Lake of Menteith 18th July 2011

Water Temperature – 18C, Clarity (Secchi disc)2.5m.

Water clarity seems to be building again and pinhead fry are in great abundance. The big talking point at the
fishery is the size of the fish which are currently averaging 2.6lbs, with plenty in the 3lb weight category. This
week we will continue stocking with these large fish as well as some of average weight 2lbs. With so many fish of
around 3lbs on the go anglers are strongly advised to fish only 10lb or more breaking strain. Best areas have been
Lochend and more recently the Malling shore and Gateside Bay, around the islands and out in the open are also
worth a throw. A sink tip line with diawl bachs and a booby on the point has been the most successful (or popular)
tactic, this week.

Scottish Club Championships Sponsored by Famous Grouse whisky and the Angling Centre Stirling. On
Saturday night 48 anglers landed 95 fish for 244lbs. Top team were Canmore and Forfar with 13 fish, pictured
below, l to r, Neil Anderson, Fraser Robertson, (Calum Crosbie Alba Orvis) and Ewan Scott. 2nd were Hawick Ac
and 3rd Alba Orvis Fly Fishers. Top bag on the night, where 5 anglers bagged up with the 5 fish limit, was Calum
Crosbie. Also qualifying for the Champion of Champions Comp were Brian Taylor, Craig Osborne, Mike Willis,
Ewan Scott and John Kaye. Ewan Scott had the biggest fish of 4lbs 7oz.

In the Menteith ACS
Boat League on
Wednesday, anglers
again opted to fish to
total catch and release
rules with tied places
being decided on the
time of the first fish
caught. Anglers were
free to fish to the bag
limit for their own
needs. 17 anglers caught
22 fish on a difficult
night. Top rod on the
night was Brian
MacKenzie with 6 fish.
16 year old James
Fairlie currently heads the leader board but with anglers now discounting their lower scores there is all to fish for.

Catches: Bridge of Alllan 76 - 5 ½ boats 32 fish 92lbs plus 16 rtd, Frank Gillespie and Graham Niven of
Edinburgh had 8 fish for 23lbs and returned another 15 in the Saturday early morning shift, Falkirk Fly Dressors 6
boats 42 fish 115lbs, Thack AC 6 boats 46 fish 14 rtd. Rothes Oak 5 boats 18 fish 52lbs, tillicoultry 3 boats 18 fish
plus 7rtd, St.Serf’s Ladies 5 boats 10 fish for 25lbs and Lame Ducks 5 boats 9 fish for 28lbs.

JUNE MONTHLY SUMMARY
Fishing pressure dropped significantly in June, relative to last year, and was down around 9%. 8hr boat average
fish catch went up from 4.8 fish for 9lbs last June to 6 fish for 14lbs this June - thanks to many factors; e.g. water
clarity, water temperature. Increased catch and release (up from 22% last June to 38% this June) may be the most
important factor, particularly in the Anglian Water Heats and the Boat League, contributing to improved catches.
The av. number of fish killed dropped slightly per 8hr boat from 3.77 to 3.7. Mean June fish weight was up from
1lb 14oz to 2lbs 5oz.

Due to continuing demand (it did fish well) we are planning to have an ADDITIONAL EARLY
MORNING shift on Saturday 30th July. Electrics only 4am to 9am.

BOATMEN are URGENTLY required for the YOUTH INTERNATIONAL at the Lake on Wednesday
27th July (next week). Please contact the fishery if you would like to be a part of the day.
