The best taking flies are lures included Blobs, the Kate McLaren, Sedge Muddler,
Dabblers, Sedgehogs and the Cormorants whilst all areas of the loch are fishing
well.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The unseasonably cold east wind
has been the biggest disappointment at Kingennie last week reducing the quality of
rises, especially in the evenings. However, there have still been some good catches
recorded. On the more positive side of things the occasional blue trout has been
caught and most are fine fish in the 3 to 4lbs range.
The water clarity in the Boathouse Pool has improved gradually and is now almost
back to normal. Yellow Dancer lures worked well for Daniel's group with the best bag
being 4 fish for a total of 20lbs 14ozs. The overall catch for Saturday was 13 fish for
56lbs.The Burnside has been moody but patience and skill paid off for Ian Barlow
who caught and released 15 rainbows on Buzzers. Several other reasonable returns
were made, mainly on some form of Buzzers. Saturday was again a top day for the
Bankside Pool with 6 fish being taken for 15lbs and a further 32 returned under
the catch and release option. Buzzers, Dries and lures have all proved successful.
During the week Craig Dixon had 16 on catch and release and Davie Simpson
returned 11. Like the Burnside Pool, Woodside the any legal method pool, has been
moody. However, green Powerbait proved its worth on Saturday with most of the 28
fish being taken on it; total weight for the day was 46lbs.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The fishery was fairly quiet last week and the hot bright
conditions made for challenging fishing but despite this there were some great
catch and release catches with Mattie Devine from Hagston taking 14 on Buzzers
– best fish 9lbs, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, had 13 taken mainly on a CDC, Tommy
Dickson from Dunbar had 12 on the CDC and D Douglas from Alnwick also took
12 on Buzzers. Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 5 on various lures and Malcolm
Coulson from Dumfries took 7 on Buzzers. J Angus from Alnwick had 3 for 10lbs on
Buzzers, W Kinnaird, Dalkeith, used Buzzers to take a nice brace weighing 6lbs 8oz
and George Liddle from Dunbar had 3 for 7lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The very hot weather last has fairly warmed up the water
producing an amazing amount of fly life but these conditions have made fishing more
challenging for the anglers who had good sport seeing the fish either taking your fly
or just turning away - very frustrating but great to have summer for a change!
On Sunday the Strathcarron Hospice Charity Day was enjoyed by 34 anglers taking
85 fish for 262lbs on a wide variety of flies including the Damsel, Buzzers, Diawl
Bach, Sedge, Daddies, Flexi Cat, Bloodworm and the Ally McCoist. The day was
won by Johnny Weir with 4 fish for 17lbs 12oz best 10lbs 4oz who picked up the
Paul Mackenzie Memorial trophy, Wilson Orr was second with 4 fish for 15lbs best
7lbs and third place went to Alec Weatherspoon with 4 fish for 12lbs. Also doing well
in the event was Ken Bell with 4 fish for 11lbs 12oz, Davie Black 4 fish 11lbs 4oz and
Allan Mitchell with 4 fish weighing 10lbs 4oz.
Owner, Elizabeth Jackson would like to thank all anglers who contributed
throughout the year into the Charity Box and this raised a tremendous £3,493.32 for
Strathcarron.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The warm, sunny weather this week was a welcome
change for anglers after what seems like months of cold easterly winds and dull,
grey conditions. The mixture of hot days and cool nights meant that the fish
were still about 3 feet below the surface, even when there was some cloud cover,
with occasional sporadic rises and only a few caught on dry flies. As the water
temperature rises, the fish are looking for fresh water and many anglers were drawn
to splashes at the mouth of burn which resulted in a few nice tigers being caught
there along with a nice 7lb+ Blue. The small ponds fished well for most of the
week, and although fish could be seen moving freely just under the surface there
was not a great deal of top of water sport. Favourite patterns this week included a
large selection of nymphs such as PTN, Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach, and Damsel; wets,
including Spider and Kate McLaren; and Buzzers, with the best of the dry flies being
a small White Moth.
Amongst the best bags this week were Allan Whitton, Stirling, 2 for 12lb 8oz
including 7lb 10oz Blue and 4lb 14oz Tiger, Nan Morrison, Stirling, 5 for 16lb 10oz
including 2 Tigers, bigger one at 5lb 4oz, Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 5 Blues for 16lb
8oz, biggest at 7lb 8oz and Mike Chubb, Stirling, 5 for 16lb 8oz including 3 Blues,
biggest at 6lb 12oz from Swanswater followed by 16 released on the small ponds.
Dave McFadyen, Stirling, 4 for 14lb including 6lb 12oz Blue, Dennis Raynor, Stirling,
3 for 10lb 12oz from the Millpond including 6lb 8oz Blue, John Lennox, Hamilton,
2 for 8lb 2oz including 5lb 12oz Blue and Willie Nyguist, Stirling, 5 for 14lb 12oz.
Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 5 for 13lb 8oz including 3 Blues, Billy Weir, Bannockburn, 4
for 10lb from Swanswater, followed by another 8 caught and released on the small
ponds and Steven Mason and son, Jordan, shared 3 for 9lb 8oz with 12 year old
Jordan landing a 4lb Tiger. Chris Thomson, Dollar, 3 Blues for 9lb 4oz, biggest at
3lb 8oz, Gregor Hunter, Inchinnan, 2 for 6lb 4oz including a Blue and Phillip Leo,
Yorkshire, 4lb 4oz Rainbow.
6. WOODBURN FISHERY (Milton of Campsie) The very hot bright conditions
certainly made the fishing challenging last week but despite this there were some
nice baskets and individual fish recorded. On the bait fishing scene Robert Fulton
from Milton of Campsie used maggot to take a brace of rainbows weighing 7lbs, Pat
Harte from Bishopbriggs had 2 rainbows for 7lbs – best 4lbs on worm and returned
later in the week to take 3 rainbows for 9lbs and also retuned a cracking 12lb fish
that saw him rewarded with a free ticket. On the fly Jamie Rooney from Lennoxtown
landed 2 rainbows for 7lbs 8oz – biggest 3lbs 8oz on Buzzers, Ian McLeash from
Lenzie had a brace of browns and three rainbows that weighed in at 13lbs 8oz
through using a Kate McLaren and Buzzers and Billy Crooks from Bishopbriggs had
a fine 3lb rainbow on a Yellow Dancer. Ian McBride from Stepps used a Clan Chief
to catch and return a lovely brown trout estimated to weigh around the 8lb mark and
Paul Morrison from Stepps landed 2 rainbows for 7lbs 8oz on a Diawl Bach.
ENDS.
