishing continued to be pretty good. The water remained clear all week despite the rain and conditions were mostly dictated by the strength and direction of the wind. In general the fish were around 4 to 6 feet deep although they were seen rising most days. Those anglers who were fishing bigger lures were getting a lot of tail pulling and a shift to smaller lures usually helped. On the windier days buzzers were doing well, with mini lures on an intermediate line the best bet in calm conditions, such as all day Friday. Favourite patterns included the usual Dancer, Damsel, Cormorant, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear and Buzzer, with one angler even having success on a dry fly on the Millpond on Friday. Since the introduction of catch and release on all the ponds, it is working well, and with more fish being taken than released there is still a high turnover of fish all over.
George Kochanek, Tullibody, 6lb 8oz Rainbow, Joe Hunter, Tullibody, in two visits, 9 for 25lb 4oz including 2 Blues, Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 5 for 14lb 4oz, Danny Doherty, Denny, 4 for 12lb 8oz including a Blue and Nigel Muckle, Mid Calder, 4 for 11lb 12oz. Dave Simpson, Forfar, 4 for 11lb 4oz plus 8 caught and returned, Davy Neilson, Carronshore, 4 Blues for 10lb including 2 from the Meadow Pond, John O’Hara, Shotts, 3 for 9lb including a Blue and Henry Fulton, Greenock, 3 for 9lb. Stuart Muckle 3 for 8lb including a Blue, William Williams, Alloa, 3 for 7lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond, including 3lb 12oz Tiger, Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 3 for 7lb 8oz from the Millpond, including 2 Blues and Gary Waugh, Cumbernauld, 2 for 6lb 4oz including a Blue. Willie Walker, Falkirk, 2 Blues for 6lb and John Middleton, Shotts, 2 for 6lb including a Blue.
