ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 07 December 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 06 December 2015.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The fishery closed for the 2015 season on Saturday 31st October and will re-open for the 2016 season (weather permitting) on Tuesday 1st March.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) This past week of very heavy rain has affected the fishing as we were not able to avoid the flood water, the levels on all the ponds are normal but the colour of the water is now dirty in all the ponds. There have still been anglers out when the weather has been settled. The methods have been the same on the ponds, a floating or slow sinking line with lures of various colours have been best.
On the Boathouse the biggest fish of the week fell to Mr Watson with a rainbow estimated at around 9lb as well as another 6 caught on a Damsel. Mr Woods had a good day keeping his 4 for 11lb on an Orange Blob. The Burnside has seen the fish sitting quite high in the water despite the weather. Mr Gowans had 8 on a Damsel, Mr Simpson had 9 on a Black Blob and Mr Jenkins had 2 for 5lb and put back 6 on a black and green lure. The Bankside has seen the fish holing in the first bay and the north bank, Mr Barlow had 8 on a Squirmy Worm, Mr Young had 5 on an Orange Blob. The Woodside has not had many anglers on it but nearly every single person has taken their limit. Powerbait has been the best method fished under a float. Mr Irvine took his 4 fish for 7lb in just half an hour.

3. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It has not been a great week with snow last week end and now heavy rain and wind. The water is fishing just 2 - 3 feet down with a variety of flies. Some returns from last week included Sam Cook from Culross with2 for 9lbs – best a 6lbs blue on a Bloodworm, W Cane, Airdrie, 3 for 12lbs on a Pink Zonker, A Campbell, Airdrie, 2 for 9lbs on a Buzzer, Hector Wilson, Bannockburn, 3 for 10lbs 12oz on a Pink Fritz and Jim Donnelly from Tillicoultry took 3 fish for 9lbs on a Buzzer. Robert Kettles from Perth caught 2 for 8lbs on a Black Fritz, Ian Soutar, Methven, used a Cat to take a brace for 7lbs, Alistair Ford, Milnathort, 2 for 8lbs on a Black Spider, C Peattie, Dunfermline,1 for 7lbs on a Yellow Dancer and Jeff Thomson from Blackford had a brace weighing 8lbs on a Black & Green Fritz.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a very quiet week due to the extreme weather conditions but despite this a couple of big specimens were recorded. Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh included one at 12lbs 40z in a brace caught on a Buzzer and Ian Ritchie from McMerry had 1 for 11lbs on a Black Rabbit. Also doing well was Ken Morrison from Edinburgh who used a Bloodworm and Buzzers to catch 5, Eddie Peden, Pentcaitland had 5 on an Egg Fly and Joe Beattie from Edinburgh had 5 on a Black & Silver Rabbit.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Storm Desmond hit the Fishery on Friday night and Saturday and deposited a huge amount of rain (over 4 inches) which led to a torrent running down the road from the top pond and over the overflow! Fortunately there was no serious damage, apart from some erosion to the road, and things quickly settled down again on Sunday. By this morning (Monday 7th) the lade was running clear and the water level was just about back to normal. For those who braved what was a pretty wet and wild week, the fishing was good with the fish to be found around 2 to 4 feet down and well spread out round the pond. Damsel, Buzzer, Black Fritz, Montana, Dancer and Ally McCoist were the favourite patterns and the fish were looking for a medium to fast retrieve. The small ponds also fished very well and offered a lot more shelter than the more exposed areas of the top pond.
Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, in two visits, 6 for 17lb 8oz plus 3 caught and released, Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, in two visits, 5 for 17lb 6oz plus 3 caught and released, Ian Whitelaw, Denny, 5 for 11lb 4oz from the small ponds, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 12lb including a Blue and Jim Milne, Alloa, 3 for 12lb 12oz including 5lb Rainbow. Martin Watt, Airdrie, 2 for 6lb 4oz from the Millpond including a Blue, Gordon McCallum, Kirkmichael, 5lb Rainbow, John Relf, Falkirk, 4lb 4oz Rainbow and Stephen Murphy, Motherwell, caught and released 6. Jim Dougall, Kincardine, caught and released 6 and Gary Waugh, Cumbernauld, caught and released 6.
