Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 23 January 2017. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 22 January 2017.
1. FRANDY (Glendevon). The fishery is now closed for the 2016 season.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The bitterly cold conditions have made it fairly unpleasant for anglers this week. However, although catches have been on the low side there have still been some decent returns to those who found the right depth and method. The Boathouse Pool probably saw the best returns. Mr. Stevens returned eight, taken on Buzzers/Bloodworm; Jock Leslie returned six, which fell to a variety of patterns and Mr. Sharpe took two rainbows for 6lbs 8oz and returned a further two. The water clarity is improving rapidly and would suit a roving approach this week. On the Burnside Pool the method has varied from pulling lures right through to fishing small Buzzers under a bung. Surface activity has dropped off but there are still plenty of fish to be had in the upper layers on a floating line or midge tip. Mr. Jones returned twelve taken mainly on Buzzers and Mr. Easton returned eight which fell to a Squirmy beneath a bung. Mr. Reynolds took three fish for 7lbs 4oz and returned two. It was generally hard going on the Bankside Pool for most of the week. We were pleased to host the Ferry Fly Dressers on Sunday, who seemed to enjoy themselves despite the rather challenging conditions. Top rod for the week was Mr. Meecham who returned eleven fish including an excellent brown trout estimated at 6lbs+. There was no particular pattern or method which succeeded – more of a mobile approach reaping the best results. The Woodside Pool proved particularly difficult this week with most fish falling to small spinners, such as bladed Mepps. Mr. Elham took four rainbows for a total of 7lbs 12oz and Mr. Keating had two rainbows for 5lbs 8oz.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Ally Graham from Falkirk had 6 on Buzzers, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 4 on a Yellow Dancer, Steven Raeburn, Edinburgh, 4 on a Black Rabbit and George Boag from Edinburgh had 3 on Mini Lures. Jocky Dyatt from Dalkeith had 6 on an Egg Fly, Derek Demarco, Haddington, 5 on a Yellow Dancer, Tom Russell Snr., Earlston 12 on a Yellow Dancer and Steve Rodgers from Edinburgh had 4 on a Damsel.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was another very mixed week again with the fish taking about 2-3 feet down on a wide variety of flies. Hector Wilson from Bannockburn had 3 for 14lbs 8oz – best 6lbs on a Montana, Ronnie Stanovich, Glasgow, 3 for 15lbs – best 9lbs on a Hare’s Ear, Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, 3 fish for 10lbs 8oz – best 4lbs on a Bibio and Mike Wheelans from Blackford took a nice 5lb specimen. Manuel Geraldus from Dunfermline had a rainbow of 4lbs 4oz on a Buzzer, B Bruce, Falkirk, 3 fish for 10lbs 8oz on an Orange Fritz and Hamish Carmichael from Alloa used a Hot Head Damsel to bag a brace weighing in at 7lbs.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) There was some excellent fishing midweek when the rise in air and water temperature saw the fish becoming very active. Floating lines were catching fish, including two cracking specimen on Saturday, one at 9lb 8oz and the other 8lb 10oz, both taking the fly as it hit the water. For most of the week the fish were in the top three feet of the water and were to be found all round the main pond with the island, channel, dam, overflow and roadside being the best areas. Plenty of fish were also caught in the small ponds, with many anglers there choosing to catch and release. Most fish were taking small lures, with Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, and Fritz being the favourite patterns, but nymphs and wet flies were also successful; most popular being Damsel, Hare’s Ear, Buzzer, Kate McLaren and Black Pennell.

Will anglers please note that in order to protect the big fish it has been decided to reduce the 10lb return limit to 6lb enabling the fishery to restock with more big fish.
