Lake of Menteith 16th Aug 2011

6ft Water Temperature – 16C, Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.4m.

July Monthly Summary The 8hr two man boat average catch was 4.9 fish for 12.9lbs. Fish average weight

was 2.6lbs, and % catch and release was 36%. This compares to a catch rate of 5.9 fish for 13.7 lbs in the previous
month – despite a higher stocking rate per angler hour in July. The period of warm water temperature at the end
of July sent the fish deep – where they were hard to find (apart from in Gateside). Last July’s catch and release
was 23% - so catch and release is still increasing – probably due in a large part to the high proportion of catch and
release associated with the Youth International at the end of the month (thanks to all).

Book Review I am indebted to Stan Paterson of St.Mungo AC who is currently lending me the book - Sex, Death
and Fly Fishing by John Grierach (Author of Trout Bum). For those of you who haven’t read it – do! I was
particularly grateful for the Authors help with the catch and release
enigma/paradox - he likens catch and release to sex and birth
control. Nuff said. It was also good to know that I am not the only
one who hopes my felt sole footprints will be gone before my
partner gets back. Roll on the felt sole ban!

Angling Centre Stirling Boat League:

10th
August: Ken Oliver was top rod again this week – this time he was
using a team of diawl bachs (what no booby or blobs) as apposed
to the dries which won him last weeks heat. Ian Stuart (pictured
left) was second (also with 6 fish) – he had 4 on dries (including
the resident?) and two on blobs in the cages. Brian McKenzie is
out in front with one heat to go - and it is close. Douglas has
calculated that if James finishes 9th, Brian 8th and Ken 1st in the
last heat - it will be a dead heat for 1st, 2nd and 3rd - I suppose we
would look at the best 10 results.......but I doubt it will be that
close...........There will be burgers, stew and refreshments supplied
by the fishery for the Wednesday night’s prize giving/Douglas's
Birthday Party. The fifteen anglers caught
48 fish – and all but 6 were returned.
